sshd_config in windows build of the x2goclient

Two new features in X2Go Client

Hallo list, I'm very glad to introduce two new features in X2Go Client. 1. Direct RDP connection to Windows Terminal Server. This feature was sponsored from Mirco Rohloff from "Rohloff AG" - http://www.rohloff.de With this feature you can open direct RDP connection using installed on the client system RDP client program without X2Go proxy. It could be useful in mixed environments with both Linux and Windows TS. This feature is only available for Linux client. To use it, choose Session type "Connect to Windows terminal server" in Session preferences. You should also check "Direct RDP Connection". After that you can configure additional setting in tab "Settings". In this tab you can choose display resolution, RDP client to use and also specify additional command line parameters. I suggest to use direct RDP connections only over LAN or VPN connections. Over Internet using X2Go proxy is faster and securer. You can install X2Go Client-3.99.3.0 which contain this feature from our repository "heuler" 2. X2Go client with old (0.9.6) Pulseaudio. This feature was sponsored from Stefan Baur from "BAUR-ITCS UG" - http://office.stefanbaur.de/ This is an alternative "interims" X2Go Client for Windows which includes an obsolete version of Pulseaudio. HOWTO - install ubuntu & x2goserver inside inside LXC containers

The following is a description of how to install Ubuntu & x2go server inside Linux Containers (LXC). All of the following was done on an Ubuntu 12.04 server installed inside LXC containers. These examples are only for a single container but you can either Clone the first container you create and make necessary changes regarding IP addresses (they will be different for each LXC container) or start from scratch and create each manually. If you are not familiar with LXC containers it is a very lightweight & therefore very fast (faster than vmware, kvm, xen etc) technology built into most modern Linux kernels and distributions from Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora etc. Note that LXC does not support installing windows into an LXC container. LXC allows you to provide complete isolation of one container from another by default. However, you can as an admin provide more or less isolation between containers and also between containers and the HOST computer OS. I will NOT go into how LXC works here as there is a lot of information on the web which can help you understand more if you do a google search for "lxc containers" or read some of the "references" I've put at the end of this email. Ubuntu 12.04 has made LXC very easy to use. Canonical has simplified many things to the extreme. Other linux distributions may/will differ on how you create, access etc LXC containers. But lets begin creating our first LXC container and then we will install Bonitasoft inside that container. *STEP 1* Assuming you are using Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop we will install LXC first the create our first container which we will call x2goserver1-lxc. In the following we are going to use an “ubuntu” lxc template. There are other “lxc templates” for debian, fedora, centos etc that you could use if you wanted to install one of those OS inside an LXC Container even if the host is Ubuntu NOTE: you can install any Linux OS into an LXC container the only major rule is that the Linux must use the same Kernel as the Host linux. * sudo apt-get install lxc* Next create the LXC container we are calling x2goserver1-lxc then start up that container: * * * sudo lxc-create -t ubuntu -n x2goserver1-lxc* * sudo lxc-start -n x2goserver1-lxc* The “create” command above will create a new container called "x2goserver1-lxc" and install ubuntu ... using the same version of Ubuntu as your host computer so it will install ubuntu 12.04 inside the LXC container named "x2goserver1-lxc" This will take some time as it downloads all the required files from the Ubuntu repositories and installs them to create a bootable Ubuntu 12.04 system. The “start” command above will actually start the LXC container called "x2goserver1-lxc" and its Ubuntu system and leave you at a terminal command prompt inside the LXC container. *Note:* that the command prompt will be different from a terminal on your HOST computer as you will now be *inside* the container and because we haven't added any additional user accounts yet the login USERID will be the default which is "ubuntu". The command prompt should look something like the following: *ubuntu@x2goserver1-lxc:~$* Create a User Accounts for the users that will be using this container: *sudo adduser user-name1* * etc.