All three work very smoothly while at the same time another host here draws backups from some servers on the internet... I use 16m-png-jpeg-9 for that. 3.99 Testing - Very serious issues with image packing

Hello, all. This seems to be the most serious and potentially showstopping issue I've found. It is a Windows only issue. It does not occur in our Linux client testing. Something is seriously wrong with image packing. I'm guessing this has something to do with NXAgent 3.5 but I'm really not sure. It first appeared when I install Pyhoca which I am assume pulled in the new agent. On the other hand, reverting to 3.0.1-4 did not fix the problem which has me very suspicious. I am writing from Linux right now but I will test that again later. If it is not the nxagent or the 3.99 client, then we'll need to find whatever it was that Pyhoca pulled in. I did uninstall ghostscript and vcxsrv after uninstalling Pyhoca. I can confirm that the problem persists even after backleveling to 3.0.1-4 so I'm not sure that this is specifically 3.99 but it is a crippling problem. On to the actual problem. We normally use 16m-png-jpeg packing which seems to give us the fastest performance and crispest looking screen on our WAN only environment. I'm honestly not sure what this setting controls. I assume it means we are compressing png and jpeg images as opposed to the default 16m-jpeg which then only compresses jpegs? I don't know what the 16m is - is that the size of the cache? When we use that from a Windows client now, all the images are thoroughly corrupted and unusable. This was noticeable in the desktop icons and in the KDE splash screen. We changed the packing to 16m-jpeg and thought the problem went away because the splash screen and desktop icons appeared properly. Our enthusiasm was short-lived. All jpegs seems to be corrupt. The only way we could get a non-corrupt screen was to use nopack but that made for lousy performance especially when scrolling a graphics intensive page such as www.wsj.com or www.cnn.com. Interestingly, even after upgrading, the client details screen says we are running NXPROXY - version 3.4.0. I don't know what in the Pyhoca installation caused this but completely removing Pyhoca and previous x2goclient installations from both file system and registry and installing 3.99 has not fixed the problem. x2goclient version bumping -> 3.99.0.0

Hi devs, today I had a chat with Alex about x2goclient, the versioning, the next major version (Baikal) of x2goclient, etc. o we have bumped the version to 3.99.0.0 in Git o the next major stable release will be 4.0.0.0 (x2goclient/Baikal) o Oleksandr will build a Windows x2goclient with that same version number Packages for Debian are building currently, they will enter the nightly builds repos as well as the ,,main'' repos. Please go ahead and test these new versions, please. Report issues to the x2go-dev mailing list, so that we get as many issues fixed before calling the thing 4.0.0.0. I just installed it a few minutes ago, and I did have a slight snag at first but it seems to have disappeared (not sure if it is the same issue Daniel saw). My server has (I think) x2goserver 3.0.1-5, from here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=18028 I am testing on two Windows client machines, both running 64-bit Windows 7. Call them CL1 and CL2. CL1 was initially running x2goclient 3.01-13, and had a session in progress. I installed 3.99 on CL2 (initially without vcxsrv), and started a new session (all my sessions are LXDE), which worked well for the minute I had it open. Then I logged out of the CL2 session, and suspended the CL1 session. Then I tried to resume the suspended session on CL2, but it froze during attempted connection, nothing at all happened for more than a minute, so I aborted and restarted the client on CL2. Then I resumed the suspended session on CL1 (CL1 was still client 3.01-13), and it worked. Then on CL2 I started a new session, and that worked. So I logged out of the session on CL2, suspended the session on CL1 once again, and tried to resume the session on CL2. Success! It came right up on CL2 with the 3.99 client. After a minute, I suspended the session again. Next I tested with vcxsrv 1.10.3.1. I used the installer to install vcxsrv on CL2 into 'Program Files (x86)', and then went into Settings... for x2goclient and specified to use vcxsrv. Note that the default looked for vcxsrv.exe in 'Program Files' instead of 'Program Files (x86)', but it was easy to change that. I resumed the session on CL2 and it worked. So I suspended the session and resumed the session on CL1 (3.01-13), and that worked. So I suspended the session again, and on CL1 I installed vcxsrv and x2goclient 3.99, and resumed the session on CL1 again, and it worked. I have been running it on CL1 for about 30 minutes now, and no problems yet. I'll keep running it (I use CL1 every day) so if you do not hear from me for a while, that means I haven't had any problems. I will, of course, post about any problems that I might have. So hopefully you don't hear from me for a while!

