Could there be another package or service installed on the non-working machine vs working that is causing this conflict?

And just to confirm permissions on the .Xauthority file:
ls -l .X*
-rw------- 1 localguy localguy 1575 Nov  5 15:00 .Xauthority

Failing:
echo "${HOSTNAME}"
sobolev.dsm.fordham.edu
# hostname -s
sobolev
# hostname -f
sobolev.dsm.fordham.edu <http://sobolev.dsm.fordham.edu/>

working:
echo "${HOSTNAME}"
erdos.dsm.fordham.edu
$ hostname -s
erdos
$ hostname -f
erdos.dsm.fordham.edu
