X2Go: The Gathering - The Aftermath

Hi everyone, I would like to thank every participant of X2Go: The Gathering 2015 for coming, and for doing their part in making it a wonderful experience. It seems that the 40 minutes of talk/20 minutes break schedule worked rather well, we only had two talks that were delayed - one for technical reasons, the other because two participants needed to leave early. So I suggest we stick with that for the next gathering. However, I am thinking we might want to offer shorter talk slots as well. Maybe 20 minutes of talk/10 minutes break? We only had two of those this time. What worries me is that with all those 40 minute talks, we took a lot of time away from the coding/bugsquashing part, as well as from the socializing. So maybe more 20 minute talks next time, without increasing the number of talks? Also, I am unsure if we should have talks on Sunday at all, or if we should pack all the talks into the Saturday slots, leaving Sunday entirely for coding/bugsquashing/socializing (maybe sitting outside in the park, chatting, after a long breakfast)? At 2014's Gathering, people seemed to really like and enjoy Unperfekthaus, our Saturday dinner location. This year, it seems people weren't too interested and mainly went there for dinner. So I'm wondering - should we drop the Unperfekthaus from next year's schedule, and stay at the hotel for the entire time? As the other community proved, bad weather is no reason not to have a BBQ. ;-) Staying at the hotel would again leave more time for coding/debugging/socializing, as we don't spend 40-60 minutes on the road going to UpH and back, and everyone has access to their personal equipment (laptops, tablets, ...) all the time. Japsand Maintenance Aftermath a.k.a. "Lessons Learned"

Hi Due to a hanging rm process, we had to restart the server today. After rebooting the machine, it was decided to also update the system to the latest packages version, but still staying on Debian Wheezy (for now.) The server is using a custom kernel module provided by Realtek for its RTL8168 ethernet NIC. An in-kernel driver is available, but proved to be too unreliable, leading to frequent network outages and even machine crashes whenever the network IO load was higher than a few hundred KB/s. The hosting provider has a wiki entry for this issue at this location: http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Installation_des_r8168-Treibers/en Unfortunately, the current driver version as provided by Realtek, 8.040, seems to be incompatible with the old 3.2.0-4-amd64 (3.2.68-1+deb7u2) kernel provided by Debian. As of writing this, I do not know what happened exactly, but most likely the module caused a kernel panic during bootup. Reverting to an older version, 8.037, fixed this issue and let the server boot up correctly again. For future maintenance work, please use this older version, at least on Debian Wheezy. I put the module source code into /usr/src and created a symlink from /usr/src/r8168-current to /usr/src/r8168-8.037.00. --- Other updated packages include Java (version 7 co-installed, the "alternatives" symlink now point to version 7 instead of 6) and Jenkins, including its plugins. A test build run suggests the Jenkins update was successful. Mihai

reprepro refused nightly builds for Debian

Hi Mihai, I just checked the availability of the latest nx-libs packages for Debian and realized that they did not make it into the archive. Last uploaded packages dated back 06/20/2015. When checking on packages.x2go.org (aka ymir), I found the below: """ x2go-admin@ymir:~$ REPREPRO_BASE_DIR=/srv/sites/x2go.org/packages/debian reprepro processincoming x2go-debian-jessie The lock file '/srv/sites/x2go.org/packages/debian/db/lockfile' already exists. I have never seen such an issue before (shrug shoulders...). But you maybe want to keep an eye on that from time to time. OpenSSL-Win32 1.0.1m -> 1.0.1o update and downtime on the WinBuilder VM

Setting up a VcXsrv build environment on the WInBuilder VM

Hi guys, I intend to setup a VcXsrv build environment on the WinBuilder VM so that other people can build VcXsrv also. The steps are described here: https://github.com/ArcticaProject/vcxsrv/blob/release/1.17.0.0-x/building.t… Do note that that there is a risk of me breaking the X2Go Client Windows builds, especially because I have to add things to the PATH. If they are broken, I will fix them ASAP. In terms of Visual Studio, I will install Community Edition. It is new and has the same features as Professional, but is free-of-charge for open source development (even at a for-profit company.) I would like to do this work on Thursday or Friday. -Mike#2

Dear all, I am happy to announce that from now on the X2Go package archive that provides Fedora packages of X2Go[1] also offers X2Go packages that have been built against Fedora 22 - the new Fedora release version. We hope this makes our package archive more useful. If you encounter dependency problems when installing X2Go release or nightly packages[2] under Fedora 22, please file a bug against X2Go BTS[3]. Dear all, I am happy to announce that from now on the X2Go package archive that provides Debian packages of X2Go[1] also offers packages of X2Go that have been built against Debian stretch - the new Debian testing version. Additionally, the "symbolic names" - oldstable => wheezy - stable => jessie - testing => stretch have also been updated. We hope this makes our package archive more useful. apt-cacher-ng updated to wheezy-backports version on japsand

Hi Our builds have been running into problems when fetching binary Debian packages lately. Error messages looked like this: E: Failed to fetch http://example.com/debian/pool/main/*/.deb: 500 Connection timeout This seems to have been caused by a known (and subsequently) fixed bug, c.f., https://bugs.debian.org/717832 I decided not to manually apply the patch and rebuild the package, but fetch the fixed version from Debian backports, which we're already using anyway. Hopefully Debian builds will be more stable in the future, at least when fetching packages. (And qemubuilder be the biggest source of problems once again...) Mihai
