The client and server would run on the same system.
Background: I am looking for a solution to scale Xfig for use on HiDPI screens. What works is VNC: various VNC clients support scaling. However, an NX based solution would possibly be more light weight, and one could manage individual windows.

Only as a "hack", maybe. Lowering the DPI value should approximately give you what you want, but I have never tested this.

That's like adjusting DPI in X. Only some applications listen to it, and normally it only affects font size. What I need is dumb pixel doubling. This is also important for working with low-res desktops on HiDPI screens, so I am optimistic that X2GO will support it one day. NoMachine may support it already.

You could launch a session (local X11 or X2Go) and launch a second
session via X2Go desktop sharing ("Connect to local desktop" as
session type in X2Go Client).
In shadow mode (desktop sharing), NX 3.x can do some scaling of the
remote/shadowed desktop. Maybe this fits your use case.

*Why do you say some? Can it scale by 200%?*
Maybe this fits your use case.
Actually I prefer individual windows to be managed by the guest’s WM. So sharing the entire desktop is not optimal. It’s what I would get with a VNC solution as well.
*In shadow mode, would X2Go still perform better than VNC? Or would it also just send pixel data?*

Yes. I think so.

Ok. I get that.

It uses the Xdamage and Xtst / Xrecord extension in X11 which
basically is an X11-like VNC, I guess.

No, it can only scale *down*. For example, make one pixels out of two pixels, iff the max window size of the client machine is half the shadow session's size.
Switching the resize mode will give you a 1:1 pixel ratio with viewport maneuvering, again not what you want.

Seriously though: Ctrl-Alt-R. Does ONLY work in shadow sessions. And only has visible effects if the remote session has a higher resolution than your local max window size.

Couldn't find that in the docs anywhere. Will try it out and, if successful, add to the shadow session wiki page.
