Hi all,
we would like to set up an i18n team for X2go.
The task of this team will be the maintenance of translation files in
all X2go projects that utilize translation mechanism. Do I need to be
able to read and write code for this? Definitely, no! Become a member
of a translation team is a possibility to be in close contact to the
developer team without necessarily being able to code. Only
pre-requisite: you use X2go quite regularly and no the functionalities
of the X2go components... plus: your English is good enough to find
good translations of menu items, dialog boxes, etc.
Each translator is responsible for the translation files of his/her
language. Of course, it is also possible to maintain one translation
language as a sub-team (that is: one language is maintained by more
than one person).
Currently these applications are using translation features:
x2goclient pyhoca-gui x2gognomebindings plasma-widget-x2go (KDE$ binding) x2godesktopsharing x2goadmincenter ... (possibly more to come) ...
The idea is to have a dedicated mailing list for announcing x2go-i18n
issues (mostly mails like: ,,i18n Team, please translate
this-and-that'' and a permanent team (with fluctuations, if needed,
but preferably not so much fluctuation among the team members) that
feels responsible and dedicated to providing a multi-lingual X2go
environment to the world.
The tools that we use for translations are currently versatile.
Depending on the team we will find ways to standardize the translation
technologies (if the team members are flexible with using different
i18n tools, then this may not be needed).
So, if you are interested in contributing translations to X2go and
join the development realm by this approach, please-please-please

do you have an overview about the tools? (Maybe just dump it info to i18n an the wiki). If it is mainly gettext we can use launchpad (although I have not played with it - Reinhard?). That way there is no need to for translators to learn how to mess with git or even po-files. Importing the strings can be done automatically via the bazaar import, and the export can be scripted (wget).

This heavily sound like I do not like this Launchpad-dependency...
X2go is not Ubuntu, X2go is upstream.
- PyHoca-GUI uses gettext.
- the Qt4 apps (x2goclient, x2goadmincenter, x2godesktopsharing... use Qt Linguist.
- then we have desktop icons and MIME types
- (?)then we have man pages(?)
- ...
Hmmm... What do others think?

I'd really prefer some distro agnostic solution. I know, technically launchpad is independant from Ubuntu but it is not really. If you want to use a nice user friendly tool, what about transifex? You can either set up your own tx server - but it's not that easy as I heard - or use the service provided at transifex.net

Well, the translation-stuff in pretty independent.

I had a quick glance and it looks very promising. Especially as it supports lots of formats and is free for OSS projects. And the client does look to bad, so we can set up a cron-job. The only thing about the terms of service is:

You can review the most current version of the Terms of Service at any time at: http://www.transifex.net/about/terms/. Your continued use of or access to the Website following the posting of any changes to this Agreement constitutes acceptance of those changes. Indifex may also, in the future, offer new services and/or features through the Website (including, the release of new tools and resources). Such new features and/or services shall be subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement. --- snip ---
But I think we can live with that. Any other comments? If not I think we should give it a try. If we are not satisfied we can still change to another service.....

Aparently this didn't bother Fedora. They switched from a self hosted tx solution to transifex.net recently. We at Mageia choose to use a self hosted version, which is not always fully up to date, since the upstream tx development goes rather fast. If there should be any problems arroung, the people at #transifex are usually quite helpfull.

No, I haven't done it. I'm not in our sysadmin-team and as far as I know, it wasn't that easy to do it. But you can ask the Mageia sysadmin who did most of the stuff: misc@mageia.org You will perhaps find more helpful information on http://www.transifex.org/ the project website. Or you could ask the Fedora guys about their experiences using transifex.net services.