* *STEP 2* While logged into the container and at the terminal prompt install whatever other tools you usually use. In my case, because I wanted to see if x2go would work so I installed the ubuntu desktop and the x2go server components. Install the Ubuntu Desktop: *sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop* when this completes reboot Ubuntu in the LXC container: *sudo shutdown -r now* this will reboot ubuntu in the container so the desktop environment will be available. Login again and continue. Next install the x2go "server" side applications so I can later access the container using the x2goclient on my HOST PC. Next add the x2go repository: * sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable* * sudo apt-get update* Install the x2go "server" side components: * sudo apt-get install x2goserver sudo apt-get install x2goserver-session* On your HOST computer install the x2go client: * sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install x2goclient* *STEP 3* This step is important if you want to be able to access the LXC container from the host using SSH or whatever other tools you use. The genesis of this step is from Stephane Graber who has taught me alot about LXC from his blog. This step is: 1. performed outside of your linux container and must be done for the USER that will be accessing the x2goserver1-lxc. 2. will require that you know the container IP address. Each LXC container will have a different IP address even though they are all running on the same PC 3. is necessary to allow someone on the HOST computer to access a container using the container's name with something like SSH etc. for example in our case "ssh userID-on-x2goserver1@x2goserver1-lxc" will log the user-of-bos1-name into the container and leave them at a terminal prompt *Add the following to each users ~/.ssh/config file. Note you may have to create ~/.ssh/config if it doesn't yet exist and change the lxc-container IP address to the container that each user is assigned to work with.** * note: each of the following should be a single line entry Host *.lxc StrictHostKeyChecking no UserKnownHostsFile /dev/null ProxyCommand nc $(host $(echo %h | sed "s/\\\\.lxc//g") * my-lxc-container-ip-address* | tail -1 | awk '{print $NF}') %p Host *.libvirt StrictHostKeyChecking no UserKnownHostsFile /dev/null ProxyCommand nc $(host $(echo %h | sed "s/\\\\.libvirt//g") * my-host-ip-address* | tail -1 | awk '{print $NF}') %p >From now on you can access the x2goserver1-lxc container using either SSH or the x2go client *STEP 4* If you want to use x2go start the x2goclient, then on the HOST create a new x2go "session" and add info about what LXC container IP address you want to connect to, what desktop (unity, gnome etc) and what speed is the connection (change this by moving the slider to LAN since we want the fastest/no compression) and then save. Start the x2goclient session and log into the LXC container. From now on you can do everything as if you were on your HOST PC. Just remember you will be inside the LXC container so you are separated from your host and changes made will only be to the LXC container's Ubuntu. *PARTING THOUGHTS* The reason for doing all of this? Well there are several I can think of but I’ll just name a couple: 1. Linux is now available on ARM. ARM cpu’s don’t support h/w virtualization solutions like vmware, kvm, xen etc. but since LXC does NOT require h/w virtualization you can use LXC containers to provide different and isolated compute environments even on ARM computers. 2. LXC is much faster than vmware, kvm, xen because there is no h/w virtualization and because its part of the linux kernel each container can have as much or as little direct access to the HOST PC resources as you want to configure (read up about LXC CGROUPS). 3. Whereas Vmware, kvm, xen etc all require at least one dedicated cpu “core” for each virtual machine you can only run so many VMs concurrently on a system.. LXC does not have this restriction so with LXC there are many people running as many as 50-80 LXC containers on a single server although your mileage may vary depending on what each container has installed, how much CPU, memory etc is available. 4. Maybe you’d like to have multiple customers each with an x2goserver but isolated from each other without resorting to the expense of separate servers for each customer? 5. Web Servers often don’t really need dedicated servers or even dedicated Virtual Machines. LXC Containers works great for that purpose. Remember I said that LXC containers can be as isolated from each other and from the HOST as you want. They start totally isolated but we changed that a bit above so you could ssh or x2go into a container by adding the 2 statements to a users ~/.ssh/config file However, you can allow LXC containers to share a HOST file system/directory, or even a something like an SQL server running on the HOST (again read about LXC CGROUPS). I may have forgotten a step or mistyped something here and if so send me a note and I'll double check and make any addition/correction. X-Server cannot be started

Dear maintainer, when I try to start x2goclient on Windows I get an error message: X-Server lässt sich nicht starten. Bitte überprüfen Sie Ihre Installation. (X-server cannot be started, please, check your installation.) Reinstalling x2goclient did not solve the problem. Starting as administrator does not help either. Issue with keyboard layout settings / altGr key

