Libreoffice starts extremely slowly only in x2go session

Hello! VM on an ESXI, Lubuntu 22.04, 6GB RAM. When I start Libreoffice (currently 7.5.4.2) in an x2go session, it takes 2-3 minutes. It also takes a long time to start again. Start in the terminal gives no error message. If I start a session directly in the browser console of the connection to the ESXI, LibreOffice needs about 2 seconds to start. Libreoffice is a direct download of the *.deb and installation via dpkg -i. Where is the mistake? Greeting, Olaf

Hello! I've been using x2go for a long time and I've always had the problem of jerky scrolling on websites. In the meantime, however, I use cloud services in the browser, and now another one is added. This is practically no longer usable with my x2go installation. Is there a combination (Linux OS + browser) that runs really fast? Videos aren't important, but modern websites shouldn't be stuttering. Greeting, Olaf

broken dependencies for Debian 10 + 11

Hi, the release of X2Go Server 4.1.0.4 caused several issues on the Debian systems I administer (mostly 11, but 10 is affected as well). The main cause: The source package x2gokdrive and its binary package xserver-x2gokdrive is missing from the main archive. I had to manually backport it from heuler to get around this. Further cause: insufficient Breaks+Replaces between libx2go-server-perl 4.1.0.4 and libx2go-utils-perl 4.1.0.3 (same file installed from both packages). Upon purging all x2go packages to get a clean system, I was left with a broken dpkg-statoverride that should have been cleaned up in some postrm script but wasn't. More detailed output for all 3 issues is in the attached txt file. It's in German, but the relevant information should be understandable anyway. Best wishes -- .''`. wayland client keyboard mapping problems

I've been using x2go for a long time now, with X11 on server and client. I use remapping of caps->ctrl (old emacs guy). After struggling with problems using X11 on client and server side, this seems to have been resolved for the last couple of years and life was good. Now I'm trying wayland on the client side. So far things work, except the keyboard mapping problem is back. Every time I reconnect when I hit caps in emacs (running on server) it is not mapped to ctrl. Using xfce on server (kde on client) I seem to each time need to open keyboard settings (xfce) and fiddle with it toggling the cryptically-named Alt+ctrl keyboard variant setting and then my mapping works again. Any suggestions? It would be great if it just worked, like it did on X11. But if I could just run a cli command to fix it on the server each time I connect I could also live with that. Thanks, Neal

temporarily disable pxe / Kernel panic

Hello! In my existing system, x2go including the pxe server runs on a virtual machine. Since I've had a few problems with it for a long time, such as windows closing immediately when calling up an already running session from one PC to the other, I would like to test a new installation in another virtual machine. However, the old and the new system presumably get in the way(?) Odd problem connecting to linux

I've come across an odd problem. From windows and linux clients I'm attempting to connect to a linux system, rocky linux 8.7, and run a single application. Terminator is the application but it seems as though most any app behaves the same. If noone is logged onto the remote linux systems gnome desktop the connection works okay. But if for instance I'm logged into gnome on the linux box and try to get a terminator shell over x2go the terminator window pops up on the linux desktop instead of being redirected back to the client side of the connection. On the linux server side: X11Forwarding is set to yes. X11UseLocalhost is set to no, it was set to yes previously but the change didn't effect the behavior. AllowAgentForwarding and AllowTcpForwarding are both set to default which should be yes. Many segfault across multiple desktops via X2go server on EL9 systems

I originally submitted a detailed bug report at the Mate Desktop issues Github page here https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-desktop/issues/553. I subsequently discovered that other desktops are similarly affected. All of them experienced segfaults or kernel traps in parts of their components, particularly in the Marco window manager that Mate uses. I have also tried Gnome, Kde, xfce, Cinnamon & Icewm desktops, again on a Centos Stream 9 system. Similar results were found on an Alma 9 system so I do not believe the problem is specific to the 'upstream' / lesser-tested nature of CS9. Apart from Icewm which remained usable even with the segfaults, the other desktops (particularly Mate which we use a lot for remote working) are rendered unusable by this problem. None of our Centos 7 systems have this problem. I am running out of ideas to diagnose/fix this problem. Any thoughts? Font display issues with Motif and X2go

