Shawn,
X2Go-the-Software is a software that was originally coded in Germany (with parts relying on other freely available code, including, but not limited to, the GPL'ed parts of what the Italian-based company NoMachine offered for their NX product, or the free X server for Windows, VcXsrv) and whose web and download servers are hosted in Germany. Some build servers are located in Switzerland and the US.
Also, the NX-related development is now happening in cooperation with the Arctica Project, which uses Github and whatever other infrastructure I am not aware of.
X2Go-the-Project is simply a loose group of volunteers that started in Germany, but these days has members from various countries, and I'm currently the master-of-ceremonies, so to speak (it's hard to claim being "in charge" due to the nature of Open Source - if too many people are unhappy with my decisions, they can simply fork off the project).
There is not one, single company that holds copyright or anything like that. There are several companies providing commercial support for it, though. Note that several of them - like DAS-NETZWERKTEAM and mine, BAUR-ITCS - don't do business with military (let's call it a "conflict of conscience"), but some do, Phoca-GmbH e.g., as far as I know.
Kind Regards,
Stefan Baur, X2Go Project/Community Manager