Hello, I'm lookings for help for configuring the keyboard layout in X2go sessions. I'm not sure i'm on the good mailing-list for that, please excuse me if i'm not. I'm using X2goserver 3.1.1.3 on a debian machine, and i connect from windows with X2goClient 3.99.2.2, on a lxde desktop session. By default, i'm connected with a french keyboard layout, so it's good, apparently, but the AltGr Key does not work, nor does the "ctrl+alt" combo supposed to behave the same way. It means i can't type letters such as " #, {, |, @ " ... So i tried to switch to us layout keyboard ( not the best solution, but at least, will reduce the need for an AltGr key ) , but i didn't managed to. I tried several way i found on the faq, on the mailing list, etc.. 1) In the session preference, on the client : the parameter keyboard layout / model is ignored, i'm still in french. 2) using setxkbmap in a terminal during the session : it returns an error # setxkbmap us >No protocol specified > Cannot open display ":51.0" 3) Putting "auto" in keyboard type session preference, then from the session, editing ~/.x2go/<session>/keyboard , then call x2gosetkeyboard. The command return no error, but makes no change. Any help on how to get the AltGr key to function properly, or, by default, any help on how to switch to the us keyboard will be greatly appreciated. x2go installation: not tftp running

we try to install x2go but tftp is not running. the system use rlinetd but in the file /etc/rlinetd.conf no service is configured i use ubuntu 12.04 and install x2go as described in documentation before it was using /etc/inetd.conf is it the mistake and how to start tftp with rlinetd? i wonder is i am aloen with this problem michel

x2go connecting timout with TCE

At the moment we are buildung up a x2go environment. It should contain TFTP-Boot, LDAP-Auth and Load Balancing. the tftp-boot is working (the login-client appears). But now i have following problem: It's not possible to connect so the server (from the syslinux image, which is booting over tftp). The Details of the login-page say following: Info: Proxy running in client mode with pid '1909' Session: Starting session at '...Date...Time...' Info: Connecting to remote hose 'localhost:31001'. ZeitüberschreitungInfo: Aborting the procedure due to signal '15'. Session: Session terminated at '...Date...Time...' I've found an old discussion of this, but there is no solution documented: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.user/539 It's weired because the desktop client is working perfectly. x2go thinclient shutdown button crashed

Hello, after the X2go Team integrated the Thinclient Shutdown Button funktion from the "x2gothinshutdown" packet to the normal x2goclient packet we have some problems with this switch. If you use the Thinclient some working hours you can not switch the client with the button off! Mostley if you work only a short time the button works well! Did anybody has the some problem or maybe a work around for this problem. Thanks Mirco Rohloff

x2gothinclient performance

Hi x2go users, I'm trying out x2go in thin client mode on more recent hardware (ZOTAC ZBOX, AMD E-350, 2 GB RAM). I experience both bad performance and high CPU load the client side, even worse than on my legacy Intel P III 1 GHz systems some time ago. Notable the x2goclient process consumes about 30% CPU time (one of tow cores) whenever a session is active - even a simple terminal (single application -> terminal) waiting for input. Which options are recommended for local (1 GBit LAN) usage? Thanks in advance. Any hints are appreciated. PyHoca on Windows 7 "crashes" when connecting to x2goserver on Ubuntu 12.04

Hello all, I have a very strange problem with PyHoca GUI on Windows 7. So I have a few Ubuntu VM Hosts (KVM). On this hosts I have installed a few VMs with Ubuntu 12.04 desktop and installed the x2goserver, x2gognomebindings, x2goserver-pyhoca and x2goserver-xsession from the X2Go stable PPA. I want to use PyHoca GUI on a Windows Box at work. But the problem now is that PyHoca "crashes" when I try to start a session on the server (session start command is /usr/bin/gnome-session-fallback). PyHoca don't open up a session window. I produces very crude output so there are much litle windows with the title VcXSrv X and on the top of the display there is a small line with a black line. The line was also colored a few times. I don't know why this is happening. Is this a bug in PyHoca? The normal X2Go client is able to start up a session correctly but I want to use multiple session at the same time from different x2goservers and only PyHoca gives me this ability. Would be great when someone could help me out. Also I wan't to say that X2Go is one of the best open source projects which is doing a great work. Thanks for that. Best Regards P.S. Audio device selection

I have X2go server at Ubuntu 12.04 and client at Windows7, both the latest version. Where and how I can set which of my audio devices is used by x2go client (pulseaudio)? At the moment it will use defaultdevice (and will follow the change) but I would like to fix it to another. In client settings there is no such place and in server there is PulseAudio Volume Control where I will see only the same default device.

