Hello everyone.

Thanks for the report.
You won't be able to upgrade X2Go packages just yet. The new version of X2Go Server depends upon KDrive components that are currently unreleased, so you'll have X2Go Server subpackages that won't be upgradeable. I have to throw out a barrage of other releases to bring this into an consistent state, but that will probably not be finished until the end of this week or next week (just because it's a lot of work and requires a lot of testing and building).
Mihai
Thanks, Mihai.
Now we lost connection to that server, as per x2go client's message:
"Connection failed. bash: x2golistsessions: command not found"
Server side this is what we get:

Is there anything we might do, to bring x2goserver back to normal/operative state?
Thanks in advance, and best regards, e.-

I resolved this issue (Debian testing aka Bookworm) by using the Saimaa version:
$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/x2go.list deb http://packages.x2go.org/debian bookworm extras saimaa
Maybe this will also do the job for Ubuntu.

Lacking an affected system to try, I don't know if it will help. Also, there may be consequences, like if you want to switch back to the stable repo some time later might require removing or even purging all x2go- and nx-related packages.
That said, the PPA for saimaa can be added like so:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/saimaa sudo apt update
Note that you might also have to remove the x2go-stable repo before the switch to saimaa becomes active - as I said, I do not have an affected system so I cannot test it myself.
The commands to do that are: sudo apt-add-repository -r ppa:x2go/stable # note the "-r" sudo apt update.

The output of the grep, cat, zcat commands given in my earlier message would have been really helpful to debug how you got into this mess. Of course, you should have ran them before trying to switch to saima ...
Also, your "apt update" run is showing an error:
Err:13 http://ppa.launchpad.net/x2go/saimaa/ubuntu focal Release 404 Not Found [IP: 2620:2d:4000:1::3e 80]
Looks like we never built saimaa packages for focal (20.04). 18.04 (bionic) is the last Ubuntu release we built them for.
I have a Ubuntu 20.04 image that I can toy around with and reset to a known good snapshot. I could try installing X2Go saimaa's bionic packages into that and see what it does. But as I don't know how you managed to mess up your system, attempting to do that on yours has a good chance of making things even worse.
I would really need to see the apt commands you ran that led to this situation. Please provide the relevant excerpts of the history file(s).
Kind Regards, Stefan Baur

Dear Stefan,
there was a previous message of mine, which has been hold for moderation (I attached files - so the overall message's size trespassed list's limits).
Let me past here, without attachment (there were in-line also).
Dear Stefan, first of all thanks for having suggested some path to follow.

So we're actually using X2Go stock from the Ubuntu repositories.
No, you're not. These lines show that you are/were using the X2Go stable PPA from launchpad, rather than stock Ubuntu X2Go.
X2Go is included in stock Ubuntu since 18.04, I think.
However, the PPAs provide newer package versions than what is available via the standard Ubuntu Repo. There are PPAs for x2go-stable, x2go-saima, and also the nightly builds. (Word of warning here: Once you switch to nightly builds, the way back to stable will be very painful. So don't try that on any production machine.)
And that's what got me thinking. One thing that should be easy to try and should not cause any further harm is to remove *all* X2Go PPAs from your system.
So not only do
sudo apt-add-repository -r ppa:x2go/stable
but also
sudo apt-add-repository -r ppa:x2go/saimaa
and then run "sudo apt update" again.
Do not blindly install what's offered after that, please.
Use "sudo apt upgrade -s" to see what would be installed/updated/changed, and post the output here.

Sounds about right. Also, run
dpkg -l | egrep 'x2go|nx'
This should show packages belonging to x2go and nx that are still on the system and might need to be removed before you can try another install. Note that not all of those containing the substring "nx" will neccessarily belong to the nx-libs we are looking for, e.g. on one of my systems, "libjs-sphinxdoc" and "lynx" matche the query, but obviously have nothing to do with the x2go-related nx packages.
What you're looking for, in addition to any package name starting with "x2go", are package names starting with "nx" and "libnx" (but do check them manually for false positives, line by line).

Now it's complaining about libxcompshad3. But I see the end of the tunnel, thanks to you, Stefan.
Alright, please add libxcompshad3 to the list of packages and see if it keeps complaining further. As long as you keep the "-s" in there, nothing is going to happen, so if another package name shows up, add it and repeat the command. Once it no longer complains, post the output again and we'll see if it looks safe to run.
Again: your effort is really remarkable.
Well ... you are aware that we do offer X2Go support contracts, right? ;) Just something you might want to consider in the future.

