X2go-dev mailing list X2go-dev@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/x2go-dev

Why??
You can reach this mailinglist over a forum-interface: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel You can also post messages there.
The only thing what has to be changed is a better link on this forum, people don't know it now.
I don't think it's a good idea to start a new extra forum!
You can read this mailinglist also as a newsgroup and on many other ways, like as a blog or as an RSS feed. See here: http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel

I second that. And I also believe we had that discussion once already.
But I guess decisions have already been made and there is nothing we can do about it. I guess the interface of the link you give is still too geeky, because the emoticons are not substituted by cute graphics and there are no avatars. :(
I just hope that the developers will still be able to at least sometimes respond to messages on this list in the future.
Thanks,
Paul

You can always do something to stop something. The decision was not made in this list. X2go is not a democratic project, but some discussion here is a good idea I think.

In my opinion the problem is that the link to the forum was never on the website.
Here again the link. please put it on the website with "Forum" above it: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel No avatars, but simple and OK.

because the demand is there and because i want to support x2go. this list is great, but something that we advanced users sometimes do not think of is that mailinglists are a barrier for some people. i experience this in my every day life: my trainees just do not use them. so i believe a forum could catch many users who otherwise would contact heinz directly and therefore keep him busy.
not to let any misunderstandings arise: this mailing list is great, solves a lot of problems. but i think a forum could help, too. even with gmane, which i certainly do know and use. i guess we will have to accept that some people are different and therefore use different tools.
it's the same with usenet or irc ... ... ...
all the best,
das.t

Because of that, there is a nice forum-interface: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel Link to it, call it "forum", and it will work fine.
so i believe a forum could catch many users who otherwise would contact heinz directly and therefore keep him busy.
Removing the contact-form wil help a lot ;-) Or call it "consultancy" or "commercial support".

You can reach the list now on many ways. If you would like to make something else, I think it needs to be reachable on many ways too.
Fragmentation is most of the time not a good idea.
A forum needs a subscribtion (or you get spam), that's a big barrier too. And do we need such very unexperienced users at the moment?

There is a forum: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel
You will see this list.
You can also post messages there, but only with a working e-mail address (the first time you need to give a confirmation).
With regards, Paul van der Vlis.

This forum or a hybrid of a mail-list forum is not convenient and the messages are limited in length so its hard to post config files and stuff. A proper forum can let you see how many users are online and reading. Also you can assign people in the forum to help others which makes it more interactive and quick replies. I believe there are loads of users out there and the community can help out giving you the developers the room to do other things than answering common questions. Anyway this is just my opinion and sorry if it offends. Want the best for x2go community.
Tks for reading Eric

Not true, try it: http://post.gmane.org/post.php?group=gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel But maybe there is an interface for typo3 what can do the same.

I don't think so. I never go into forums to give support. And I know many forums with very less good answers.
I believe there are loads of users out there and the community can help out giving you the developers the room to do other things than answering common questions. Anyway this is just my opinion and sorry if it offends. Want the best for x2go community.
I do believe you want the best. But maybe a bit contact about the plans would be good. Here are not only the developers, here are the people who wants help and the people who give help. This is the X2go community.
( In my opinion it would be good to rename the mailinglist from "x2go-dev" into "x2go", to avoid confusion. )
With regards, Paul van der Vlis.
Hello Paul,
Hello x2gousers...
I'll spend my little break to answer some questions which have been asked and I'll comment some really good ideas:
We'll NOT close down the mailing list. Sorry for that I can't change the name any more - this is caused by the administration form of BerliOs. The mailing list is the best thing to communicate with you. Paul had some really good ideas to integrate it even better in our website. I'll do this! The forum of Tobias is something completly different and it will be addressed to beginners and will communicate use cases and so on. After every third question on our booths was about a "forum", I think - if you address beginners directly - this will help them. But again - the list is the most important communication method for us. We already had a forum in the beginning and it was really a lot of work to maintain and a lot of questions were uncommented, because of to many branches you could write in. To get it in one sentence: The list will stay exacly as it is - please go on using it - it is really a good and proofed way for communication - but...
If we can have any influence about who will build a x2go forum (which will be build for sure in my eyes), Tobias would be "our choice". Tobias is part of the linux4afrika team and linux4afrika is a big part of our community.
So I really understand every single argument and I'm glad that this is discussed!
About democracy: with my last mail, I wanted to spend my time to give you again more details about how we are trying to go on with x2go. And I really must say - yes, we should spend more time on communication (and maybe to ask more questions). But sometimes there is still no time left
There was an Bugtracker active inside the BerliOs Site, but nobody used it - in future we'll wan't to integrate it with the git.
Again we wan't to thank all the people in the list to answer questions to user and for having some very good ideas. This comminication helps us in many ways and if you think something is not Ok for you, please place it here. Be sure that we are open minded and some things just need to be learned or can't be realized at once.
best regards...
hi there,
i am sorry for the late reply.
to make one thing clear: i have no intensions at all to substitute this mailing list. all i want is to create an additional offering for those who want it. if you don't want it - don't use it, i cannot see any problem with this.
i will stay here for sure and i very well believe both can exist and complement each other.
no bad blood intended.

»x2go-discuss« would also be an alternative, a lot of projects use. Of course only when you have the time to move the list.
Thanks,
Paul
PS: Sympa [1] is the alternative mailing list manager I was talking about yesterday. Just search for DokuWiki to find information about the integration of Sympa and DokuWiki, for example [2].

In my opinion it would be better to call it "x2go". But if it's much work, I would leave it how it's now and explain on the website that's the list for everything, not only for developping.
