Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for the great thing that X2Go has become. I use it on a daily basis on several systems and could not think how I would work anymore without it. It provides a functionality that I have looked for so many years, but could never find. I always thought that a Linux server would be perfect to be used as a terminal server, but was always amazed and confused at the total lack of any application that provided this functionality. Then, Windows RDP came along and I did not understand how Linux with X and that network-ability of it failed to provide something similar. And finally, we got it! I hope that X2Go will find it's way into all Linux Distros. I wish there was a CentOS and RedHat package so I could load it onto each customers machine that I have to support, instead of having to use sucky VNC or putty or be limited to using a remote shell, instead of the rich GUI experience that KDE and Gnome can offer. Few questions with Windows client

Hi all, I'm currently running the Windows build 3.99.1.0 client on my work laptop to access a KUbuntu 11.10 VM at home running server version 3.1.0.1. I have two questions that have me scratching my head... 1) With the Windows client, when my KDE session starts up, the default launcher at the bottom of the session's window is not displayed, as if the Windows client is reporting a taller session pixel height than it should be. As soon as I perform a session window resize (even dragging any window dimension out and back by one pixel) redraws the session into the proper window size. This behavior does not seem to happen on the Linux x2go client. 2) More interestingly, I have Pulseaudio set to SSH tunnel, for the random time where I want audio playing over from my VM. Depending on the phase of the moon, I will hear the first tenth of a second of the KDE startup music, then nothing. Same with a song played in Amarok. Looking into the audio settings, the remote Pulseaudio server seems to drop off the valid devices list. I imagine Pulseaudio has lost the connection with the remote server on the Windows client. I don't know if it's a tunneling issue or not. Obviously everything works perfectly fine if there are no firewalls involved (e.g. I have my laptop at home, accessing the home VM locally). Any ideas, or pointers on what to debug where to provide more info? Thanks! --Scott

A couple odds and ends questions

Hi All: A couple of odds and ends questions about which we're hoping to get some help/clarification: 1) Stored Session Data x2go seems to store a fair amount of session data on both the server and the client in the .x2go folder on both. While these are not large folders, is there a concern that they will mount up over time? Are they limited to a specific number of folders and don't grow beyond that? Is this a "not to worry" sort of thing? 2) Restart Client Session from the Server Is it possible to kill and/or restart a specific client session from the server, presumably from the admin account on the server (we understand that this can be done from the client side)? 3) Force Use of Passwords Is there a way in x2go to force use of log in passwords? We're not sure this is a good idea (or maybe one that has some pluses and some minuses), but can it be accomplished? The only way we've found so far is to encrypt the users /home directory, cancel when the connection fails, and then connect when presented with the x2go screen (usually shown after you log out) that allows us to enter a password. Setting Number of Allowed Connections Per User Account

Hi All: We're hoping to set and enable the number of allowed connections/sessions by user and user group in x2go. E.g., we want to limit a user to one session/connection/display at a time: that means from client machine A, if the user A is connected, a connection to his/her account could not be established from client machine B or a second connection couldn't be established from client Machine A. User A, if s/he had second account on the server, however, could start one and only one connection to that second account while running one and only one session to the first account. We think we've seen some posts to this effect involving editing /etc/x2go/x2goserver.conf and /usr/bin/x2gosessionlimit (see http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel/954) We've tried making some of the following types of edits: A) If we edit x2goserver.conf alone, and set either "UserA=1 and/or "UserGroupA=1", we can make multiple connections. When we start another instance of x2go, it shows there is a current session, and when we select "New" in the GUI, a second concurrent session begins. B) If we edit /usr/bin/x2gosessionlimit, and make the following changes and then do a "service x2goserver restart" (not sure if this restart is appropriate or necessary)... Add these lines: if($strlimit <= $scount) { print "LIMIT\n"; exit 0; } Comment out these lines: if($maxlimit <= $scount) { print "$maxlimit\n"; exit 0; } print "$maxlimit\n"; ....and change settings in x2goserver.conf, we got some inconstant results we haven't been able to duplicate, but were along the lines either of a "session limit being exceeded" message even if we had group and/or user limits set to 1 (i.e., we were unable to connect at all), or back to any number of sessions we wanted to start. Can someone suggest a procedure/example of how to do this successfully? Ideally, we'd like the flexibility to limit # of connections/sessions both by user group and individual user. Thanks, Ted

Flash Problems

Hi All: We're having trouble using Flash with x2go on an Ubuntu Server (10.4 - 64bit). What is puzzling is Flash used to work pretty well (still a bit of skipped frames but better than RDP) and we can't figure out why it no longer does. As a test, we built out a new server instance and got the same results. X2go connects just fine, and we can start firefox and surf, but as soon as we go to YouTube the videos start then pretty much freeze up and show a new frame very infrequently. I.e., pretty much unusable. We've seen a couple of posts on the x2go but have missed a solution (apologize if it's there and we just missed it). We've tried various install approaches (from the command line, from "Software Center") but none fix the issue. Any suggestions? Have others had this problem and come on to a solution? Should we try 32bit flash even though we are using a 64bit server instance? Thank you - Ted

X2Go client - multiple sessions?

I'm using the X2Go client build 3.99.1.1 on a Windows 7 x64 system. I can connect to individual servers just fine but when I try to run simultaneous client sessions the first session stops receiving data and eventually disconnects. Is this a known limitation of the x2go client? Is there some trick to getting multiple sessions working correctly? Regards, Shelby Cain

thinclient image and automounting usb-devices

Hi all, we plan to set up an x2go-server in a school, where people should have access to with laptops throught wlan. The laptops will have dual-boot systems an one of them should be a minimal setup with x2goclient (thinclient-image) and wlan access. It would be nice doing usb-automounting in the image - like the ltsp-thinclient environment does. They should behave thin-client like - only that they can't boot through pxe because of wlan. (For the desktops we still use ltsp - because of features like local apps and automounging ...) So users should not have to open a desktop-environment, starting x2goclient and mount local devices manualy. Are there any common approaches? Is automounting working in the tce of x2go? x2go + chroot

Hi, I need instructions for how to setup a chroot environment on the server - I found this old discussion: http://www.mail-archive.com/x2go-dev@lists.berlios.de/msg01268.html but there is no solution, unfortunately. Also, I found http://www.x2go.org/doku.php/wiki:components:tce but this seems to be a tool for setting up chroot on the CLIENT side? Seems to be a different use case. What I want: I would like to chroot users that logged into the server via x2go client to see only files in their home directory (or inside their "jail") - what is the recommended + most efficient way of doing this with the least administrative overhead? - mind the updates! - so recompiling jail binaries after every update of relevant software should happen automatically, most preferable solution would be: apt-get install x2go-server-chroot x2go-create-chroot /home/user without any needed (or minimal) additional interaction after future updates so that your jail is always uptodate after an apt-get update. does this exist? if not, how to create it?
