Hi List,
I installed a new X2Go server and wanted to try out client-side printing.
The server is running Debian Squeeze, with the following X2Go- and CUPS-related packages installed:
ii cups 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - server ii cups-bsd 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - BSD commands ii cups-client 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - client programs (SysV) ii cups-common 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - common files ii cups-driver-gutenprint 5.2.6-1 printer drivers for CUPS ii cups-ppdc 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - PPD manipulation utilities ii cups-x2go 3.0.0.3-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~54~build1 X2GO printer for CUPS ii cupsddk 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System (transitional package) ii cupsys 1.3.8-1+lenny10 Common UNIX Printing System (transitional package) ii cupsys-client 1.3.8-1+lenny10 Common UNIX Printing System (transitional package) ii ghostscript-cups 8.71~dfsg2-9 The GPL Ghostscript PostScript/PDF interpreter - CUPS filters ii hplip-cups 3.10.6-2 HP Linux Printing and Imaging - CUPS Raster driver (hpcups) ii libcups2 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - Core library ii libcupscgi1 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - CGI library ii libcupsdriver1 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - Driver library ii libcupsimage2 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - Raster image library ii libcupsmime1 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - MIME library ii libcupsppdc1 1.4.4-7+squeeze1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - PPD manipulation library ii libxcompext3 1:3.5.0-1-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~36~build1 NX X11 protocol compression extensions library ii libxcompshad3 3.5.0-2-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~24~build1 NX shadowing library ii x2go-keyring 2011.12.07+squeeze~main~12~build1 GnuPG keys of X2go developers ii x2goagent 3.5.0.2-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~49~build1 Special X2go-ized X agent, forked from NX-X11 (NoMachine) ii x2goserver 3.0.99.8-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~388~build1 X2go server daemon scripts ii x2goserver-extensions 3.0.99.8-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~388~build1 X2go server daemon scripts (extensions)
I was unable to follow the instructions from http://wiki.x2go.org/wiki:components:printing, as "apt-get install x2goserver-printing" complains:
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies: x2goserver-printing : Depends: x2goserver (< 3.0.99.8-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~373~build1.1~) but 3.0.99.8-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~388~build1 is to be installed E: Broken packages
I decided to continue anyways and set up printing as described:
Description: Virtual X2GO Printer Location: Cloud Driver: Generic CUPS-X2GO Printer (color, 2-sided printing) Connection: cups-x2go:/ Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=iso_a4_210x297mm sides=one-sided
On the client side (Windows 7 Home Premium, German, 32-bit) I installed X2Go Client V. 3.99.0.2. I enabled client-side printing in the session settings, and configured the local default printer in the X2Go Client general settings.
Nothing happens when I try to print, so I guess I can't do without the x2goserver-printing package.
What needs to be done?
Kind Regards, Stefan
Replying to myself here, as I didn't notice this until after posting:

I will check this ASAP. This should not be this way. However, the
lenny-bpo package should work for you as well as it contains pretty
much the same code as the squeeze 3.0.99.8.
Thanks for reporting!!!

