Well, having vim on the hdd is not really hurting, it is ~1MB in size.
nvi from EPEL does not conflict with vim-minimal:
$ rpm -qlp ./x86_64/Packages/n/nvi-1.81.6-2.el6.x86_64.rpm
/usr/bin/nex
/usr/bin/nvi
/usr/bin/nvi.recover
/usr/bin/nview
...
$ rpm -ql vim-minimal
/bin/ex
/bin/rvi
/bin/rview
/bin/vi
/bin/view
/etc/virc
So where's the problem? Just install vim and ignore it (I don't like it myself).
