#4 might collide with #1. Are you sure you don't want to do #4 for a 4.0.3.x or 4.0.4.x release instead?

I should have mentioned #1:

1. As a high priority, I will focus only on desktop environments which already work, but you have to specify the command manually. For example, IceWM and OpenBox. Any desktop environments which require non-trivial workarounds (such as Enlightenment, whose bug #555 seems to be non-trivial to fix) will be a low priority for me.

2. I believe we should add new features like this during a 4.0.x.0 release rather than a 4.0.x.y release.