I have a GUI which gives different output when run under X2go and ssh -X or vnc. In the attached image, the left window is running under X2go. The text overflows the buttons, text at ends of lines are truncated, and some text overlays adjacent text. The right window is running remotely using "ssh -X". When I connect to the remote system using tigervnc, the GUI displays correctly. This looks like a problem with X2Go's X rendering. Is there anything I can do to fix this? -- Michael Eager

hi all， I'm using x2goclient v.4.1.2.2 for windows, connecting to CentOS 7.9 x2goserver 4.1.0.3. When I open the CAD software on the remote desktop and drag my model, the picture is not smooth, and the image display is very jumpy. The client parameters I use are Connection speed: ADSL Compression Method: 256-jpeg Image quality: 0 display width: 2560 height: 1449 DPI: 80 I tried adjusting these parameters and found that there is not much improvement, but if I shrink the remote desktop window, it will become very smooth. Is there any method or parameter setting to make the picture smooth? Hope someone can help me. Thanks. --Yeahwc

Suspending/resuming sessions give the same result between the mate- and the xfce4-desktop: Windows from other workspaces do not appear (but firefox knows them and its taskmanager can bring them up - the appear on the originally used workspace). May be, this is just another hint. Typically a window manager will store the workspace to use in the _NET_WM_DESKTOP property of a window. You can check that with xprop | grep _NET_WM_DESKTOP (selected the window you are interested in with the mouse). Alternatively you can run xprop -id <windowid> | grep _NET_WM_DESKTOP. Whenever a published application opens a window it will open this window on the x2goagent/nxagent on the server AND open a clone window on you local X server. Internally the agent has a mapping between the window ids of each window pair. On suspend the windows on the local X server are closed, the ones on the agent stay. On resume/reconnect the agent winn again open (new!) clone windows on the local X server and update their window ids in its list. When the local window manager sets the _NET_WM_DESKTOP property the agent will register this and _should_ update the _NET_WM_DESKTOP property on the agent side window, too. If a client changes a window property the agent will forward this change to the twin window on the local X server EXCEPT for properties starting with for WM_, _NET_ and for the _KDE_NET_WM_SYSTEM_TRAY_WINDOW_FOR property. So if firefox is trying to handle these properties itself this might explain why the workspace is not honored (just speculating, have not tested further). But I am wondering: If, e.g., a window was placed on, say, workspace 4 and then suspended and the resume happens on a setup that only has one or two workspaces what would happen? Also there might be further problems arising from restored windows having an other window id than previously. If the window manager chooses to store some workspace information depending on the window id (I don't know if any WM is doing this) this will not work with the restored windows. I am also wondering if setting the desired workspace by the client (in this case the agent is a client to the local X server) is honored by the WM at all. So can you please to some tests with the xprop command described above (run it from a local terminal, NOT from a published application) and check the properties of those windows before and after the reconnect? Hello! Addendum. I'll add obervations, which may be related. 1) Firefox stucks - no data comes in, network 0b/s. 2) Viewing video, video stucks shortly after start. If this just happens, just change the current workspace on the client side (where the windows are) and switch back immidiately: Problem "solved" in the same moment. The one window has its data, the other play the video. Looks like, it has something to do with window manager or something, which is not knowing, where the rigth window is? (I am using published applications most of the time). Update. Due to updates, I had to shutdown all and restart. This make verything shine golden and remind me, that immidiately after starting the x2go client (and server!), perf is really well (I described my hw/sw already). Its usually over time, that perf degrades that much. Over time is someting really over days, because I usually do no shutdowns, but hibernate my workstation. What I saw before the restart, was additionally a laggy scrolling behavior in Firefox and it reminds me, that I saw this bevore - looks probably related to the memory leak of the x2goagent. After the restart, scrolling works fine. Related. I have two lxc-containers running on my gateway, one for dns, one for a squid proxy. Both works well, but sometimes, perf is in question. I usually run a terminal to the gateway host and monitor this containers using lxc-top. The related thing is: relative high cpu (20%) and growing mem-use, the reason, they must finally rebooted each two weeks. Now, I've disabled x2goserver in both containers and I am running the third day now: 0%(!!) cpu, NO memory leak. They all run debian buster (fully upgraded) on kernel 5.10, x2goserver 4.1.0.3-4. May be this helps. So the memory-leak seems to be obvious. In the current, new cycle for my main-use, mem