Hello,
From an announcement list I would expect a low volume list what gives information when a new version arrives or when there are security issues or when there is a congress or something like that.
But the x2go announcement list [1] does completely something else, what I see are many change-messages from git-admin: https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/x2go-announcement/2011-April/thread.html
I think it would be better to change the usage of the announcement list and to make it an informative low volume list.
I think that's wrong, because it's a read-only list.
With regards, Paul van der Vlis.

Further, I see on the page of the list [1] this text:

The purpose of the x2go-announcement list is to announce new versions
of X2go related projects. To automize this we have set up the
individual X2go git projects to post to x2go-announcement whenever a
Git project has been tagged.
Of course, this presumes that a tag equals a release. Probably the
mail body has been beautified and customized for the X2go project, as
well. Currently we use some Git default announcement template.
The high noise on the list is related to all the Git (re-)structuring
that has occurred lately. In the future I expect a far lower volume on
that list.
Any comments on this? Mike

We need an additional git-commit and wiki-changes ML. The announcement should IMO be manually maintained - otherwise the chances of annoying people by accidents is high. But the that is not for me to decide....

The git-commit list is already there: https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/x2go-commits/
My propsal to Heinz earlier was to send the wiki-commits to that ML, too. #
If people prefer posting the git-tags on that ML additionally instead
of using the x2go-announcement ML then I can change that.
Any votes? Heinz?

Wouldn't it be better to remove this "Git default announcement template" and to make postings to the announcement-list by hand?
I would like short announcements, with links to more information (e.g. a changelog). Or better: a little short newsletter.
The information from Git could go into the dev-list.

Hmmm... x2go-dev or x2go-commits (just to re-assure that you are aware
of the x2go-commits ML)?

Hmm no, I did not know about the x2go-commits list. That's even better maybe. So you see, I miss all the good news ;-)
I also didn't know about the new Squeeze repository. Too less time at the moment to follow all discussions on the dev-list...

I agree. My preference is for announcements to have minimal traffic and to be echoed to the user list so that folks who closely follow the project don't need to subscribe to yet another mail list - John

There is still much git-admin-noise on the announcement list.
Who can change that?
I will unsubscribe when it does not change, but I would like a good announcement list!

Yes, it informs you about new tags in X2go Git. A new tag in the X2go
context mostly means that there is a new version of some or other X2go
component. Basically, this information is mostly interesting for X2go
packagers.
A new tag/version also means that this new version will soon be
available in X2go's .deb repositories (Debian/Ubuntu) - this
information might be valuable not only to packagers.
Who can change that?
Me.
I will unsubscribe when it does not change, but I would like a good announcement list!
I see several options here:
o move Git tag annotation announcements to x2go-commits (they might
drown in the flood...)
o x2go-announcement subscribers can filter out mails from git-admin@x2go.org
o ...
I personally will not write extra announcement mails after having
tagged a new version in Git. This extra-effort can be avoided by
automatic mailing.
If people on x2go-dev vote for moving Git tag annotation announcements
to x2go-commits (we already had a discussion that did not end about
this), I will re-configure the different Git projects ASAP.

Hi list members,
as there are again a lot of complaints about the traffic on the announcement list, I would suggest to move messages not generated by human to another list.
All complaints share that they want this group as source to be informed about new features and new releases. The messages should be made by and made for humans.
As this is a big wish from the people using x2go, I would recommend to introduce a second group for automatically generated mails so this group can be used by people who are interested in reading the regarding messages.
Are there any recommendations about the name of such a group?
Regards,
Heinz

There already is a list x2go-commits. x2go-git does not really state
what it is for...
