Ubuntu Natty X2go client

All, I know Mike got X2go server running on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty. I haven't been able to do that yet but that's not my particular concern at the moment. I was wondering if anybody has used X2go client (either standard GTK client or Py Hoca) on an Ubuntu Natty desktop machine. I am trying to use Py Hoca client right now on my Natty computer, but when I launch PyHoca I get: administrator@ubuntu-kiosk-7:~$ pyhoca-gui pyhoca-gui[5662] (PyHoca-GUI) WARN: the current release of PyHoca-GUI does not support client configuration The logo pops up in the middle of the screen, but then nothing shows up anywhere. I see the process running, but I can't find any icon indicating it's running. Has anyone tried this successfully? Thanks, Neil

Installation on multiple nodes

Hi, I tried the installation of x2go on Debian Squeeze, with the repository. With one serveur, it works, but I would install it on multiple servers. The documentation explained how to do it, using LDAP (but it was not up to date, packages like x2goldaptools does not exist anymore), the page of the wiki about it is now removed. Hi What I can contribute is that I have been using X2go for more than 6 months now and very successfully. I run the server on Debian Squeeze (and Lenny before) and connect to it from Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 and Debian Squeeze (Laptops). So far I have had some issues, but it is very stable. So stable in fact that I am often working remotely on my server at home (connect over the internet via SSH). Resuming works almost always and I have to say, I am surprised how well it works. I would like to extend my congratulations and thanks for this nice piece of software to you developers! I have used Nxserver and NXfree (or freenx, I always confuse them) and that used to work much worse, with suspending and resuming spotty at best. (I have to admit that this does not comment the commercial version of NXserver, which must be much better I am sure) It is unfortunate that you have having so much trouble getting it to work, I can relate to this, as your question indicates, like "is this working ANYWHERE?" and yes it does, very well. So I am sure there must be some way that you can get it to work. But when it comes to open source, yes, the documentation can be lacking and sometimes it takes a long time and strains the patience. What I can say is that it is worth the work, since the software works very nice and I am glad that finally I can use my server at home as the unlimited (no more 2 or 3 user limit) terminal server that I have always wanted. Even audio forwarding works (on Windows, so I can hear the pulseaudio on my server session, EVEN THOUGH I have Jackd audio deamon running on it. How this can work is beyond me, a positive surprise to be sure. And filesharing works also. I also understand and write German, but I understand that this mailing list should be kept in English, so I hope you can understand me. I know that my configuration is kinda simplified, as I am not using LDAP or any kind of complex user authentication mechanism. It might be easier to get it working simple, before trying to tacke these. The repository that I am using currently are these, just in case this helps: deb http://x2go.obviously-nice.de/deb/ lenny main (I actually went to my open terminal session window and copy pasted it (even this works)) As you see, I am still using the lenny repository (in case there is a newer one) and use the server and here are the packages that I have currently installed: pinentry-x2go install pinentry-x2go-gtk install x2goagent install x2gocdmanager install x2goclient install x2goclient-cli install x2goclient-gtk install x2gokdebindings install x2goserver install x2goserver-home install x2goserver-one install x2gospyglass install x2gousbmount install Just in case this helps... as you can see I am using the x2goserver-home or one version which is simplified without all the bells of whistles of authentication, if I understand it correctly. I remember one issue that I had was about Xming not running in Windows (which is the component that acts as Xserver). In my case it was not started automatically. Another thing is my /etc/sudoers config ### X2GO section %x2gousers ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/x2gopgwrapper #### X2GOPRINT section x2goprint ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/x2goprint And I remember having an issue with that. These settings might be too insecure for your taste, but it is easiest to first open things up and circle the problem wide, to see where it is located at. Hope this helps.. Markus

