OK, I'm in trouble. Today libxcomp3 package was updated on my server, apt history log:

Logged out of a running x2go session and tried to start a new session. A X windows with the "X2GO" is displayed for a few seconds and then disappears. Happened before, no worries, retry and it should work. Not this time, I've spent a couple of hours trying to resolve this but can currently not start a new desktop session.

What I've tried so far:
Restarting x2goserver. No difference.
Restarting pulseaudio. No difference.
Updating client and server. Nothing new.
Getting desperate: libxcomp3 3.5.0-2-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20110930~46~build1 NX X
- Rebooted server. No difference.
- Removed all x2go heuler packages (purge + autoremove) and reinstalled them on server. No difference.
- Removed all x2go heuler packages (purge + autoremove) and reinstalled from "main" repo. x2gousers group reintroduced. No difference.
- Discovered that libxcomp3 from heuler was still installed: ii
compression library.
- Removed all server packages and reinstalled from main again. No difference.
- Tried connecting to a different Debian Squeeze server. Success, i e the client is not the problem.
- Added a brand new user to problem server (and x2gousers, fuse groups). Doesn't work.
- Tried starting single application (gedit). Success.
I've done a lot of googling and this message could be a clue (it's logged when the X window closes):
gnome-keyring-daemon[...]: dbus failure unregistering from session: Connection is closed
I get a lot of hits regarding similar problems with failed logins, but unfortunately no known fixes (that worked for me, tried the metacity gconf thing).
I've tried x2goclient-cli, x2goclient, pyhoca-cli and x2goclient on Windows. Can't get a desktop session running with either.
Any ideas?
