I think the easier way to move to a current X base is to to that very
same setup change the X11 people did in the 6.9 -> 7.0 transition.
After that pulling in 7.1 to 7.7 in order should be (relatively) easy.
And when 7.7 is reached the real code changes can be introduced step
by step.
Changing the order might lead to a more stable and more secure nx but
make transition complicated.
Maybe the middle way is the best: remove unused stuff, then do the 7.0
transition, then go up to 7.7, and then add new features.
