I have been trying--without success--to get x2go running, Linux server and Linux client.
I tried on my local machines here both Slackware. I have 4.0.1.5 server-side, and the client is 4.0.5.0.
and then thought, well maybe I'll be better off with a packaged system, so I spun up a Debian system in the cloud, and used apt-get to install everything. There the server is version 4.0.1.19.
I am trying to run the client on a remote machine.
Does an X server already have to be running on the physical machine to use x2go? Do I want to be running in Desktop, Rootless, or Shadow mode, and how does one even select such a thing?
I am really motivated, but the complexity of the system combined with the limited documentation (e.g. I see there are two x2gostartagent processes running, caused by my ssh connection to the server machine. What should happen next?) may mean that my hopes of using x2go may be dashed.
How much does "professional help" run? All the sites linked to the main page are in German. . .
Thanks, and sorry this is so long.

That depends on which "physical machine" you are talking about - client or server.
On the server (remote end), you do not need a running X Server. If it has a running X server, you can use X2Go to take over the :0 display, for remote support.
On the client (local end), you need some sort of X server. For Linux, it will be the one you're already running for your regular GUI session. For Mac OS X, you will use Xquartz. For Windows, X2GoClient ships with a free X-Server for Windows, but you may substitute your own.
Desktop/rootless/shadow depends on what you intend to use X2Go for. These settings are configured on the client, and can be set/changed individually for every connection you decide to set up (they're saved as "tiles" you can click on to start a connection).

You did take a look at our getting started/first steps section in the Wiki, right? http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:usage:x2goclient#getting_started_my_fi rst_session_profile

Assuming local client that wants a desktop on a remote server, which of the above would that be? BTW I don't get a chance to click on the tiles. As the session starts, it asks for a passphrase (I put in my private rsa key) and then it briefly shows a window which I believe may be where those tiles are located. But it disappears almost immediately and brings up another window with the session details, which tells me I'm in a "Desktop" session.
Does the list accept screenshot images?

I did, and have double-checked it multiple times.
Thanks.

If you're already at the stage where the session starts, then you're past the "tile" stage. The tiles are the white thingies with rounded edges on the right of the X2GoClient window. You click one, then either the login window appears asking you to enter a password, or, assuming you provided sufficient authentication data, the session starts immediately.
To change the settings of an existing tile, click the downward-pointing triangle in the lower right corner of the tile.
As to why you are being told that you are in a desktop session, but aren't seeing a remote desktop - it would be helpful to know which desktop environment you picked when setting up the session.
Note that a) not all desktop environments are compatible with X2Go in all their versions - see http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:de-compat for details, and b) the particular desktop environment needs to be installed on the remote server for it to work - the X2Go packages have no dependency against all available desktop environments.

It does, but if it exceeds the maximum message size, it will end up in the deferred queue, where I or another list admin will have to approve it manually.

Xfce, and it is installed on the server--in fact, I'm current using it quite happily with NoMachine, and TigerVNC. But I would like to have x2go as an alternative to NoMachine, which, as I'm sure you know, isn't open source anymore.
I still wonder whether I want a Desktop, Rootless or Shadow session, and where and how that aspect is controlled.
Thanks for your help and patience.

If you want a full desktop or "picture in picture" desktop, then you will want to click the downward-pointing triangle in the lower right corner of the session tile, then select Session Preferences.
Tab "Session", section "Session Type": XFCE Tab "Input/Output", section "Display": "Fullscreen" for a fullscreen remote desktop, or "Custom", followed by width and height, for a "picture in picture" view.
Rootless sessions are triggered by using single application or published application mode, where you don't use a desktop environment at all, and only see single remote applications on your local display.
Shadow sessions are used for taking over a :0 display of the remote host, or for providing user support on an already established X2Go connection. That's the "connect to local desktop" mode.