climbed already up from 0.6% to 5.0%. Hello, and thanks for your help. First, to mention about about firefox: If one runs firefox on the local machine, restauration after crash are always correct! I understand your explanation about the workspace number. At time of my question, the number of workspaces between user local and on the server were really different. But this should not matter, because - more "accidentally" - my test happened on the first eight workspaces (at that time, the server have luckily had 8 for this user). I made the test you mentioned and the _NET_WM_DESKTOP is always present (before suspend and after restore), BUT windows, which were located in different workspaces even do NOT appear - I checked all workspaces (because I use a lot of them, I have "tools" for this). To the checks. The problem with the firefox windows was the massivst problem, due to the huge amout of windows to re-arrange, but behind it, is the probably bigger problem: After shutdown or hibernate,most(!) of my remote sessions do NOT appear at all! Firefox, compared, runs in a KVM guest an my host and hibernate freeze everything - this survives! Typically a window manager will store the workspace to use in the _NET_WM_DESKTOP property of a window. You can check that with xprop | grep _NET_WM_DESKTOP (selected the window you are interested in with the mouse). Alternatively you can run xprop -id <windowid> | grep _NET_WM_DESKTOP. Whenever a published application opens a window it will open this window on the x2goagent/nxagent on the server AND open a clone window on you local X server. Internally the agent has a mapping between the window ids of each window pair. On suspend the windows on the local X server are closed, the ones on the agent stay. On resume/reconnect the agent winn again open (new!) clone windows on the local X server and update their window ids in its list. When the local window manager sets the _NET_WM_DESKTOP property the agent will register this and _should_ update the _NET_WM_DESKTOP property on the agent side window, too. If a client changes a window property the agent will forward this change to the twin window on the local X server EXCEPT for properties starting with for WM_, _NET_ and for the _KDE_NET_WM_SYSTEM_TRAY_WINDOW_FOR property. So if firefox is trying to handle these properties itself this might explain why the workspace is not honored (just speculating, have not tested further). But I am wondering: If, e.g., a window was placed on, say, workspace 4 and then suspended and the resume happens on a setup that only has one or two workspaces what would happen? Also there might be further problems arising from restored windows having an other window id than previously. If the window manager chooses to store some workspace information depending on the window id (I don't know if any WM is doing this) this will not work with the restored windows. I am also wondering if setting the desired workspace by the client (in this case the agent is a client to the local X server) is honored by the WM at all. So can you please to some tests with the xprop command described above (run it from a local terminal, NOT from a published application) and check the properties of those windows before and after the reconnect? Does the _NET_WM_DESKTOP property get lost? Please also post the output of xprop -root | grep -e ^_NET -e ^WM - this will show the window manager related configuration. I'm running x2goclient-4.1.2.2 on a Fedora 37 system, connecting to a Fedora 33 system running x2goserver-4.1.0.3 and nxagent-3.5.99.26. The x2goagent segfaults: x2goagent[164463]: segfault at 48 ip 000055a0be4ce7ff sp 00007ffc443b5090 error 4 in nxagent[55a0be3c5000+311000] There appears to be a similar bug on RedHat: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2028716 What can I do to make this work? -- Michael Eager

File Sharing in X2GoClient stopped working with Win11

Hi all, Folder sharing suddenly stopped working after one of the latest Windows 11 updates. It was working fine below, but now users are reported either seeing this error: "Failed to open URI "file://tmp/.x2go-username/media/disk/_cygdrive_C_Users_username_foldername" and "No such file or directory". Or not seeing that error, but files still not showing on the remote server. In both cases (i.e., error and no error) the remote server *does* list the shared folders on the remote server under ~/media/disk. When there is no error, the folder just looks empty. Both users have the latest client for Windows v4.1.2.2. Also, although I do not know if it is related, a command line window opens every time I start X2GoClient on Windows and shows this error: /cygdrive/C/Users/user.name/.x2go/etc/sshd_config line 3: Deprecated option UsePrivilegeSeparation Any help would be much appreciated! As long as they are inside the terminals main-window, everything works (sad to say: most of the time). If there are two separate windows, which are in the current workspace, this works too. Below of that, it gets complicated. If two windows are in separate workspaces, it works sometimes. I am not sure, why at all - from your guess. If you have two terms at WS1 and WS3 and you resume on WS5, NO window appear at all, though the processes are running well on the server side! Resume/restoration of windows to linux workspaces

