Rebooting the remote system cleared the problem

This morning the behavior changed: At least a window opened up showing my remote desktop but, strangely, it's horizontal dimension was wide enough to span both of my two monitors -- but another strange thing is that it was shifted to the right monitor and half of the window was off to that monitor's right. I could reposition the window to span both monitors and do a little work, but when I tried to resize it, within a very short period of time, the window closed. Moreover the log of this session, shown below, indicates the timeout had occurred as it had on prior attempts to connect (well before my window manipulations).

It is happening again. One fairly unusual phenomenon: When I after a couple of attempts to reconnect it challenged me with a dialog showing an xfce4 session -- asking me if I wanted to terminate it or select it. I rarely see that window pop up. I clicked on the existing session,and once I did that, subsequent attempts to reconnect -- although failed -- did not present the session select window again.