Well ... you are aware that we do offer X2Go support contracts, right? ;) I knew that but I completely ignored that you were X2Go official maintainer. Now I see (https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:professional-support) that you are THAT Stefan Baur, meaning the X2Go Project/Community Manager, and I'm honored to have you at my side. Of course I would contribute with a donation <https://x2go.ionic.de/donations.html>, soon after having resolved - thanks to your precious help - this problem. I think we're good.
Do NOT run the 'sudo apt autoremove' that is suggested in the output, though.
But I think it's time to remove the "-s" flag and give it a go.
Note that when you run
sudo apt install x2goserver x2goserver-xsession
afterwards, you will likely be back to slightly older package versions than what you were last using before the broken upgrade attempt.
So some errors that you might have seen come and go in the past may be back.
Also, as I said before, this is just the minimal X2GoServer setup. You may need to install more packages like a binding for your desktop environment, or printing, ...

For donations, I would actually suggest using our new betterplace.org donation page: <https://www.betterplace.org/en/projects/111056?wirwunder=235> - we have some open needs listed there and any donation would go towards those. Which means it's not going into my personal pocket, but still gives me a pleasant and warm fuzzy feeling. ;)
And for support contract options, just shoot me a quick off-list E-Mail where you tell me a bit more about your setup, and we can discuss what type of contract suits you best.

This story has an happy ending: I have obtained back the control of my server (well, actually a KDE destkop install), and this is wonderful.
So, as promised, I'm gonna donate via https://www.betterplace.org/en/donate/ww-sparkasse-ulm/projects/111056, inviting everyone else reading to follow me, because you guys deserve that.
All the best, and - one more time - thanks!
PS Anyway Discover lists me tons of packets available for updates. There is not/any x2go packet listed anymore, as it happened two days ago. Would it be safe proceeding with that (huge) updates session?

Well, if they're not x2go-related packages, I can't tell you for sure, especially since you didn't list their names (sorry, my magic crystal ball is currently undergoing repairs ;-)).
What I would recommend is to run the following commands as root, or prefixed with sudo:
apt update # just for good measure - should be current now ;-) apt upgrade -d -y # see explanation #1 below apt upgrade # see explanation #2 below
#1 - as explained in the other thread, this will download all packages apt believes to be safe to install. It doesn't install them yet, so it is similar to using "-s", but with the added benefit that running the actual command later on will be quicker, as the packages are already there.
#2 - this is the actual upgrade step. Review all packages carefully before confirming it. However, as this is "only" an "apt upgrade", not an "apt full-upgrade", you should be safe. Especially as long as you don't re-enable any X2Go PPAs for now.
Avoid running "apt full-upgrade" or "apt-get dist-upgrade" and the like for now. Those are more likely to cause trouble, as they will trigger package removals and similar stuff that you should only be doing if you know what you're doing. Again, as I wrote in the other thread, "apt full-upgrade" is basically "Yes, do as I say!"'s little brother.
Kind Regards, Stefan Baur (who is now signing off and heading to the dinner table ...)

I resolved this issue (Debian testing aka Bookworm) by using the Saimaa version:
$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/x2go.list debhttp://packages.x2go.org/debian bookworm extras saimaa
I forgot to mention that I uninstalled x2go before adding the saimaa repository.

Hi Enrico,
I just tried to reproduce your issue.
What Mihai (ionic) pointed out to me is that you had a mix of X2Go packages from Ubuntu itself and from the X2Go stable PPA.
So I tried adding the stable PPA to an Ubuntu 20.04 machine that has been running X2Go stock from the Ubuntu repositories.
I was able to add the PPA, I was able to run apt update, but when I tried
apt install -d x2goserver x2goserver-xsession
it started throwing errors already. But it did not break the existing installation.
Trying
apt full-upgrade -d
I got a clear warning that several packages with x2go in their name would be uninstalled if I decided to continue.
Sooo ... I'm really wondering how you could get your system into that state?
Things that might be helpful in debugging the issue: The output of
grep -r x2go /etc/apt/sources.list*
(as this will show all x2go-related repositories you are using)
as well as
cat /var/log/apt/history.log
and, if your log rotation has already moved 2023-05-31's entries into the gzipped archive logs,
zcat $(ls -1 -r /var/log/apt/history.log.?.gz)
The "Commandline" entries should show exactly which apt commands you ran that got you into this mess.
Kind Regards, Stefan Baur

Dear Stefan, first of all thanks for having suggested some path to follow.
