Unplanned Maintenance on the X2Go-WinBuilder VM

TL;DR: X2Go Client for Windows builds will be down temporarily. Hopefully the VM will not be upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 (probably very disruptive) or have future issues with Windows Updates. I tried to get dismiss the "Get Windows 10" prompt, but accidentally started the upgrade. I am taking steps to both disable the upgrade (so far, so good) and clean up disk space on C:\ This involves moving the old Cygwin installs from C:\ to D:\., including the install where sshd runs from.

Free Off-Site Backup/Mirror for X2Go

Hi everyone, as you may (especially if you attended our X2Go - The Gathering 2015 event) or may not know, there is a Swiss company that would be happy to offer free Backup/Mirror space for X2Go in exchange for mentioning them on our sponsors page. The company in question is ZIIL (see CC: and www.ziil.ch) What's especially cool about them is that their data center is located in a former Swiss army bunker (see http://www.ziil.ch/images/zeitungsartikel_kreuzlinger_zeitung_ziilrz_11_04_… for some pictures). Before asking them to provide a server (or multiple servers) to us, I would like everyone that maintains some kind of service for the project (git hosting, web hosting, build servers, whatever) to report back their current requirements regarding disk space for backups, plus also CPU/RAM requirements in case we could set up a secondary site for failover/loadbalancing there. If you can provide an estimate on expected future use, even better. Note that for various legal reasons, the German site (currently hosted at Hetzner) is here to stay. Moving the whole project into neutral Switzerland might sound like a good idea at first, with the lovely strict information privacy laws that Switzerland has, but it opens another can of worms regarding copyright and trademarks (and defending them when neccessary), as we'd need a lawyer that has experience with Swiss and international law for that, and those aren't cheap. So, for the sake of simplicity (and also because there's some truth in "never change a running system" - the sites hosted at Hetzner have been there for years), we remain based in Germany, but if things work out as planned, we will use the Swiss site as a backup and possibly even as a load balancing and disaster recovery site. Please report back to the list so we have a public overview of our services (I might assemble the info and put it on a separate wiki page later on). X2Go: The Gathering - The Aftermath

Hi everyone, I would like to thank every participant of X2Go: The Gathering 2015 for coming, and for doing their part in making it a wonderful experience. It seems that the 40 minutes of talk/20 minutes break schedule worked rather well, we only had two talks that were delayed - one for technical reasons, the other because two participants needed to leave early. So I suggest we stick with that for the next gathering. However, I am thinking we might want to offer shorter talk slots as well. Maybe 20 minutes of talk/10 minutes break? We only had two of those this time. What worries me is that with all those 40 minute talks, we took a lot of time away from the coding/bugsquashing part, as well as from the socializing. So maybe more 20 minute talks next time, without increasing the number of talks? Also, I am unsure if we should have talks on Sunday at all, or if we should pack all the talks into the Saturday slots, leaving Sunday entirely for coding/bugsquashing/socializing (maybe sitting outside in the park, chatting, after a long breakfast)? At 2014's Gathering, people seemed to really like and enjoy Unperfekthaus, our Saturday dinner location. This year, it seems people weren't too interested and mainly went there for dinner. So I'm wondering - should we drop the Unperfekthaus from next year's schedule, and stay at the hotel for the entire time? As the other community proved, bad weather is no reason not to have a BBQ. ;-) Staying at the hotel would again leave more time for coding/debugging/socializing, as we don't spend 40-60 minutes on the road going to UpH and back, and everyone has access to their personal equipment (laptops, tablets, ...) all the time. Japsand Maintenance Aftermath a.k.a. "Lessons Learned"

Hi Due to a hanging rm process, we had to restart the server today. After rebooting the machine, it was decided to also update the system to the latest packages version, but still staying on Debian Wheezy (for now.) The server is using a custom kernel module provided by Realtek for its RTL8168 ethernet NIC. An in-kernel driver is available, but proved to be too unreliable, leading to frequent network outages and even machine crashes whenever the network IO load was higher than a few hundred KB/s. The hosting provider has a wiki entry for this issue at this location: http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Installation_des_r8168-Treibers/en Unfortunately, the current driver version as provided by Realtek, 8.040, seems to be incompatible with the old 3.2.0-4-amd64 (3.2.68-1+deb7u2) kernel provided by Debian. As of writing this, I do not know what happened exactly, but most likely the module caused a kernel panic during bootup. Reverting to an older version, 8.037, fixed this issue and let the server boot up correctly again. For future maintenance work, please use this older version, at least on Debian Wheezy. I put the module source code into /usr/src and created a symlink from /usr/src/r8168-current to /usr/src/r8168-8.037.00. --- Other updated packages include Java (version 7 co-installed, the "alternatives" symlink now point to version 7 instead of 6) and Jenkins, including its plugins. reprepro refused nightly builds for Debian

Hi Mihai, I just checked the availability of the latest nx-libs packages for Debian and realized that they did not make it into the archive. Last uploaded packages dated back 06/20/2015.