John I've done this quite a bit and have not seen this problem x2go client on ubuntu --(a)--- AWS EC2 Ubuntu desktop ---(b)--- AWS EC2 Windows 2003 serverl - link (a) is 15 Mbs cable connection - link (b) is 10Gbps ethernet A few thoughts I'd have are: - is only RDP affected? - From x2go client can you log into the x2go server and do an extended PING (say 20 iterations or so) to the Windows Server to see if PING's response time is changing? - are you sure there are no network issues on the link btwn the x2go server to the windows server? as it sounds like the VPN test went directly to the Windows server leaving out the link between the x2go server and Windows Server - Are you able to log directly into the x2go server ...not using x2go ... and run rdesktop directly to the window server just to see if RDP is having a problem over that link? Hello, all. We were very eager to experiment with TSPlus (http://www.tsplus.net) as an alternative to Microsoft RDS. We have been assuming all along that performance of any RDP solution is better in a low bandwidth WAN environment if we put X2Go in the middle of it and run rdesktop from the X2Go Server to a local Windows server. Our results were very disappointing with both TSPlus and RDS and with both rdesktop and xfreerdp. Has anyone else experienced the same poor performance or, more importantly, has anyone worked around it? We noticed that screens seemed to be painting line by line - not sure if if it is the entire screen or just the active window. It also made mouse movements very erratic in TSPlus + rdesktop. TSPlus + xfreerdp seems better. To demonstrate this, I opened notepad in a large window in a full screen session, typed an entire line, copied it to the clipboard and then held down <CTL>V to paste it. The first few lines flew but then it became very slow and we could see the flicker of each line painting. I also opened Internet Explorer and went to www.spiritualoutreach.org - a very poorly designed site I put up years ago with long pages and far too large graphics. I sat and watched the screen paint a band at a time. I opened one of the large template documents and vertical scrolling was nearly impossible. I'll paste in some of our internal notes below. Thanks - John BEGIN NOTES Good afternoon, Phil. I've dropped an unexpected several hours into this this morning with some good, some bad news, and some inconclusive news. There is an alternative to rdesktop named freerdp which aims to implement the newer protocols as rdesktop is barely being developed. Last I used it, it was very lacking but I installed the current Squeeze version on my netbook and connected to windesk01 across the VPN (xfreerdp -d mydomain -u myid -a 32 -x lan -f --plugin cliprdr tsplusserver ). The results were stunning. Performance was quite usable directly through the VPN, i.e, not using X2Go as an intermediary. The silly test I was using to see the line by line painting (opening a large notepad, typing a full line, copying it to the clipboard, and then holding down <CTL>V to continually paste it) worked quite well. I did the same thing to RDSServer where I had some large architectural drawing stashed and they scrolled largely seamlessly. I then returned to my VD, installed freerdp-x11, and tried the same. The results were most disappointing - the same problems of slow, line by line painting. I also noticed that the full screen toggle (<ALT><CTL><ENTER>) mangled whereas directly on the VPN, it did not. I wonder of there is some sort of conflict between the way NX and RDP paint the screen? I then tried the same thing using simply rdesktop. The performance over the VPN was better than I remembered. I also contrasted RDSServer and tsplusserver. I'm not sure but it is possible that TSPlus is actually getting heat for something they are doing well. The line by line screen painting in my notepad test was much more noticeable in TSPlus but the overall performance was about the same. I wonder if TSPlus is painting the screen faster and so we see the repaints whereas RDS is hiding them by not updating the screen as quickly. I don't know - just a thought. I'm continuing to play around with this quite a bit. In fact the above paragraph was typed from a direct full screen Windows desktop via X2Go. This paragraph is being typed across the VPN directly on tsplusserver using xfreerdp. The keyboard response seems about the same. For kicks, I opened KWrite on my Trinity desktop and tried the same pasting test to see if the screen painting was line by line. It was not; it flew. So it is something in the interaction between RDP and NX. To create the X2Go direct Windows session, create new sessions (one for tsplusserver and the other for RDSServer). The type should be Custom Desktop (NOT single application) with the command line as described above). Remember to set the compression type to 16m-png-jpeg and the display DPI. I'll be very curious to see what you see. END NOTES

Stefan, I tried long and hard to get the xorg.conf file to work with my monitors to no avail. Debian simply did not have the intelligence to detect various monitor configurations and I finally had to unfortunately give up. Probably not the answer you want, however I can say that we went a different route and it's worked just fine: we decided to create a custom Ubuntu Live CD image and boot to that via PXE. Ubuntu picks up virtually any monitor settings and audio works great as well over PXE. I created a custom kiosk mode so a user boots up right to a full-screen x2go client, just as the x2go-thinclient package did. Since I got very good experiences with the live-helper tools from debian (http://live.debian.net/) this would be a possibility to create the live-cd-image even easier and more reproducable. Bevor I've seen the x2gothinclient-environment I was already thinking to make a pxe-bootable live-image with x2go-fullscreen-client this way. It's also available for ubuntu - but I've never tried. It shouldn't be more difficult than with pure debian (http://packages.ubuntu.com/de/hardy/live-helper) But if possible I would prefer a generic debian solution. So far I see x possibilities 1. hacking the x2gothinclientd script 2. building live-cd image (ubuntu) 3. setting up a special thinclient changeroot for each client which needs special configuration (with hard-links for all unchanged files) and booting with mac-specific pxe Since I've got already the custom xorg.conf for the clients which behave not like they should, I'll start with 1. Hi all, I installed recently x2go-one and the thinclient-netboot-environment. So far all works fine. (Sound and printing not yet tested). At the same network we have also a ltsp installation but I think to replace ist step by step with x2go mainly because of spee issues. One of the main questions I have ist if it's possible to offer custom xorg.conf to the clients which boot via pxe. Some of our monitors are not correctly recognized by the x-server an need a special xorg.conf. In the ltsp changeroot there is the possibility to offer something like xorg.conf.00:00:00:00:00 with mac-address as a suffix. Is there any similar possibility on the x2go thinclient system? If not yet: It should be possible to make some adjustments in the startscript. I would try to make a hack in the /usr/sbin/x2gothinclientd to ask for mac-address to choose a custom Xorg.conf. But maybe there is already a solution? I think it would make sense to change the x2gothinclientd script in this way. Best regards Stefan
