Hi there,
I'd like to re-discuss our registration policy. While I do agree that spam is a problem, at least I refrained from fixing mistakes in wikis several times because the registration was too complicated, or because it took days to get an account and by that time my motivation was gone. Thus I like to suggest to reopen the open user registration. To limit the spam I suggest adding a captcha plus auto-generating the password. I'd be willing to take care of the spam.
Cheers Morty

That is a good point.

If you are willing to help out with user management on the wiki, I
think we can re-think the disabled user registration. The reason for
disabling was that none of us has the time and focus to regularly
check who is new and who is real.
The current version of dokuwiki also offers to mail targets: mails for
every change committed to the wiki and mails for new registrations. So
new registrations can be easily monitored via one's mail account.
@h1: what do you think?

I had to delete a lot of accounts, that were machine generated. Some of them managed to create advertisment pages inside the wiki.
I understand, that it will be frustrating having to wait until somebody takes care about someones registration.
The official "capture" plugin status of "Weatherwax" (our dokuwiki version) is unknown:
https://www.dokuwiki.org/plugin:captcha
Maybe we can talk about this topic again, when a new version of the plugin is released.

Heinz

I did peek at the hooking-code and I don't see any reason why it should not work with the current version of dokuwiki. And even if not, it shouldn't be too difficult to fix that.

Until there is no captcha officially available, I'd say let us stay
with the current registration workflow. I normally am pretty quick
with replies on requests, and if also Morty joins in with wiki
administration, then we are already three.

This is a normal plugin - just like the other plugins installed - and it's unlikely there will ever be an "official" plugin. I assume the author just didn't bother to add the appropriate flag. And as I said: I did look at the code and it's a fail or work thing: Either the hooks work or the they don't. Also there are no comments about the plugin not working, something that normally happens pretty quickly. If you don't want official registration just say so, but please don't bring up meta-arguments....
