I found a solution, but maybe it is not optimal. After your hint that this problem could be related to xorg, I activated the xorg-edgers repository in ubuntu tweak. From there one can get the newest x-packages for ubuntu. After upgrading the plugin is working now. So this problem seems really to be related to xorg. I hope there will be soon a fixed libX11-6 package in the official ubuntu repositories. Thanks for your help!

Soeren, I found a Debian bug that looks very similar:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=569036
This looks like it might be an upstream bug perhaps in libX11-6 and got triggered in that Firefox version.

Hi Gerry, i also tried it on my private laptop (also ubuntu 10.04 and firefox 3.6.6, but amd64) and on my pc at work (fedora 13, amd64). i got this problem on all pcs... so it don't seem to be a problem with my machine. on fedora I have firefox 3.6.4, as far as I remember. is there a possibility to generate more debugging output from firefox without rebuilding the whole browser? there are no additional plugins installed on the machines.

Hi Soeren, Have you tried connecting from a different version of Firefox to try to narrow down the problem? If you have another machine you could also install the same version of Firefox to see if it is Firefox or something with your installation. As far as versions, I've been using Firefox 3.6.3 without any problems.

Installation went fine. When trying to connect to the test server the browser (firefox 3.6.6) is crashing with the following error:
firefox-bin: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0. firefox-bin: ../../src/xcb_io.c:249: process_responses: Assertion `(((long) (dpy->last_request_read) - (long) (dpy->request)) <= 0)' failed. Aborted firefox-bin: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.
creating a new firefox profile did not work. any other ideas?
