As to why you are being told that you are in a desktop session, but aren't seeing a remote desktop - it would be helpful to know which desktop environment you picked when setting up the session.
Xfce, and it is installed on the server--in fact, I'm current using it quite happily with NoMachine, and TigerVNC. But I would like to have x2go as an alternative to NoMachine, which, as I'm sure you know, isn't open source anymore.
I still wonder whether I want a Desktop, Rootless or Shadow session, and where and how that aspect is controlled.
If you want a full desktop or "picture in picture" desktop, then you will want to click the downward-pointing triangle in the lower right corner of the session tile, then select Session Preferences.
Tab "Session", section "Session Type": XFCE Tab "Input/Output", section "Display": "Fullscreen" for a fullscreen remote desktop, or "Custom", followed by width and height, for a "picture in picture" view.
Rootless sessions are triggered by using single application or published application mode, where you don't use a desktop environment at all, and only see single remote applications on your local display.
Shadow sessions are used for taking over a :0 display of the remote host, or for providing user support on an already established X2Go connection. That's the "connect to local desktop" mode.