Hi there, can anyone make an estimate how much trouble it is, to build a package with debug-symbols for the libX11/x2goagent. I had a quick peek into the build system, but didn't get far. x2goserver package with setuidwrapper

Hi All, I have added a setuidwrapper in C to the x2goserver package. This setuidwrapper will allow us to use the x2goserver package again on Debian sid. As I am not at all a C coder, this definitely needs a review. Alex, Reinhard, Morty, could you take a look at the current code base in x2goserver.git master??? x2go live-build based livesystems

Last friday we've been experimenting with creating thin clients using the live-build infrastructure. This is the infrastrucutre that is used by both debian live and from oneiric onwards, the ubuntu live cds. This worked included backporting relevant packages from oneiric to natty and fixing some annoying bugs for getting actual working packages. Mainly as a self reminder for me, here some test instructions for *natty* systems. Feedback (as always) welcome: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:siretart sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install live-build x2go-rootfs mkdir /tmp/build cd /tmp/build cp -rv /usr/share/x2go-livefs/auto . sudo lb clean lb config sudo lb build after this, you should end up with a lubuntu/natty based live cd 'binary-hybrid.iso' that has an lxdm configured to autologin the user 'user'. Moreover, x2goclient and rdesktop should be available in the system. This binary-hybrid.iso is for me less than 500MiB in size and AFAIUI (but I didn't test myself) should also worke from an usb stick (dd if=binary-hybrid of=/dev/sdX). hints: /tmp/build is best done on a tmpfs. Hello, all. I've been doing more testing with X2Go on Windows clients and it does seem to be a more difficult environment for X2Go users. I'll cover the issues in a couple of emails. In installed vcxsrv and enabled full screen mode, i.e., I do not start X when x2goclient starts so that it can be told to run with fullscreen. Full screen mode works however there is no way to leave it. There is no magic pixel and neither Alt-Ctl-M nor Alt-Ctl-F work - John

libxcomp3 vs nxcomp

Hi Reinhard, X2go formerly used binary packages of names nxcomp, nxcompshad and nxcompext. These are now called libxcomp3, libxcompshad3, libxcompext3. I have added conflicts stanzas to the new packages, but on install they do not enforce the uninstallation of the nxcomp* binary packages. What is needed to force uninstallation of the old nx packages formerly shipped with X2go? x2goserver scripts in /usr/bin vs. /usr/lib/x2go

hi all, I have manually tab'ified all x2goserver scripts, so that we now have a more consistent code indentation in all those scripts. Apart from that I have also re-arranged files (/usr/bin vs. /usr/lib/x2go). http://wiki.x2go.org/roadmap#somewhen_work_in_progress However, all scripts are still installed to /usr/bin (debhelper) as it actually needs quite some more work to introduce /usr/lib/x2go as the location for those scripts that are needed directly by x2go client implementations. As the identation re-work has been a manual re-editing of all files, it possibly has been prone to errors. Thus, the next heuler package of x2goserver might be a little wobbly. Currently, the Makefile in X2go Git (x2goserver.git) is also broken. I will fix this, once the separation of /usr/bin and /usr/lib/x2go is complete. Multiple sessions fail in 3.0.1.18

Hello, all. In x2goclient 3.0.1-4, one was able to run multiple concurrent sessions even though it was not officially supported and would generate some warnings on the first session when the second was opened. However, it did work. In fact, this very functionality is very important to our first potential large client who wants to create separate environments for each client engagement and has many employees who simultaneously work on multiple clients. This now completely breaks in 3.0.1.18. The first session loses connectivity when the second session is established. Is there any possibility of restoring the previous functionality and even making it officially supported? I use it every day - one desktop into a compilation system on one site and another session to my regular work desktop in the data center. Thanks - John

Hi, is there a problem with the i915 graphic chip and the kernel used in the thinclient? Hi there, is there a place where I can store icons for the thinclients? When you start the "normal" client you can access your local hard disk. But in this case I need the data somewhere on the NFS share. If I put the pictures in /home/x2go I can't see them... Best regards Markus

