Thanks. I created a bug report, in case it is a real bug. I also included a link to a bug which is a few years old. See here http://bugs.x2go.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1428 and here: https://bugs.x2go.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=227
Now, you wrote Maybe someone has done some cleanup in the .x2go directory or even in the home. I assume you mean the remote ubuntu? Unlikely. Would you suggest reinstalling X2Go Server on that machine? Or what is the most straightforward solution?
Thanks a lot

Surprisingly, without any known changes, we suddenly receive a new error
when establishing previously error free connections. The following error appears in the client, however the connection is established as usual without any problems.
So why does this annoying error message appear and how can it be fixed?
Connection failed. Cannot create remote file
~templatemate3/.x2go/ssh/key.TJ4977 - SCP: Warning: status code 1 received: scp: ~templatemate3/.x2go/ssh: No such file or directory
Thank you!
