For you young whippersnappers ;-) - that was an UUEncoded file. UUEncode was used to transfer binary data in a 7-bit-safe way, before base64 came along. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uuencoding for details. There even was a UUDecoder for DOS that was 7-bit-safe itself, so you could paste it into a e-mail as ASCII "text", then save it as uudecode.com and run it.