And again a self-reply...
Why the fnord is it trying to install 3.0.99.8-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~388~build1 - a Lenny package - when my sources.list says
[...] #Backports deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib non-free
# X2go Repository deb http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze main # X2go Repository (sources) deb-src http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze main
"bpo" would be an indication that the package is in the backports repository, but even that one is set to squeeze, not lenny. What's going on here? The problem seems to be that even though "x2goserver 3.0.99.8-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~388~build1 X2go server daemon scripts" is installed, "apt-get install x2goserver" claims it's already the newest version, when "x2goserver 3.0.99.8-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~373~build1 X2go server daemon scripts" is available.
"apt-get remove x2goserver x2goserver-extensions" followed by "apt-get install x2goserver x2goserver-extensions" installs the newer version. After that, I am able to install "apt-get install x2goserver-printing".
So while the problem regarding package installation seems to be solved (still not sure if printing works, though), I'm still curious as to what caused it. Any ideas?
Kind Regards, Stefan
During my debug session, I noticed that these two packages:
ii libxcompext3 1:3.5.0-1-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~36~build1 NX X11 protocol compression extensions library ii libxcompshad3 3.5.0-2-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~24~build1 NX shadowing library also had the "x2go-bpo1+lenny"-tag that was causing confusion with regards to ii x2goserver 3.0.99.8-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~388~build1 X2go server daemon scripts ii x2goserver-extensions 3.0.99.8-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~388~build1 X2go server daemon scripts (extensions) (where I wanted to use squeeze packages so x2goserver-printing would become installable)
So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling them. Trying to uninstall them, I got a warning that this would uninstall the FreeNX packages as well, so I repackaged all of the named packages (freenx freenx-media, freenx-session-launcher, freenx-rdp, freenx-server, freenx-vnc, nxagent, x2goserver-printing, x2goserver-extensions, x2goserver, x2goagent) using dpkg-repack just to be safe.
After that, I proceeded with the uninstall/reinstall and re-added the FreeNX packages. Now, FreeNX refuses to connect - X2Go still connects fine, though. The FreeNX error message is: "Session startup failed", with the following Details provided: NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 5180 NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files NX> 285 Setting the preferred NX options NX> 200 Connected to address: 192.168.2.84 on port: 443 NX> 202 Authenticating user: nx NX> 208 Using auth method: publickey HELLO NXSERVER - Version 3.2.0-74-SVN OS (GPL, using backend: 3.3.0) NX> 105 hello NXCLIENT - Version 3.2.0 NX> 134 Accepted protocol: 3.2.0 NX> 105 SET SHELL_MODE SHELL NX> 105 SET AUTH_MODE PASSWORD NX> 105 login NX> 101 User: unlimited1 NX> 102 Password: NX> 103 Welcome to: myservernamehere1 user: unlimited1 NX> 105 listsession --user="unlimited1" --status="suspended,running" --geometry="1366x768x32+render" --type="unix-application" NX> 127 Sessions list of user 'unlimited1' for reconnect:

I thought X2Go was supposed to be usable in parallel, so it seems something broke from one version to the next. Is this the end for concurrent installations, or is it possible to make both work in parallel again?

Please try the NX packages from the heuler Repos. We have
re-engineered building NX packages for Debian/Ubuntu. The heuler
packages should be fully compatible with FreeNX. Though the
nxagent/nxauth binaries are not yet tested.
If you encounter any problems with those, please report that here.

Ok... should not be needed with the NX packages in the heuler Repos.

Yes, it is possible. Please give me the Deb-URLs for FreeNX so that I
can cross-check.
Thanks, Mike

I had used deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
but it seems they are broken: apt-get install --reinstall freenx Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Reinstallation of freenx is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
I think I saw a message mentioning errors with this repository on the freenx-knx mailing list a short while ago, but hadn't bothered, as I kept local copies of the required *.deb files...
Trying deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu lucid main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
does pull new freenx*.deb packages, but not libxcompext3: apt-get install --reinstall libxcompext3 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Reinstallation of libxcompext3 is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
Trying to find out which libxcompext3 my system knows about, I tried this: apt-cache show libxcompext3| egrep '(Maintainer|Version|Filename)'
With the following result (Newlines added for clarity):
Maintainer: Ubuntu MOTU Developers <ubuntu-motu@lists.ubuntu.com> Version: 1:3.5.0-1-0ubuntu1 Filename: pool/main/n/nxcompext/libxcompext3_3.5.0-1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

Maintainer: Oleksandr Shneyder <oleksandr.shneyder@obviously-nice.de> Version: 1:3.5.0-1-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~36~build1
The last one doesn't show a "Filename" entry and seems to be the one currently installed on my system, judging by the matching " 1:3.5.0-1-0~x2go-bpo1+lenny~main~36~build1".
I'm anything but an expert on how to interpret this output. Please let me know if there are any specific commands I should try that might provide further helpful info.