GVFS does not work

I'm using Debian testing and XFCE. Everything works perfectly, save for GVFS. When I try to open in nautilus or any other GVFS-enabled application a GVFS mount (like, sftp) it fails. Other programs don't even give me the option to use the different possible GVFS options. However, GVFS does work perfectly if used locally (without X2go). Does anybody has any idea about what I could do? Thanks Ismael

Window Manager Blank

Well this is what I love about spending alot of time to set things up: one day POOF, it's busted and requires hours of troubleshooting to fix. Suddenly when I run x2go as client now, I get the individual windows of the remote machine like konsole and filemanager, but I do not get any window manager action, like the panel, plasmoids, or background. Debian Testing. I've de/reinstalled x2go, dist-upgraded, cleared old sessions, restarted the daemon, and nothing helps. This machine runs KDE just fine on the main terminal. Can Only Keep One Session at a Time

Maybe we could indroduce a new "stable" branch, together with the coming Debian Wheezy, for usage in production environments? With only security fixes, and eventually some very little other fixes? (For me it's not really needed that the support is all the livetime of Wheezy. I mean, there could come a next version with at some point, but it's important that there is enough time to test it.) Three types of thin clients are in use: 1) Shuttle X27D, Atom 330, Intel 945GC ICH7 chipset, Intel GMA950 2) Shuttle XS35V2, Atom 525, Intel NM10 Express chipset, Intel GMA3150 3) Shuttle XS36V, Atom D2700, Intel NM10 Express chipset Intel GMA3650 With the standard kernel 2.6.32-686, we didn't manage to run higher resolutions than 1280x1024 on all of them, neither on the greeting screen nor on the Gnome desktop (Ubuntu 10.04). I embedded kernel 3.2.0 in the boot environment. With it, the Shuttle X27D works fine with a resolution up to 1920x1080, but the preferred fanless XS35V2 and XS36V boxes still do not work with higher resolutions than 1280x1024. You will find further informations in the attachment, The two graphics GMA950 and GMA3650 are considered. Log's from GMA3150 look similar to the GMA3650 ones. The error message "(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory" in the file "Xorg.0.log-GMA3650" is obvious, also I don't understand way it happened. Does someone have a hint how to change the configuration, so that the nice fanless boxes will work in higher display resolutions too, up to 1920x1080? Hi, I upgraded the server ( debian squeeze ) and now no-one can do client side printing. I cant check the spool dir as chown / chmod dont work on the seesion dir. does anyone have a fix for this? I have tried the latest x2go client and pyhoca with no success. Kind Regards, Kris.

A couple of applications had lost their window decorations if the server is Debian wheezy / Ubuntu maverick or newer. Hello, I am using x2go as an alternative to the overpriced commercial product from NoMachine. So far the road has been bumpy. Here is an honest description of problems I encountered when trying to install x2go server on an rhel6 machine: 1) Contrary to debian packeages, the repo to use for rhel 6 is not advertized on the main download page. This leads to attempts to install from source, when a binary package is in fact available. 2) Instructions for installation from source are unclear and outdated. GIT paths no longer work, configuration info is not sufficient etc. 3) Once the repo has been found, and installation does not work out of the box, because no package for fuse-sshfs.x86_64 available on RHEL6. Could you add that package to your repo? 4) Once installation is is complete, several things do not work as expected... 4.1) File permissions are incorrect: sudo: /etc/sudoers.d/x2go is mode 0644, should be 0440 4.2) On a server with gnome installed, but no complete X installation, creating a connection fails (session terminates during session start procedure with no clear error message). It turns out that with X installed and running (runlevel 5) x2go works properly. At runlevel 3, even with all packages installed it does not work. This differs from the free trial version of the commercial NX-server. Is this the way it is supposed to work or is there a service that is required and missing at runlevel 3? 4.3) In the install from source documentation, reference is made to int scripts needed which should run 'x2gocleansessions' in background/daemon mode. No such script is installed but connections still can function (at runlevel 5, see point 4.2 above). The X2Go project is a great initiative and fills a clear need in the community. With a little effort, you could increase your visibility, gain more traction and increase both your user and your developer bases. Regardless.. good work so far. I would appreciate an answer to the runlevel question (point 4.2). With the rest, take it as constructive criticism and act on it as you like. This release fixes several issues: (1) x2gocleansessions was broken quite a bit. Crashes occurred when sessions have been found running and x2gocleansessions tried to shut them down. Also the occuring zombie processes caused by x2gocleansessions and observed by some of you should now be gone. (2) With PostgreSQL as session db backend, the display would increment and increment and increment and... (3) Fixes session startup failures with pam_tmpdir.so being in use for user sessions. (4) Mount client-side shares to /tmp/.x2go-<user>/{media,spool,mimebox}. So we reduced this to one location. (5) NX session.log get now written to /tmp/.x2go-<user>/<session.log>. Global Unity bar issue in x2go

