Hi list,
in case the problem is really with the DLLs shipped with the Windows client, I can confirm a similar issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 (which is only available as a 64-bit product) and Nomachine's NX client.
What helped there was replacing the files cygwin, cygz, cygpng12 and cygcrypto-0.9.8 with their counterparts from cygwin 1.7.
Maybe this is related?
Kind Regards Stefan

Tried replacing the above files with the latest from Cygwin, no luck. Then tried replacing all relevant files with latest Cygwin versions, still no luck. All tests done with 3.01-18 on Windows 7 x64 SP1 (Swedish language UI).
I've also installed 3.01-18 on Windows Server 2003 x64 SP2, works.
Cheers, Daniel
I've done some more testing, Windows 7 x86 SP1 and 3.01-18 work. Seems like only 64-bit Windows 7 (most likely 2008R2 too) and 3.01-14->18 are not getting along.
I've added a summary to the download page for Windows clients: http://wiki.x2go.org/windows_and_macos_x_binaries. Some combinations aren't verified, please update if incorrect.
Might I also suggest that the outdated client download info on www.x2go.org (http://www.x2go.org/index.php?id=7) is updated with links to the wiki instead.
Cheers, Daniel

Thanks for doing that. I will get a new x2goclient version from Alex
tomorrow and put that into Git. Have you also tried with x2goagent
3.5.0.2 on the server side? It is available in the nightly builds
(heuler area for Debian, ppa:x2go/ppa for Ubuntu). I personally do not
have a clue where this problem comes from...
BTW: you could also try out PyHoca-GUI o Windows and see if that
behaves different from x2goclient.

Thanks, Mike

Since the problems so far seem to be related to the client OS version, I'm guessing that that server side components aren't the issue. I'll try the new client version as soon as it's ready, if the problem persists I'll give x2goagent a shot.

Just did that, PyHoca-GUI works on Windows 7 x64. I had some trouble connecting initially, perhaps there were some leftover processes from previous x2goclient tests, but the last 5 times I've succesfully started/connected/resumed sessions. PyHoca uses a different color depth than x2goclient, "dp17" vs "dp24", I couldn't resume old x2gclient sessions because of that, otherwise they seem interchangeable.

That sounds indeed weird. 17bit color depth is a really uncommon
value. In PyHoca-GUI I try to keep it simple: resume only sessions
that support the same color depth as the local desktop. This can be
fine-tuned still, but this implementation cleared up many problems I
had before.
@Alex: I get the local color depth from win32api.GetSystemMetrics(2).
This 17bit value sounds really odd to me. How does x2goclient choose
its color depth???
@Daniel: You are great! You found the bug. What is your desktop's
,,real'' color depth (right click on desktop, properties, settings of
gcard)? I guess it is something different from 17. Maybe you could be
more playful with local color depth (gcard settings)?

OK, I also installed pyhoca-gui and pyhoca-cli on Debian Squeeze, pyhoca-gui wouldn't resume the suspended 17 bit session, but pyhoca-cli happily resumed it.
I tried starting a new session from Debian pyhoca-gui and that session started in 24 bit color depth.

I have dual screens with extended desktop, both set to True Color (32 bpp). The driver (NVidia) only shows two options, 16 or 32 bpp.

We will drop the home page completely in the near future and make the
wiki our homepage. We will also keep the blog and open up the blog to
more people, so stay tuned. Basically, your are right. This should
have been changed/addressed earlier.