Strange noise on logging screen

Hi there, I have a little problem with the thin client. After the startup when the logging screen appears I can hear a strange noise. Some kind of white noise. I'm not quite sure but I guess it comes out of the pc speaker. Any idea? Best regards Markus

I've gotten to where I can launch pyhoca-gui on Ubuntu 10.10 which is running in a chroot environment with Android v2.34 on the $249 Nook Color Tablet I get to the point of a successful connection but then pyhoca-gui dies while logging me in. X2go real life usage

Hello list, after an update to the current set of packages there are some points that should be (at least in my opinion) discussed. 1) Session Administration At the moment, I can't see a user-friendly replacement of x2go- sessionadministration. This tool is crucial for network usage of x2go since your local administrator needs to be able to reset sessions, connect to an users session and all that stuff. Would the old code compiled against the qt3-libs in Debian Squeeze lead to a working solution? Is there another tool that I wasn't able to find? x2godesktop- sharing is of course not useable if the user session did freeze. Was is the recommended way of stopping an users session (please read topic two before answering, it's not that easy)? 2) Database handling How is the database cleanup of the sqlite3 database /var/lib/x2go/x2go_sessions supposed to work? From my point of view this database is constantly growing. I can't see that old sessions are cleaned up. If a user connects to a LXDE of Debian Squeeze and performs a logout via the menu, his session is still listed inside the database. So this database is constantly growing what is definitely not what one wants. Another problem with this are hanging or crashed sessions. The database gets very quickly inconsistent with the real system state. The user sees a lot of session that are marked active at login but the processes belonging to these sessions do not exist anymore. I found manually cleaning up the database worked but this isn't comfortable at all (i.e. not possible to do for everyone). x2gocleansession is running but doesn't seem to be able to clean up the database (permissions are correct, new sessions are inserted). 3) Smartcard usage This might be a separate topic which leads to a bug, but somehow the timing between x2go und the scdaemon messed up. If a user does a session suspend via smartcard and puts his card in again after the card is available he gets an "invalid card" error message. If one is a bit more patient and waits for 5-6 seconds it works again. Did someone else experience this? I can live with this at the moment. How do others handle these problems in big networks? At the moment I'm really struggling to get to the point where x2go was in terms of usability at "qt3-times" (I know they are gone). Kind regards, Martin Öhler

Hi list, in case the problem is really with the DLLs shipped with the Windows client, I can confirm a similar issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 (which is only available as a 64-bit product) and Nomachine's NX client. What helped there was replacing the files cygwin, cygz, cygpng12 and cygcrypto-0.9.8 with their counterparts from cygwin 1.7. Maybe this is related? Kind Regards Stefan

Windows Client Issue

Hi, I am have been able to setup x2go server very quick on a ubuntu instance. I have a couple of questions though I have been able to connect using windows client version 3.01-4 but not with 3.01-18 I get the following error NXPROXY - Version 3.4.0 Copyright (C) 2001, 2007 NoMachine. X2go for armel on Debian

Hi all, I have started building packages for armel architecture on Debian squeeze. As the build process takes tremendously slow I will derive the following limitation for armel packages provided by the X2go project: o only the ,,main'' area will be built (not nightly-builds) o only Debian _squeeze_ packages will be built o only packages needed on the client-side will be built Nearly all packages are already uploaded to packages.x2go.org, apart from x2goclient. This one is currently building which will take some more hours. On ARMEL architectures you then can add this line: http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze main and then you should be able to install x2goclient, pyhoca-gui, pyhoca-cli and their dependencies. As I have not such a hardware device at hand, I will depend on feedback with this. Please give your comments and success/failure stories. X2go backport packages for Debian lenny

As many of you still use lenny on the servers, I persuaded him to make this a contribution to the community. Any hints how to debug this problem? alsa recognizes the soundcard, it is supportet by the running linux kernel. x2goagent / nx-libs 3.5.x.y available for Debian/Ubuntu

Hi all, a couple of minutes ago I have built and uploaded x2goagent 3.5.0.2 and NX libs 3.5.0-x to X2go's Debian repos and they have also been built on launchpad.net/~x2go for Ubuntu. x2go and android tablets - some progress

