Does it work when selecting a different session type, e.g. just a terminal/xterm?
Uli I started with MATE as that was what was on the machine. Same effect, so I installed XFCE as that was used in some examples. I rebooted as well -

The exact same thing happens. I end up with multiple processes using ps that have very similar signatures