Hello! I am using published applications to run firefox. I am on debian bullseye (client and server). There is a big behavioral difference from using fox between this and using fox local in regard of crash and restore. If the fox restores a crashed window set locally, all windows appear on the workspace, they were originally running on. Not so with x2go - they all appear in the workspace, were the restauration starts. I usually have >50 windows and this is a big pain. Is this the normal behavior? If not, where to look for the problem? Note, this does not depend on a users profile. I created an additional user on the server and it behaves the same. Thanks, Manfred

socket bind error with Windows client

Hello, randomly (about one in three attempts) when I try to connect to one of my x2go sessions, it doesn't work and I'm getting the error Can't create SSH tunnel for the start of the X2GO Session (NX): socket bind error localhost:57030 (translated from German, hope it's correct). netstat doesn't seem to list the port as being in use. So far I didn't find any other way to recover the situation other than rebooting, which is a bit of a hassle sometimes. Client is "X2GoClient V. 4.1.2.2 (Qt - 4.8.6)" Curiously, the second x2go session I use to seems to connect without issues all the time. In case it matters: The machine is connected using OpnnVPN. Turning off antivirus didn't make a difference. Any ideas? - Hanno

Can't get X2Go connection opened, with error PANIC! The remote NX proxy closed the connection.

In short: X2Goserver is hosted in Ubuntu 22.04 computer. It is being accessed from Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 11. Previously, everything worked well, but today morning, I could not any more get connection to this computer, not from Ubuntu or from Windows 11. Force using IPv6 in x2goclient

Hello I'm connecting to some hosts behind NAT. These hosts are using dynv6 DNS so I'm able to SSH directly to them, if I instruct SSH to use only IPv6, not IPv4. How can I instruct the X2Go client to use only IPv6 when connecting to some host? Thanks and best regards, Kalle

Copy/paste from client not working

I'm connecting to a Fedora 37 server running KDE Plasma from a Fedora 33 KDE system. The version of X2Go installed on the server is 4.1.0.3. The version on the client 4.1.2.2. I'm connecting using the X2Goclient and bidirectional clipboard is enabled. I can copy from the server and paste on the client, but the reverse, from client to server, does not work. xrandr settings - how do you handle this?

Do you connect to a running x2go session using screens with different resolutions? Let's say I started an x2go session (xfce) from my laptop, which happens to be 1920x1600. Later I connect to that same session, this time using a monitor with say 3840x2160. Now I need to resize everything. Going the other way is even worse. How do you handle this? Thanks, Neal

strange display issue with SDL apps

Hi, I was running sz81, a ZX81 emulator using SDL, remotely with an IRC client and noticed, that while it worked nicely if started in a session using an x2go Linux client, after disconnecting the session and reconnecting using a Windows client, the application window came up garbled with display artifacts. What's more, if I disconnect and reconnect the session using a Linux client, it somehow manages to blank my complete local display as soon as the SDL application window gets focus. This confused the hell out of me, and I first suspected a crash, until I figured out what was going on. It's really an SDL issue, I verified by running parallax-4.tar.gz from http://olofson.net/examples.html which displayed the same behaviour. I would guess x2go has some kind of SDL passthrough mode which is somewhat buggy and doesn't work with windows. Is that correct, or what is the expected behaviour? - Hanno

