Hi, I try to test and install x2goserver described on http://wiki.x2go.org/installing_x2goserver_debian When I try to install the database with the scriptx2gocreatebase.shit seems not to be included The only script I found under/usr/lib/x2go/script isx2godbadmin Do I miss something ? Need to get 0 B of archives. After unpacking 0 B will be used. PyHoca GUI error

Hello, I am trying to connect using the PyHoca GUI running on Ubuntu. I am able to make the connection to the x2go server, however it will not bring up the display. It is using the same .x2go session as I use in the standard x2go Linux client which gets me into my desktop on the x2go server no problem. But when I use the PyHoca client, I get a continuous failure in the /var/log/auth.log: Apr 19 11:29:24 ubuntu-tcs1 sudo: nwhunt : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/home/local/VSTI/nwhunt ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/x2gopgwrapper listsessions ubuntu-tcs1 Just displays over and over again every couple seconds. I am using PyHoca 0.41 (looking forward to 0.42 to try with Ubuntu Unity) Neil

Hi, I currently have a client using x2go for remotely accessing a debian server. I have played with this for a while and commend all your efforts on such a better remote desktop client for low bandwidth! after serveral attempts I have not been able to find out why the following problems happen and wondered if anyone has an ideas. 1) I cant use multi-window. they use a gnome desktop.. could that be the problem? 2) occasionaly the session crashes. 3) every know and again 1 in for computers slow's right down, and doesnt speed back up. thats why I was considering multi-window, so I can work out which app slowed the server/client down. X2go with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty

Has anyone had success with this? I downloaded the beta version and it wouldn't display. Since it's not using GNOME but rather Unity, is it expected to be compatible? There are definitely some features in Natty I'd like to start using. Please let me know if you have any tips, or if I can help with any testing. Neil

Hi Mike, My usecases are: 1) I am working on computer A. Then I change room and want to continue working from computer B on the desktop of computer A. So that would be your case (a). 2) I am working on computer A. I want to show some results on my screen to my colleague in the U.S. or in the next cubical, in any case in the same network. I think that would be exactly your case (b). Summarized you described exactly my usecases. Now the interesting question: How can I do that? Did I overlook something in the Wiki or is there another documentation? Thank you for your patience. Having tried X2go, I get always a "new" desktop when I logon with the client to the machine on which the server is installed. Sorry for asking this question if this is written in the documentation. On each incoming print job it has to wake up and take over the task of processing the print job. 10x printing speed increase for x2go printing

Hello, all. We have been doing battle with major printing issues in X2Go. The two most serious are regularly disappearing print jobs on all platforms and print speed and quality when printing from Windows rdesktop sessions. I do not believe these issues are related to our hacking the x2go printing code to allow a single CUPS print server to service an unlimited number of x2go servers (which we posted around a year ago and need to repost to the wiki). Phil has patched the x2goprint script to fix the disappearing print job problem and will be posting those patches to the dev list shortly. As I believe many do, we use X2Go as a "middleware" for users using remote Windows desktop sessions because that is much faster than directly running RDP on low bandwidth links. The X2Go printers are configured as printers within the Windows desktops. We found we needed to use RAW print queues to do this lest the double pass through the PPD file override some of the user requested formatting (e.g., landscape jobs printing in the default portrait mode). The recommended Windows driver seemed to be the Generic -> Windows Imagesetter driver. However, we received complaints of very slow printing and enormous print jobs which took forever not only to print but just to transmit across the WAN link. The print quality was also seriously degraded (fuzzy to use the users' description). We were able to achieve roughly ten times better performance and dramatically improve quality by switching the Windows driver from Windows ImageSetter to PDFCreator. More details are below. Here are some specifics from our trouble ticket system regarding the ImageSetter print job size: "The user generated a report in Timberline, saved it to PDF, and emailed it. It is 10 pages. I saved it as MamOrig.pdf: 19439 Mar 29 18:24 MamOrig.pdf She then printed one page and sent it to her WinLocalPrinters. When it popped up on her physical desktop, I had her save the file and email it to me. I saved it as MamX2GoOnce.pdf: 402170 Mar 29 18:25 MamX2GoOnce.pdf Note that a single page is 20 times the size of the original 10 page document." We changed the driver to PDFCreator (www.pdfforge.org) and saw almost a tenfold reduction in print times. Here are some hard measures from the trouble ticket: "I did some benchmarks on the changes using the 10 page report the user sent: ImageSetter driver: 3 minutes to start printing, 11 minutes to print all 10 pages PDFCreator driver: 30 seconds to start printing, 1 minute 40 seconds to print all 10 pages" >From another entry: "I printed it using ImageSetter and it took me almost 9 minutes to print. However, when I printed it with PDFCreator, it took just over 1 minutes including the time to send to my local desktop, open in acroread, and print from acroread." So far, we have not encountered any problems from switching to PDFCreator.