Pardon me for posting this to the x2go-dev list but I think this is important because of what x2go could do for tablet computers.. I wanted to share this as I think I'm getting close to success. I recently was persuaded by a variety of reviews to buy the $249 (US $) Barnes and Noble Nook Color tablet. short list of features: - 7 inch tablet - OMAP3 processor defaults to 800Mhz but I've overclocked it to 1Ghz (other folks go as high as 1.2Ghz) - WIFI, bluetooth and 1 microUSB port Not to bore you with the details but I rooted the Nook tablet and then updated it to the latest version of Android 2.3.3 (version name = Gingerbread) Then I installed Ubuntu 10.10 successfully on it. First with the LXDI but later switched it to Gnome (just because I'm more at home with Gnome) I added the Ubuntu x2go repository then sudo apt-get update *Now... the interesting part...* Because this is an OMAP3 ARM processor any "sudo apt-get install xxxxxx" where = xxxxxx package name Gets automatically redirected (by Launchpad I guess) to Canonical's ARMEL (ARM repository) to complete the download/install request. Therefore whatever you are requesting needs to have been built/added to that ARM repository. The 'sudo apt-get install x2goclient" did successfully run but so far it only finds the following in the ARMEL repository for x2go: *p python-x2go - python module for X2go client support* *p x2goserver - x2go server daemon scripts* I took some pictures with my cell phone of the Nook Color terminal display above the above & I'll attach them to this but they may be a bit hard to see in any detail. The engineer ordered a custom rack in which to house 21 ARM PandaBoards. 20 of them would be used for package building, with the 21st used as a master board for monitoring and controlling access for each user. Each board is also connected to a 300GB SATAII USB hard drive, giving a total of 6TB of storage in the server<http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/canonical-builds-a-42-core-arm-cluster-s…> . The system works by allocating time on the server when a request is received from a user. The master board checks for a free PandaBoard, reboots that free board, and presents the user with a clean build environment in which to work. Once a build has been completed the board is flagged as free and the process is repeated. One of problems I have with it, that is very detailed, but has very little information about what is really needed, what is optional and what is only interesting for core-devs. I'd suggest splitting it up in three main sections: * A very general section, where to find what. * A more detailed section for beginners * A core-dev section, containing guidelines Main things I'd like to change: * Git-Config: This should be a link to an appropriate page. Setting the ui-color to auto, really does not belong here. * Devsripts - Nice, but in no way needed by a "normal" dev. - Should go into a Core-dev-guidelines-section. If not it should explain why they are needed. * Using git: There is some important information hidden between the "How to use git for dummies" text. I think that should be condensed. We should then add the a "how to use git for dummies" on an extra page - or just link a good one. Upgrading our git branches to NX 3.5

Hi, I've started to upgrade the git branches on code.x2go.org to 3.5. So far I've completed: - nxcomp - nxcompext - nxcompshad - nxproxy x2goagent is still missing, and this is a bit hairy. In order to find out what has been actually changed compared to NX, I've compared the sources in nxagent-3.4.0-5.tar.gz to what we ship in x2goagent. Here, I noticed that 'our' x2goagent tarball actually combines several NX 'upstream' tarballs, among others 'nxagent' and 'nx-x11'. It is not totally clear to me what tarballs have been exactly used to construct the x2goagent sources. As for modifications, I've grepped through all sources for 'x2go' markers, and compared those files against the NX version. Find the diff attached to this e-mail. Alex, do you remember any additional changes that have been done to the NX sources? As comparison, I've had a look what the freenx team is doing [1]. It seems that they have had similar problems and also combined several tarballs into the source package 'nx-x11'. Feel free to check. They have accumulated a fair number of patches (18 to my counting) so far, which are mostly undocumented but generally look reasonable on the first glance. I think it would make sense to consider using their 'nx-x11' package as basis for x2goagent and add the x2go modification as additional patch to that package. MacOS x2goclient

