It broke for me when I upgraded to 28.

Same here, too. Seeing it on Debian testing and (!) on Debian stretch, too.
On Debian stretch, things used to work well with X2Go + KDE5. Regarding Debian's conservative release policy, this smells like we changed something in X2Go, maybe, too.
Although, this doesn't explain, why KDE5 from Fedora 27 was working ok for Robert.