pulseaudio on X2go thin clients

Hi all, just a short question... Does the x2goclient on a Linux X2go thin client start a local pulseaudio process (daemon) in the background? Or does the x2gothinclient script bundle thingy have to start a pulseaudio daemon somewhere within its script. My current experience makes me think that there is no pulseaudio daemon started on the thin client. Any hints? This set of brilliant ideas is still not in public and it will be scattered over the internet (in newsgroups archives etc.) or even lost if we do not take our time to bundle this valuable knowledge. Über Foren habe ich einen Bugreport gefunden, daß selbstsignierte Zertifikate Probleme machen würden. Allerdings habe ich noch keinen Workaround gefunden, das betraf ofenbar auch nur eine ältere Ubuntu-Version. Mein nächster Schritt ist, einen LDAP-Install mit Hand zu probieren, erstmal ohne Zertifikate. Hat jemand von Euch sowas? Ich brauche die LDAP-Funktionalität und bin gerade ein bißchen ins Kalte Wasser geworfen. Vielen Dank, Mike Thomas

X2go client on debian ARM?

Hey there. I have recently invested in some HP T5325 thin clients, wishing to make them work with a linux terminal server. Since they canot PXE boot, and HP wont tell me what chipset they use, LTSP is out of the question. That laves me with either XDMCP, wich dosnt support local USB pens, or X2go, wich isnt packaged for arm. How much work would go into porting the client software to debian ARM? Since more and more thin clients are getting ARM processors, porting x2goclient to ARM might not be the worst idea in the universe

I downloaded a copy of the source by using this command: git clone git:// code.x2go.org/x2goserver.git I want to try to make a module on NodeJS, and I had assumed that I would get a bunch of source files written in C or C++, but what I got was a bunch of Perl scripts. Is that all the server is? Am I missing something? My goal is to make an NX server that can run over a simple TCP or HTTP server and I was going to write a client for display in the browser. From my research, X2Go is supposed to be the most fully featured, open source NX implementation out there. I downloaded the source from NoMachine.com for part of their server and it was as I expected, a bunch of C and C++ sources. With NodeJS, I have a couple of options: - Include a C++ module by exporting certain functions - Write the source in server-side JavaScript - Use the exec command to execute scripts on the command-line If the server really is that simple, then my project will be a lot less painful and will take me a lot less time than expected to make work with NodeJS. If the server really is this simple, how does it compare performance-wise with the open source version from NoMachine? I want to possibly have several NX servers piped through a single webserver where each NX server is running in it's own VM, so efficiency is what I'm after. I am primarily looking at just running this on Ubuntu, so this package looked like it was the right one (debian). Any help that any of you could offer would be much appreciated. I'm excited to start playing with this software!! Don't worry, anything I produce will be Open Source, regardless of whether I do a complete rewrite.

X2Go client printing issues if application queries printer parameters

Hello, all. We are working on a problem for one of our clients where print margins are not being set properly on a critical financial application, Timberline. To save retyping, I'll paste in most of the contents of our internal GLPI Help Desk (http://www.glpi-project.org/spip.php?lang=en) ticket: One of Maryann's critical functions is printing checks. If they print incorrectly, it is extra critical because of the difficulty of reprinting them. Maryann eventually figured out that she needed to override the margin settings of 0,0,0,0 to 0.25,0.25,0,0 to have them print correctly. However, these defaults were never saved and had to be re-entered for every check run. That's a problem and prone to human error. The call with Timberline was enlightening and may reveal a system design issue. Unlike reports, check runs do not have custom printer settings. They draw their margin settings from the physical print device. They can be overridden which is what Maryann has been doing but there are no settings to save; they always draw from the print device. As much as this is working against Maryann, it is probably good design. It means that the checks will adapt to whichever printer they are sent. The problem is when a check run is sent to the X2Go printer for printing to local printers. Now the problem is that two very well designed "features" interfere with each other and become a problem. Timberline is trying to adapt to whichever printer is chosen. However, the X2Go printer is also trying to adapt to whichever printer is chosen to give users the flexibility to print to whichever local printer happens to be attached. The problem is that, to do this, the X2Go print driver does not specify any margins (or it specifies them as 0,0,0,0) as it is physical printer independent. Now the Timberline check printer queries the X2Go printer to ask what its margins are (so Timberline can adapt to the printer) and the X2Go printer says, "I don't have any because I'm trying to adapt to whatever printer the user connects to me!" This is why the check runs work perfectly when sent to the network attached printers - they tell Timberline what their physical margins are. I can see two ways to solve this problem. Each with distinct advantages and disadvantages. The way I think is best is to leave the X2Go printer undefined. The user receives the PDf file and, when printing, after selecting the target printer should select "fit to printable area" in the PDF reader print dialog. This preserves the ability of the X2Go printer to adapt to any printer the user has, e.g., if Maryann decides she needs to print from home rather than from the office. The BIG downside is that is still an extra step and, if Maryann forgets to do it, a check run can be mangled and we have the problem of reprinting checks. [Note - this is a Windows client user and thus cannot print directly to the printer from the X2Go printer dialog] The other solution is to hack the PPD file for Maryann's X2Go printer and set fixed margins. I'm not 100% sure how to do that but we can figure out how. The big advantage is that no user intervention is needed for the check runs. However, the big disadvantage is that we no longer adapt to the target printer; the margins are fixed.