X2Go Black Window Opens Then Closes Instantly Upon Connection

I set up a new Linux system, initially with Centos 7 and installed X2Go from Epel. When I try to connect, then a black window opens that says X2Go on the background and then closes instantly. I tried from a client on the same machine, from a client on different Linux machines, and from a 4.1.2.0 and 4.1.2.2 clients on WIndows machines. All exhibit the same behavior. I have other Centos 7 machines that I can connect to fine with the same clients. I switched to OS to Rocky Linux 8 for unrelated reasons. I still get the same behavior. I have other Rocky Linux 8 systems that I can connect to without problems. THe rest of this post was obtained using Rocky Linux 8. X2Goserver is v. 4.1.0.3-17.el8.1 I have selected XFCE., disabled Sound and Printing support, as well as SSH port forwarding on Shared Folders tab. I disabled compositing. I stopped the firewall and also setenforce 0 to stop selinux form blocking anything. I tried the following procedure and I can start the XFCE environment without any problems. It does not crash. ----------------------- 1. Instead of starting an x2go session run ssh -X to the server in two terminals 2. in the first ssh connection run "nxagent -ac :55" (55 is the one I use normally, you can use any number here). An empty window should appear 3. in the second ssh session run "xterm -display :55". The empty window will now show you an frameless xterm 4. start the desktop environment by entering "startxfce4" into the xterm. If that doesn't work try startlxde or just run a window manager, e.g. "openbox &" 5. in the desktop environment run your application and try to provoke the "crash" 6. post the end of nxagent's output from the first terminal ------------------------- I ran the Windows debug client and set the server log mode to debug. I include the logs at bottom. I read through posts about similar issues in the last seven years but could not find anything that helped. Libreoffice Writer breaks x2go session

Hi, starting libreoffice writer freezes the display, and the local window of the x2go session closes a moment later. Reconnecting behaved similarly, ie. as soon as the contents on my session (and therefore the libreoffice window) appears, the session freezes again. Dear $ALL, A lot of real-life events had to be cancelled in 2020-2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some became online or hybrid events. In September 2022, LinuxDay.AT was the first to dare to return to a real-life event format. Now, LinuxDays Chemnitz is following suit: Their event takes place on the weekend of March 11th/March 12, 2023, in their pre-pandemic location, the Campus Reichenhainer Street of the Technical University Chemnitz. We have been able to secure a booth there, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, we are a bit shorter on booth staff than originally planned. So if anyone is planning to attend anyways, or at least considering to attend, please reply to this message (off-list, see Reply-To header). No promises, but we might be able to get you a free ticket in exchange for volunteering at our booth (this depends on the CLT folks' goodwill, as we're past the sign-up date). Also, we'll see if we can pick you up/drop you off somewhere along the route and see if we can get a room reserved for you as well. Again, no promises, as this is all very last minute and not going as expected, but we'll do our best. Note: There is no official mask mandate at the venue, but wearing a mask is strongly recommended. Assuming pre-pandemic attendance rates, you can expect 3600 visitors passing the booths in 2 days (opening hours are 8am-6pm on Saturday and 9am-6pm on Sunday). That is A. LOT. Which means the infection risk is way higher than on, say, public transport during a morning commute. x2go disconnect timeout

Hello, I'm running a few always connected GUI applications on a server in an x2go session. This usually works fine, especially when I manually disconnect x2goclient after work (I have set X2GO_NXOPTIONS="sleep=0" in x2goagent.options). But when the x2go connection fails unexpectedly, e.g. because of network issues, or because I suspend my laptop without disconnecting x2go first, my GUI applications get stalled until they disconnect most of the time. After 2 minutes or somesuch they reconnect and keep running. I guess this is because the x2go server session waits for the x2go client to come back, and only disconnects (and keeps running in the disconnected state) after some timeout. I would like to know if this timeout can be configured somewhere. I would prefer to have to reconnect my client more often, instead of having the mentioned GUI applications reconnect. Hi, im currently trying to figure out the x2gohtmlclient. I have a server with x2go installed and want to run the webserver on a different machine. From my understanding, the x2gohtmlclient-Host contacts the x2go server using ssh. freezing after update to fedora 37

Been using x2go for many fedora releases. After updating both client and server to fedora f37, I have a new problem. I've tried multiple desktops, including xfce and lxde, and have the same symptoms. After starting a session, it initially works fine. When I come back later to try to use it, it is frozen. So I have not disconnected from the session and reconnected. On the client side the screen was locked and then unlocked when I returned. The client did not suspend - it is running on A/C power. The session is frozen and completely unresponsive to input. Disconnect/reconnect it's still frozen. Only terminate/new session will unfreeze it. Any suggestions? Thanks Neal