Okay, so I guessed right...
[snip]
I would try this:
Purge everything NX'ish, X2Go'ish... Install NX packages from packages.x2go.org squeeze heuler Install FreeNX from Launchpad (lucid) Install the rest of X2Go from packages.x2go.org squeeze main (or heuler)
I tried something different (before I received your message), and that seems to have helped:
First, I changed the relevant lines of /etc/apt/sources.list like so:
# X2go Repository deb http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze heuler deb http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze main # X2go Repository (sources) deb-src http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu lucid main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
then I ran apt-get update
I did *not* run apt-get upgrade or dist-upgrade, as this would probably have pulled x2go* from heuler. Instead, I ran apt-get dist-upgrade -s to receive a list of the packages that were to be upgraded, and made a note of all the freenx* and lib* files listed. First, I tried apt-get install <listofrelevantpackages>, but that wouldn't help, as again the system believed to already have the current packages installed, so I tried apt-get remove <listofrelevantpackages> followed by apt-get install <listofrelevantpackages>.
Then I removed the heuler line from the /etc/apt/sources.list file and ran apt-get update again (to make sure I don't accidentally pull stuff from heuler on the next upgrade).
That seems to have helped, I now have: ii cups-x2go 3.0.0.3-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~54~build1 X2GO printer for CUPS ii freenx 0.7.3.git110520.3884279-0ubuntu1ppa4 Remote desktop/application/thin-client server rc freenx-media 0.7.3+teambzr104-0freenxteam1~intrepid1 Remote desktop/application/thin-client server media support ii freenx-rdp 0.7.3.git110520.3884279-0ubuntu1ppa4 Remote desktop/application/thin-client server RDP proxy ii freenx-server 0.7.3+teambzr104-0freenxteam1~intrepid1 Remote desktop/application/thin-client server core features ii freenx-session-launcher 0.7.3.git110520.3884279-0ubuntu1ppa4 Remote desktop/application/thin-client server ConsoleKit helper ii freenx-smb 0.7.3.git110520.3884279-0ubuntu1ppa4 Remote desktop/application/thin-client server smb support ii freenx-vnc 0.7.3.git110520.3884279-0ubuntu1ppa4 Remote desktop/application/thin-client server VNC proxy ii libnx-x11 2:3.5.0-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20111206~128~build1 nx-X11 (NoMachine) ii libxcomp1 2.1.0dol1 NoMachine NX - NX compression library ii libxcomp3 2:3.5.0-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20111206~128~build1 NX X compression library ii libxcompext1 2.1.0dol1 NoMachine NX - NX compression library ii libxcompext3 2:3.5.0-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20111206~128~build1 NX X11 protocol compression extensions library ii libxcompshad3 2:3.5.0-0~x2go1+squeeze~heuler~20111206~128~build1 NX shadowing library ii nx-common 0.3.1+svn59-0~ppa1~lucid1 NX server common package. ii nxagent 1:3.5.0-1-2-0ubuntu1ppa8 X server for remote access ii nxlibs 1:3.5.0-1-2-0ubuntu1ppa8 NX support libraries ii nxplugin 3.4.0-3 NX Web Companion ii x2go-keyring 2011.12.07+squeeze~main~12~build1 GnuPG keys of X2go developers ii x2goagent 3.5.0.2-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~49~build1 Special X2go-ized X agent, forked from NX-X11 (NoMachine) ii x2goserver 3.0.99.8-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~373~build1 X2go server daemon scripts ii x2goserver-extensions 3.0.99.8-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~373~build1 X2go server daemon scripts (extensions) ii x2goserver-printing 3.0.99.8-0~x2go1+squeeze~main~373~build1 X2go server daemon scripts (printing)
and both NX and X2go access is possible again.
I noticed that freenx-server is listed as "0.7.3+teambzr104-0freenxteam1~intrepid1" and trying an apt-get install freenx-server attempts to replace sysvinit with upstart, giving me apt-gets "You are about to do something potentially harmful." warning, but this may be due to the fact that I changed the entry in the sources.list file from intrepid to lucid in an attempt to pull in newer packages after the system was already hosed.
I'll try restoring a pre-FUBAR backup some day soon, and check if things are less messy when I keep the freenx repository on intrepid, only upgrading the libs from heuler as Mike suggested - since the old libs seem to be what messed up the machine.
G'nite everyone ;-)

I tried a parallel FreeNX/X2Go installation yesterday, as well. You
still have to use nxagent from the FreeNX Launchpad PPA, as it won't
run with the nx-libs.git version.
As we want to provide nx-libs.git for Debian packaging base of NX
libraries, I will have to check the difference between our sources and
the FreeNX's nxagent sources.
Thanks, Mike

This issue has been fixed now.
nx-libs packages from
deb http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze heuler
should now (once they are built, ETA in 4 hours from now!!!) be usable
with FreeNX packages of the Ubuntu freenx-team.
To be able to use X2Go together with FreeNX on the same server, please
make sure that the following packages have been installed from
packages.x2go.org:
nxagent libnx-x11 libxcomp3 libxcompext3 libxcompshad3
