X2Go: The Spread 2023 - You (K)Drive Me Krazy! 2023-12-11 to 2023-12-10

Dear $ALL, In exactly one month, from December 11th to December 15th, we'll have our annual X2Go meeting for users, admins and code contributors to X2Go - once again, 100% virtual/online, so it's a "The Spread" and not a "The Gathering" once more. We're hoping to see you there. We'll post a link to a virtual meeting room in due time, and expect to be streaming/recording the event to YouTube or a similar platform as well. Starting time will likely be 20:00 CET, as last year, unless a significant number of participants requests an earlier start time (say, 18:00 CET or 19:00 CET) - please let me know (off-list, see below for contact details) if you'd like to request an earlier start time. Sadly, in summer, where Covid numbers and weather conditions would have allowed for a real-life meeting, we had a scheduling conflict. And as the numbers are rising again, we cannot in good conscience host a real-life international conference - especially as some of our members have vulnerable household members or are vulnerable persons themselves. At the moment, three topics are confirmed: - The usual "X2Go: State of the Union" opening speech - A report looking back at our latest stable X2Go release, which brought KDrive into the stable repository, and showing what still needs to be done Re: KDrive. - A report on how we used betterplace.org for collecting X2Go-related donations in the last 18 months, and an open discussion on how we could improve our usage of this platform. I am also hoping for a certain volunteer to commit to a fourth presentation regarding the latest changes and improvements in NX-Libs - since Arctica/NX-Libs pushed out a new release as well (on which our X2Go release is also based, obviously). This means we will have at least one more open talk slot - possibly more, if the two release reports for NX-Libs and X2Go only take 10-15 minutes each. If nobody volunteers, I might fill that remaining slot with a quick demo of how to netboot X2Go-TCE-Live via iPXE in EFI and legacy mode. But I'm really hoping for more volunteers for talks/demos/presentations - so if you would like to present something X2Go/NX-Libs/Arctica-related, please let me know (again, off-list, see below for contact details). We also have the option to prerecord your talk, in case your schedule doesn't allow for a live presentation and/or your internet connection is too flaky. It would be nice if you're available for a live Q&A round after your talk, though (via text-only chat or audio-only stream is fine). Please note that this time, the orca e.V. annual meeting will take place on the Sunday morning *before* the start of X2Go: The Spread 2023. Next Events/Upcoming X2Go and orca e.V. Sponsorship Drive - Tomorrow, 2023-09-05

Dear $ALL, X2Go will be present at LinuxDay.AT <https://www.linuxday.at/> in Dornbirn, Austria on Saturday, September 30th, and also at the IT-Kongress <https://it-kongress.com/> in Neu-Ulm, Germany, on Thursday, November 9th, 2023. At both events, we will have a booth where we will demo X2Go-KDrive, as well as the HTML5Client beta and X2Go's integration into the latest Remmina client. At LinuxDay.AT, there will also be a talk with a live demo of how you can run a small X2GoServer instance in the Google Cloud, for free, using Tor (The Onion Router) to log in. The talk at IT-Kongress will be a behind-the-scenes look regarding the customer-driven development that led to the creation of X2Go-KDrive. (Note that both talks will be in German, but our booth staff at both events is fluent in German as well as in English.) At TUEBIX, we will demo X2Go-KDrive, at Hack4Glarus, we will take a closer look at how well (or how bad) X2Go works in an IPv6 network. The X2Go Project Could Use Your Help!

Hi $ALL, As Covid-19 restrictions are lifted all over the place, more and more events are taking place in real life again. Which means X2Go needs volunteers, equipment, and supplies for booths at such events. While we can't "buy" volunteers, we can do so for equipment and supplies - given sufficient funding. Dear $ALL, As you might know, a few years ago, at "X2Go: The Gathering 2017", several key members of X2Go as well as members from other Remote Desktop-/Remote Application projects joined together to form the Open Remote Computing Association - orca e.V. - a registered association under Germanys Civil Code and also registered as a charitable organization, similar to a 501(c)(3) organization in the US. In June 2022, we joined betterplace.org for easier handling of donations. They offer PayPal, SEPA Direct Debit, Credit Card, giropay/paydirekt and Wire transfer. And they also handle issuing donation receipts for us. (Note that while donations towards orca/X2Go are tax-deductible for German tax subjects, this may vary in other jurisdictions.) HELP WANTED: LinuxDays Chemnitz 2023-03-11/2023-03-11 - X2Go could use additional booth volunteers

Dear $ALL, A lot of real-life events had to be cancelled in 2020-2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some became online or hybrid events. In September 2022, LinuxDay.AT was the first to dare to return to a real-life event format. Now, LinuxDays Chemnitz is following suit: Their event takes place on the weekend of March 11th/March 12, 2023, in their pre-pandemic location, the Campus Reichenhainer Street of the Technical University Chemnitz. We have been able to secure a booth there, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, we are a bit shorter on booth staff than originally planned. So if anyone is planning to attend anyways, or at least considering to attend, please reply to this message (off-list, see Reply-To header). No promises, but we might be able to get you a free ticket in exchange for volunteering at our booth (this depends on the CLT folks' goodwill, as we're past the sign-up date). Also, we'll see if we can pick you up/drop you off somewhere along the route and see if we can get a room reserved for you as well. Again, no promises, as this is all very last minute and not going as expected, but we'll do our best. Note: There is no official mask mandate at the venue, but wearing a mask is strongly recommended. Assuming pre-pandemic attendance rates, you can expect 3600 visitors passing the booths in 2 days (opening hours are 8am-6pm on Saturday and 9am-6pm on Sunday). That is A. LOT. Which means the infection risk is way higher than on, say, public transport during a morning commute. Two Upcoming X2Go Events: X2Go: The Spread 2021.5 and 2022

Hi $ALL, It's been a while, but now it is time for not only one, but two X2Go Events. As you all know, the Covid-19 pandemic kept us from hosting our usual X2Go: The Gathering events in 2021 and 2022. So instead of gathering, we'll now spread out. Instead of meeting for a weekend in "meatspace", like we used to, we'll now meet online during the work week starting 18:00 CET/MEZ each day (or possibly even later, given volunteer feedback), and only for a few hours each day. X2Go: The Spread 2021.5 (2022-11-28 to 2022-12-02) is the replacement event for X2Go: The Gathering 2021, which had to be cancelled due to illness of several core members. This event starts in a little less than a week - but if you can't make it on such short notice, do not worry. X2Go: The Spread 2021.5 will be more of an informal virtual meetup, with people working on "behind the scenes" stuff, testing out our streaming/recording equipment, etc. The "real deal" will be X2Go: The Spread 2022, which is also scheduled for the evening hours, but will take place from 2022-12-12 to 2022-12-16 (with a possible extension to one of the weekends before or after - we'll see). This is where we'll also have the annual orca e.V. meeting. The date and time for the orca e.V. meeting is fixed: 2022-12-16, 20:00 CET/MEZ. This is the event where we'll see/hear a talk each evening, and work on getting our releases out.
