One of the Gnome-3 fallback modes (I don't remember which) does work, I've
had it working here, but the menu you get no longer has a System menu on the top bar, so I still prefer Mate. I don't remember what I had to put on the session command or install to get it to work but I did have it working at one point.

IIRC no... At least none not requiring a newer GLX extension. I guess there is a software rendering fallback, but this still fails with NX. GNOME 3 Flashback/Fallback don't work either, so X2Go is sadly currently screwed when it comes to these DE's...
