Hi all,
recently there has been some noise about X2Go re-working its NX code
base. Indeed some quite interesting things have been going on recently
around NX and X2Go.
During the last weeks we have completely reworked the way we build NX
libraries. This has fixed a lot of instability problems people had
recently (summer/autumn 2011) already.
During this last week we set up the X2Go subproject
,,NX (redistributed)'' (aka nx-libs.git on http://git.x2go.org)
The X2Go project's developers (esp. Mike and Reinhard, supported by
Alex and Heinz) have decided to re-distribute NX sources as one big
tarball that builds with GNU make and contains patches not accepted by
NoMachine themselves. The building of the tarball with GNU make
already works fine, the ,,make install'' still needs more work. John
Williams has agreed to contribute on that (thanks for that!!!).
@John: please note that I have uploaded a new tarball containing the
functionality described below ;-):
http://code.x2go.org/releases/source/nx-libs/nx-libs_3.5.0.5-full.tar.gz
During the last days now, we have achieved something that so far has
hardly been imaginable (at least to me).
We have incorporated three patches into nx-libs.git that allows to
turn NX's nxagent into x2goagent during runtime:
01:
http://code.x2go.org/gitweb?p=nx-libs.git;a=blob;f=debian/patches/200_nxagen...
02:
http://code.x2go.org/gitweb?p=nx-libs.git;a=blob;f=debian/patches/201_nxagen...
03:
http://code.x2go.org/gitweb?p=nx-libs.git;a=blob;f=debian/patches/999_nxagen...
X2Go's agent is now part of NX and is maintained in nx-libs.git on
http://git.x2go.org.
The x2goagent package from now on depends on nxagent (as they are
one). The x2goagent package provides a symbolic link to nxagent, a
separate x2goagent man page and a wrapper script in /usr/bin, nothing
else. If nxagent is executed unter the name of x2goagent, the X2GO
branding gets activated within nxagent.
Also: ,,NX (redistributed)'' is fully FreeNX compliant. Install ,,NX
(redistributed)'' from the X2Go package archives and add FreeNX
(Ubuntu Launchpad) on top of that. FreeNX and X2Go can now again be
installed parallely on the same system. Interesting for migrations or
client diversity.
This step also allows us to finally abandon the following source
projects completely now:
nxcomp.git nxcompext.git nxcompshad.git nxproxy.git x2goagent.git
See also at the bottom of this page: http://code.x2go.org/gitweb
As this is esp. a call-out for testing the new packages(!!!!) here are
some short infos on upgrading your X2Go test servers. Packages are
available for Debian squeeze, wheezy, sid and Ubuntu lucid, ...,
precise.
The .deb packages are already available in the X2Go nightly-built
repositories:
http://wiki.x2go.org/wiki:development:nightly-builds?nightly-builds_for_ubuntu_gnu_linux
Please note, that x2goagent will not install when running ,,apt-get
upgrade''. Either you have to run ,,apt-get dist-upgrade'' or
explicitly install x2goagent with ,,apt-get install x2goagent''.

Hi!
in principle this is really great and i appreciate the hard work.
Sadly, the upgraded nxagent had the effect that neither freenx nor neatx-server was working anymore (ubuntu 10.04, neatx-server and x2go side by side using http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu and http://ppa.launchpad.net/x2go/stable/ubuntu)
Looking at the debug-output of the server shows this:
DEBUG daemon:461 /usr/bin/nxagent[8867] stderr: Error: Aborting session with 'Unable to open display 'nx/nx,options=/var/lib/neatx/sessions/09BD2B7A618AF0AEAC0292E490A9D340/options:682''. as i didn't had the time right away to track the problem down, i downgraded the nxagent to the version in the freenx-ppa of ubuntu. It seems there is some issue with xauth in the end. If you need furhter help with this, feel free to contact me.
(slightly) off-topic: In the long run i would like to only use x2go, but there is an issue left which i name here:
When connecting from computers with german-keyboard-layout to a session where an english-keyboard layout was set, it happens that pressing 'ALTGR+Q' (which should write '@') will switch to a mode which always have ALTGR on. Only defocus+focus the window again 'fixes' the problem. No setting of the keyboard-layout via gnome-keyboar-switcher or setting via 'setxkbmap de' is helping. Perhaps you can gave me a hint what to do in such a case or to even track this bug down? Thanks!

Hi!
Please test with the Ubuntu nightly builds (tomorrow! not today!).
Check on launchpad.net/~x2go that packages have been built already.
it seems that the nightly builds work just fine (both neatx-server and x2go). Thanks! Do you know already, when you will have this fix in the stable repo? (because my setup is in production)
nxlibs 1:3.5.0-1-2-0ubuntu1ppa8
-> DROP!!!
they were a dependency with the downgraded nxagent. of course i dropped them, when nxagent was upgraded.
This smells like you are using old X2Go agent code. This has been settled some months ago...

the keyboard-bug also seems to be gone. very good!
perhaps i could now switch to x2go entirely as the keyboard-bug was fatal for my setup and drop support for nx as i have x2go in a thinclient environment, it is more stable and has more features.
for the x2goserver-issues i will report when i have time for this.
Thanks!

I will aim (together with Alex and Reinhard) at declaring the packages
as ,,stable'' for X2Go in 2 weeks' time or os. We need more test
results for that!!!

ok, i tested the actual x2goserver-package (in stable) and reviewed my patches.
prepare("DROP OWNED BY \"x2gouser_$user\"");
because i don't want to manually manage the users for the x2go-stuff i really hacked a hole in x2godbwrapper.pm to create the user, if it doesn't exists in the db. I should do this anyway via my normal user-create-scripts. So there is no real patch needed.
we use kerberos here and to correctly pass the the KRB5CCNAME to the running session i wrote a line with "export KRB5CCNAME" in x2goruncommand. This also is now obsolete because you implemented Xsession-support.
i will patch the files manually again (and pin the package), but it would be great, if 1) will be fixed in trunk. Thanks!

for the principle functionality of authentification/authorization via kerberos there is no problem. To succesfully use single-sign-on with kerberos or be able to held a kerberos-authorized nfsv4 mount you need a valid ticket-cache all the time and the software must know where to look (KRB5CCNAME). the way x2goruncommand was doing it, the started session (in our case it is gnome-session) didn't know anything about KRB5CCNAME and also all subsequent processes didn't know either.

Hello dear X2Go users,

The reasons to create such application are:
- reduce effort of developing and supporting bindings for every desktop environment
- put all x2go related settings in one place. That should improve usability
- add some new features
The application should provide existing features:
- display and manage(open, demount) exported shares
- manage sharing of display (x2godesktopsharing) if display sharing is configured
- suspend X2Go session
The application should be able to communicate with x2goclient and provide some new features:
- switch between "full screen" and "window" modes
- enable/disable multi display (Xinerama) support
- send x2goclient command to open "export directory" dialog. This should be very useful if X2Go session is running in "full screen" mode or x2goclient is minimized to system tray.
I'll be appreciative for your comments and for suggestions about this application's name.
Having one application (or better: applet) for this makes absolutely
sense. However, I recommend and would love to see that this
application fluently integrates into common desktop shells.
My name proposals are
X2Go Desktop Integration X2Go Desktop Manager

Hello dear X2Go users,
I want to share with you my idea to create new application, which should replace such packages as kde/lxde/gnome-bindings and x2godesktopsharing.
<snip> I think it is an excellent idea. Of course, the devil will be in the details :) - John
Hi!
to perhaps make it clearer: the versions given are now running fine. using nxagent with the version 2:3.5.0.2-0~135~lucid1 breaks nx, but works fine with x2go.
