Does it work when selecting a different session type, e.g. just a terminal/xterm?
Uli I started with MATE as that was what was on the machine. Same effect, so I installed XFCE as that was used in some examples. I rebooted as well -

I configured my client to use XFCE and ensured xfce was installedon the server
The server starts fine and I can connect from the client and get prompted for password. I can see the session on the server using ps ax 4504 ?
