John Are you sure there's nothing wacky going on with your Windows systems? I have been following your posts to the SPICE alias and maybe my memory is foggy but weren't you having some of the delays etc with SPICE as well when running the client? Hello, all. Internally, we are almost exclusively a Linux desktop shop and our experiences with X2Go are simply amazing. We architected a very powerful back end and the applications just explode on the screen even though all of them are across WAN connections. The X2Go performance is generally much better than our local systems. However, most of our initial clients are Windows users (for the X2Go client) and they are continually complaining about bad performance to the point we have stopped major new rollouts. We bit the bullet and installed Windows on our local systems and . . . they are right. The Windows client performance is much worse. I'll outline what I have seen but I have seen it consistently in 3.0.1-4, 3.0.1.18 with Xming, and 3.0.1.18 with vcxsrv. I also tried Pyhoca (0.7) but it kept mangling my authentication so I cannot report on it. There are two different types of problems. The first is generally laggard response. Typing, screen refreshes, scrolling - everything is generally slower. I would guess this is simply because we must shim a local X server between NX and GDI and it may simply be the way life is. I was hoping it would not be so noticeable. The second problem is far worse, however. It seems that sometimes screen painting of the active application stalls. Again, we've seen this on all three platforms described above. We most often see this in Iceweasel (we are using Debian X2Go Servers). Users will have multiple tabs open and will switch from one or the other or from one widget in an Ajax application to another and nothing happens for literally a minute or two. They can switch to other applications and work there so this is not simply packet loss on the line. The application itself does not update the screen. After a minute or two, everything they typed or the results or their mouse clicks all appear. This is the killer issue right along with the disappearing mouse. We cannot have our users wait for a minute or two every few minutes while they are working on their applications. Again, they can move to a different application and work but their previously active application, usually Iceweasel, just pauses and then catches all events up a minute or so later. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and fix this? Thanks - John

My current test environment is 32 bit Windows XP. We have another user testing 64 bit Windows 7. Most of the complaining users are 32 bit Windows XP. The disappearing mouse pointer is an Xming bug. Moving to vcxsrv will solve that. I think 3.0.1.14 was the first to support that but I'm not sure. We are also using an old X2Go Server - 3.0.1-5 I believe. Thanks - John

DRI role in x2go

Hi Im trying to understand how DRI works with a linux server display device and x2go. Id like to get opengl rendering completely in software on an Ubuntu server and so far so good - ive installed libgl1-mesa-swx11 which in Ubuntu auto removes libgl1-mesa-glx, and 'glxgears' and 'glmark' run nicely through x2go, considering the HW limitations. For some more complicated applications inc wine im running into openGL errors and im curious if any part of the server's X is still trying to direct render anything? I read somewhere that in the xorg.conf I can locate the device and set "NoAccel" to true which disables DRI and forces ARB shaders or something. Would this be worthwhile? thanks Shanon

The next release (and also the code in X2go Git) contains a Makefile that you can use with make && make install so that x2goclient gets installed to /usr/local/bin. Two options: (a) wait for Wednesday/Thursday, then I will patch code from Alex into the current Git code and after that x2goclient will be releases as 3.0.99.0 (as tarball). x2go und gpg-agent - no decryption of emails via kmail possible

Hi all, using x2goclient 3.0.99 on debian squeeze (client and server) together with kmail I run into a problem decrypting emails via gnupg. Unlike as with a Xserver-Session there seems not to be a startscript for gpg- agent in x2goserver. But if I start gpg-agent by hand using command "gpg-agent --daemon" still kmail can't decrypt emails. Starting the gpg-agent with the same command on a xsession initiated with "X -query SERVER" it works. One possible reason I guess in wrong environment variables for $DISPLAY - so the pinentry-qt4 gui (or any other pinentry-gui) could not start. So kmail ends up in "wrong passphrase". This problem allready went up in x2go on debian lenny. But the old kmail on lenny brought it's own frontend for decrypting mails without gpg-agent as a fallback - so it was at least possible to read encrypted emails - even if you had to submit your passphrase on every email again (because it's only remembered through gpg-agent). Building X2GoClient from source

Hello, all. I must be tired, brain-cramping, or clueless. I'm trying to put x2goclient onto a Fedora 15 installation. I compiled nxproxy and nxcomp fine once I figured out the dependencies and symlinked nxcomp-version to nxcomp so nxproxy could fine NX.h. But I then downloaded the x2goclient 3.0.1.18 tarball. I did not see a configure file, a make script, or any templates. I did notice several project files so I downloaded kdevelop to open the project files. I've not used Kdevelop4 before (dinosaur that I am). It only wanted to open the x2goclient-libssh.kdev4 project file. However, it cannot build it and there is nothing to create the configure/make files. How does one build this x2goclient from source? Thanks - John

Hallo, leider reichen meine Englischkenntnisse nicht aus um den nachfolgend beschriebenen Fehler in Englisch zu beschreiben. Da jedoch, wie ich weiß, ein Großteil der Entwickler von X2GO aus Deutschland kommt, hoffe ich, dass mir trotzdem geholfen werden kann. Dafür möchte ich mich bereits im Voraus bedanken. Jetzt zum Grund meine Anfrage. Wir nutzen schon seit einiger Zeit X2GO und sind damit sehr zufrieden. Alles hat bisher sehr gut und problemlos funktioniert. Das hat sich jedoch leider geändert. Fehlerbeschreibung: Heute habe ich damit begonnen unsere Testserver von der "alten" x2go-Server Version (3.0.1-5) auf die neue Version (3.0.99.5-0~49~lucid1) umzustellen. Hierzu habe zunächst die alte Version gelöscht (purge) und dann die neue Version, wie im Wiki beschrieben, installiert. Beim Test des Servers habe ich dann folgenden Fehler festgestellt: Wird sich auf dem x2go-Server mittels x2go-Client angemeldet, eine Applikation wie z. B. Libreoffice gestartet und dort dann ein Zeichen unter Verwendung der <Alt Gr>-Taste wie z. b. | oder @ eingegeben, so ist ab diesem Zeitpunkt keine "normale" Texteingabe mehr möglich. Auf dem Bildschirm sind jetzt bei jedem Tastendruck nur noch "Hieroglyphen" zu sehen (Screenshots kann ich bei Bedarf gerne übersenden). Einzige Abhilfe schafft eine Ab-/Neuanmeldung am x2go-Server. Das beschriebene Procedere habe ich an mehreren x2go-Clients (Ubuntu 10.04 und 11.04) und mehreren Servern (Ubuntu 10.04 und 11.04) getestet. Der Fehler ist unabhängig von der x2go-Client Version (getestet mit Vers.3.01-5, 3.0.1.18-0~56~lucid, 3.0.1.18-0~56~natty), tritt aber nur bei der Serverversion 3.0.99.5-0~49 (lucid u. natty) auf. Die Tests habe ich an neu aufgesetzten Maschinen und an "upgedateten" Rechnern durchgeführt. Das Ergebnis ist immer das gleiche.
