For Debian packages, this file could be auto-generated. Not so for tarballs?!?
I have introduced version files for all server-side packages so that
clients can query the server what version of which package is
installed...

For Debian packages, this file could be auto-generated. Not so for tarballs?!?
But the package-build could check whether those numbers fit. And if not throw a warning to fix it. But nothing to worry about.