Hello List i have upgraded my X2go server and X2go client to the newest versions, as i heard that Ubuntu's Unity interface is now supported. I have stumbled upon an error regarding the top menu in Unity. When i click on a menu item, like the cogwheel used to log out, it disappears when i release the mouse. To use the menus, i have to hold down the mouse button to use them, and release when i am over the desired menu item, like "log out". I get this error on Windows 7, on X2go client V. 3.99.2.1, Xming is running, and will have to go back to an older release, as the new releases all did that so far. I asked this question before, but had no answer whatsoever: is there a bug tracker for X2go? Is this error before known? is there a work around instead of downgrading? Thanks, Markus

X2Go on CentOS 6.2 with PyHoca as Client

Hey all, I want to use X2Go at CentOS 6.2. So I installed a KVM virtual maschine with a CentOS 6.2 minimal system. I installed GNOME and X11 with a yum groupinstall command like follows: yum groupinstall "Desktop" "Desktop Platform" "X Window System" "Fonts" Than I added the RHEL6 X2Go Rep which is listed at the X2Go Page (http://www.x2go.org/doku.php/external:linux-distributions) Than I installed x2goserver, python-x2go and x2gognomebindings like follows: yum install x2goserver python-x2go x2gognomebindings After this I added a profil in PyHoca, to connect to the server and tried to start a GNOME session. PyHoca says that it starts the session and immediatly after the startup it says that the session is shut down. So PyHoca doesn't get to the point that it start a session window or something like that it directly shut down the session. The only thing I found on a logfile (/var/log/messages) is that the session got start correctly. Here is the log entry: Jun 15 20:45:45 testdom0 /usr/bin/x2gostartagent: successfully started X2Go agent session with ID lukas-51-1339785943_stDGNOME_dp17 Jun 15 20:45:49 testdom0 /usr/bin/x2goruncommand: launching session with Xsession-x2go mechanism, using STARTUP="gnome-session" There is no more information in the logfiles, no errors, no warnings or something like that. Does someone have a working x2goserver on CentOS and can explain what to do to get it running with PyHoca as client? Or can someone give me information where the error could be located? Best Regards

Hey all, we are using X2Go in a thin client environment via PXE boot. We used debian linux and the official documentation for setup. All works fine. What we want now is to have autologin for the thin clients. In the past we used LTSP and there is a config file, where you can bind autologin to mac addresses (http://aacable.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/ubuntu-ltsp-lts-conf-example-for-au…) How can we realize this behavior with X2Go? Removal of EsounD support

Hi all, I'm thinking about removing ESD support from x2goclient altogether. During my recent deep changes to the PulseAudio integration for X2goclient on both Windows and Mac OS X, I came across the ESD sound support. On Windows, ESD was supported through the PulseAudio wrapper, while OS X was totally broken anyway. Testing ESD support proves to be difficult, and I'm thinking about removing it completely. Most Linux distributions have already removed esd (and tools) from their repo, or rather replaced it by the PulseAudio esd compat layer. That's especially true for Ubuntu, but also Debian Testing and Unstable (Debian Stable still has esd for x86 and amd64 arches, but this will be dropped in favor of PulseAudio in the upcoming release.) That said, I'd like to know whether users are still using esd or not. I wouldn't feel comfortable removing a feature still in use. Please report, if you find the time. Best regards, Mihai

sshd not running error on Mac client although ssh enabled

I have installed x2go client on a Mac (snow leopard). The main terminal server functionality works well, however, I do not get local file access and printing enabled due to an "ssdh not running" error. SSH is enabled on the Mac. Has anyone solved this problem without the need to install or recompile additional software ? thanks for any help, Mark
