I've tried most of the remote desktop solutions out there. NoMachine's NX, NX/FreeNX, Citrix ICA, etc. They *all* suffer from less than perfect video over the net. Its a combination of bandwidth and cpu horsepower either of which can induce delay/jitter. Audio won't be as noticable as video because if you miss some bits of audio your ears/mind usually still can understand but miss some bits of video and its always noticable. There are quite a few solutions that are starting to appear though that will help. Red Hat has released to opensource the SPICE<http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Red-Hat-open-sources-Qumranet-SPICE-…>software they got from QumranNet two years ago. There is also work being done with Neatx although its got key features that don't work yet (audio/printing for a couple). and there are a variety of other solutions starting to hit the market. Then there is the movement to HTML 5 with embedded video support which is going to change a lot of things for the better. If the video you need to view is web based then don't have the user launch a browser on the remote desktop machine but launch it locally. x2gothinclient: pre-select session?

Hi, today I successfully replaced LTSP by X2Go on a Debian Edu Terminalserver. On the server I just installed x2goserver-one. In the Thin-Client chroot I modified /etc/init.d/ramdrive to create a sessions file that offers a session for the Terminalserver. It works like a charm: the user clicks on the card, enters his username and password, and there he goes :) Now, to top it all off, it would be great if I could get x2goclient to pre-select that session. In my setup there is only one Terminalserver, and that way the click on the card would be saved. Currently, I have the following in /opt/x2gothinclient/etc/default/x2goclient: x2goclient --external-login=/ramdrive/logins --no-menu --maximize --link=lan --kbd-layout=de --kbd-type=pc105/de --set-kbd=1 --geometry=fullscreen --add-to-known-hosts --read-exports-from=/ramdrive/export If I just add --session-id=20100603181957574 to that list, x2goclient won't start. that argument alone doesn't work either. Serious Issue - x2goagent runaway CPU

Hello, all. We are seeing this with enough regularity that it is alarming. Our first client uses Konqueror heavily in their work process. They usually open files from it rather than from within the applications, they email directly from it, etc. The environment is Lenny + Backports with a few updates from Squeeze. We are using KDE 3.5. X2Go is 3.0.1-4 on the client (all windows stations) and 3.0.1-5 for server. We have not been able to track down the trigger but the user's Konqueror will freeze partly painted. x2goagent consumes all the CPU and Konqueror's memory usage grows to frightening amounts (e.g., 18GB). How can we track down and kill this serious bug? Thanks - John

Compensating for heavy packet loss environments

We have some clients who are experiencing heavy packet loss on their Internet connection. As a result, their X2Go sessions regularly hang and then take forever to time-out. Their other Internet traffic is much more resilient. This sounds like an SSH problem which does have a problem with lossy environments. We've started testing with changing the sshd_config to have: ClientAliveCountMax 12 ClientAliveInterval 5 Any other suggestions or experiences in using X2Go in high packet loss environments? update on the status of the new release

Hello x2go user, we've finally found the bug preventing the release of the new version. Now there will be some changes to the feature list of the upcomming release: To keep it realistic there will be no audio support for the desktop/session sharing feature (for now). It won't be possible to modify a shared session which is not yours (due to security reasons). There where also some requests regarding the needed KDE4 bindings. As KDE has changed a lot, we are discussing to build those as a "plasmoid". We'll make the new release accessible for testing purpuse soon - but the plasmoid will take us some time. best regards, Heinz

Windows X2Go printing

Hello, all. We are trying to finish off the punch list for our first major X2Go deployment so I expect to be sending lots of smaller issues to the list. One not so small issue is a problem with using the X2Go client printing on Windows stations. The portability of this solution is magnificent but we are noticing that the windows client cannot directly print to the local printers. Whenever we send a print job from the X2Go server to the Windows X2Go client (3.0.1-4), the print dialog properly displays. However, no matter which local printer we choose, whichever application Windows has associated with PDF files opens instead and displays the PDF rather than printing it. Has anyone else seen this behavior? It is 100% reproducible for us. Why is this happening? Is there a workaround? We're about to dive into the code to see what we can find but really don't know what we are looking at or for so any guidance would be greatly appreciated - John

Public key authentication on Mac OS X

Hi all, whilst using x2goclient on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, I came across a few problems. Initially, I thought I could just set up x2goclient to connect to my server which supports public key authentication. Actually, pubkey is my default authentication scheme when connecting to this very server and ssh always chooses it. Furthermore, the password for this very private key is saved in Mac OS X' keychain, providing a ssh-agent like (well, let's say identical) environment. First off, I guess you're only using the stock SSH client found on the machine yourself, so why don't you let it handle it the authentication and (optionally) query for a password, if this situation comes up? Secondly, if you dislike this, keychain integration is still very favorable on Mac OS X, as it saves the user the burden to provide a password for his private key. While this is not exactly very secure, it's very comfortable on the other hand. (Note: keychain can save the provided password and "enter" it automatically everytime the privkey is requested, but it's not necessary to do so. This said, users can of course choose whether the password is to be remembered or not.) I've seen that there is a way to select a private key for authentication in x2goclient. That's handy and I like it, really. As said before, ssh (and ssh-agent/keychain) could handle this as well, but it's nice to have such an option, i.e. when using a very specific key for this purpose only. Any disagreeing or agreeing thoughts on this? Best regards, Mihai

Opening a session to user with encrypted home directory

Hello, there appears to be a problem with connecting to x2goserver-home (Ubuntu 9.10), when the user has encrypted home directory (using ecryptfs). The cause seems to be that some files need to be open in the home directory before the ecryptfs is mounted. Trying to connect again usually works. Also, the unsuccessful first session remains hanging as "running" in the server's database. I checked that after the first unsuccessful trial, the ecryptfs home directory was not mounted. Could it be caused by not enough time for ecryptfs mounting scripts to mount home directory before x2go wants to write to it?
