I have not touched this yet, because I had no patience to look at the  
exact code of the version handshake.

I guess, bumping the VERSION in nxcomp makes indeed sense for error  
tracking. Please open a bug against libxcomp3 on X2Go BTS. I will look  
at the patch (I hope you provide one) when I have returned from VAC.