Hi $ALL, It's been a while, but now it is time for not only one, but two X2Go Events. As you all know, the Covid-19 pandemic kept us from hosting our usual X2Go: The Gathering events in 2021 and 2022. So instead of gathering, we'll now spread out. Instead of meeting for a weekend in "meatspace", like we used to, we'll now meet online during the work week starting 18:00 CET/MEZ each day (or possibly even later, given volunteer feedback), and only for a few hours each day. X2Go: The Spread 2021.5 (2022-11-28 to 2022-12-02) is the replacement event for X2Go: The Gathering 2021, which had to be cancelled due to illness of several core members. This event starts in a little less than a week - but if you can't make it on such short notice, do not worry. X2Go: The Spread 2021.5 will be more of an informal virtual meetup, with people working on "behind the scenes" stuff, testing out our streaming/recording equipment, etc. The "real deal" will be X2Go: The Spread 2022, which is also scheduled for the evening hours, but will take place from 2022-12-12 to 2022-12-16 (with a possible extension to one of the weekends before or after - we'll see). This is where we'll also have the annual orca e.V. meeting. The date and time for the orca e.V. meeting is fixed: 2022-12-16, 20:00 CET/MEZ. This is the event where we'll see/hear a talk each evening, and work on getting our releases out. Copy/Paste Xubuntu 18 and block inicial session

Good morning people, I'm using X2go Server Client in my company. I'm exporting via ssh a simple application compiled in flagship 8. The export is ok, but if I open a screen and try to copy and paste the text, it doesn't work. This issue is only affecting xubuntu 18.04.05 The same server with client on windows or xubuntu 22.04 does not have the problem. Any tips to resolve this? Another thing, when opening x2goclient on windows or linux, we have several accesses configured all with custom command. Would it be possible to block this screen, so that the user cannot change the command? Sometimes the simple scroll of the mouse scrool ends up changing the configuration.

Sound forwarding between linux server and linux client

Hi all, I try to setup a remote desktop using x2go with a headless Linux VM as a server (Centos 8 Stream) and Linux desktop (Fedora 35) as a client. I have successfully set up generic desktop sharing and now fighting with sound forwarding. I have ticked 'Enable sound support' and chose 'Pulseaudio' at X2Go client (native X2Go v.4.1.2.2 QT client). I've configured the PulseAudio natie tcp module on both sides. However, I see only 'Dummy' sound device at remote end, and no sound at the client side. Can anyone help with suggestions, how to troubleshoot this setup? -- Best regards, Leonid.

Upcoming X2Go and orca e.V. sponsorship drive

Dear $ALL, As you might know, a few years ago, at "X2Go: The Gathering 2017", several key members of X2Go as well as members from other Remote Desktop-/Remote Application projects joined together to form the Open Remote Computing Association - orca e.V. - a registered association under Germanys Civil Code and also registered as a charitable organization, similar to a 501(c)(3) organization in the US. This June, we joined betterplace.org for easier handling of donations. They offer PayPal, SEPA Direct Debit, Credit Card, giropay/paydirekt and Wire transfer. And they also handle issuing donation receipts for us. (Note that while donations towards orca/X2Go are tax-deductible for German tax subjects, this may vary in other jurisdictions.) The Commercial and Savings Bank Ulm, where orca's bank account resides, is planning a sponsorship drive for all charitable organizations registered with them via betterplace.org, starting Monday, 2022-10-24, 09:00 CEST and ending Friday, 2022-10-28, 23:59 CEST - so that's this week. They have pooled 17 500 EUR and will distribute them across all charitable orgs registered with them that receive donations. So it's not a 1:1 matching of each donation, but the org with the biggest amount of donations gets the biggest piece of the cake, so to speak. I am facing a strange error while trying to install x2goclient from AUR: 0001-Fix-redefinition-compile-error.patch ... FAILED ==> ERROR: One or more files did not pass the validity check! What could be causing this? V.

X2Go no longer works in 22.04, black screen

X2Go with MATE desktop used to work fine, I've been using it for years, but after upgrading to 22.04 a few months ago, it is broken and I don't know how to fix it. If I try to connect with MATE (from Windows X2Go client), it shows a "New session started" popup, shows a blank window briefly, then closes.
