I use small installations, but I think you don't need this packages to be scalable. You need Postgres and LDAP. But maybe I am wrong.

yes you are right - multiserver features require a "ON" LDAP branch inside a LDAP tree and with the help of a postgress db you can collect the session db contents in one place on the net. The GUI is just for easier administration.