Hi everyone, sorry I didn't resurface sooner - some of you might remember my list of questions from March 2011 (<https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/x2go-dev/2011-March/001817.html>) - but I had to delay my NX-to-x2go migration plans due to another, more urgent software migration. As the deadline for that migration is coming up, and I'm hoping to meet it, I can now start making plans for my upcoming NX-to-x2go migration. While most of my users are using Windows clients, a few oddballs are using MacOS. On <http://www.x2go.org/index.php?id=1&L=4>, it says "x2goclient: * MacOS version (outdated - we are looking for hardware)" I might get my hands on a used Mac Mini, Model MB138D/A, however, I have no Mac-specific know-how. So, if this machine is useful for one of the developers on this list, please contact me *by e-mail* (no use in spamming the list with "me-too"s). I'm not giving the machine away, but you may use it free of charge for the duration of the tests. If you are an individual developing on your own, personal time, I will have to require a deposit, something around 150-180 Euro, just to be sure you won't run away with the machine. ;-) You will get your money back once I get the machine back. Companies with a certain posting history on this list, like Mike Gabriel/DAS-NETZWERKTEAM are exempt from this requirement. Mike, do you have any idea if pyhoca-gui will run on MacOS? SOLVED: keyboard freezes with X2go thin clients

Hi all, hi eps. Heinz, with some gCards you can observe Xorg/kbd freezes on X2go thin clients (I had a discussion with Heinz about that lately on the phone). I have found a solution for this: use kernel boot option ,,nomodeset''. The freeze is actually a graphical freeze and a result of interference between console fb and Xorg. The latest X2go TCE packages have this boot option set by default. Hello, is there a way to use x2goclient with ssh-agent(1)? i am using ssh-agent with my etoken to login via nxclient on some machines. is this possible with x2goclient? i've started x2goclient from the same shell where a ssh login to the remote server worked with agent auth. but x2goclient seems not to use the running ssh-agent. thanks for any help. heiko

nice, ionice with x2go?

Has anyone experimented with 'nice' or 'ionice' to improve x2go responsiveness? If so, what x2go processes might benefit? The linux server that I am running x2goserver on sometimes has high loads, both CPU and disk IO. However, there should be plenty of resources left, since never are all of the CPU cores maxed out, and the root filesystem is running on a fast SSD. Nevertheless, sometimes x2go responsivity will go to almost nothing for a few seconds. So, I was thinking to try x2go with 'nice -n -10' and 'ionice -c 2 -n 0' or even 'ionice -c 1', but I am not sure how to go about that. Does there exist anywhere a short description of the jobs that x2go starts when it is invoked, and what each does? Currently I see: x2gocleansessions (root, PPID 0) x2goagent (user, PPID 1) x2goruncommand (user, PPID 0) ssh (.x2go) (user, PPID 0) sshfs (.x2go) (user, PPID 0) but I am not sure which are important to responsivity, and which scripts started which processes (so I can edit the scripts to insert 'nice' commands).

Fedora issues

Hi, I struggled mightily to get the git versions of x2goclient and x2goserver to work on two Fedora 15 machines today, and finally succeeded. Along the way I ran into a bunch of problems - here are some that I remember: 1. Out of date or missing information on the wiki - known problem, and I guess I can help with this at least. 2. The way the nxcomp Makefile installs symbolic links causes a subtle "permission denied" problem if SELinux is enforcing. The "install" command installs libraries with the correct SELinux context; the "cp -a" command does not install symbolic links with the correct context. (I do not know whether rpmbuild automatically fixes such problems; if it does, then this would only be a problem for installs from tarballs.) 3. For some reason (I could not figure out why), the automatically-generated password was not inserted into the file ~/.x2go/sqlpass. That file was empty. I worked around this by manually resetting the password to another random password and putting the password in that file. 4. In x2gostartagent, X2GO_LIB does not seem to be set anywhere. So I added a line to set it. 5. The Makefile of nxcomp installs the libraries into /usr/local/lib, not /usr/lib/x2go, by default. So I added /usr/local/lib to LD_LIBRARY_PATH in x2gostartagent. 6. This is not an x2go bug, but Fedora has a very annoying problem that xauth keeps printing the message: xauth: /home/greenrd/.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored I do not know what causes this, or what its significance is. I workaround it by doing: rm ~/.Xauthority* 7. It is necessary to set the hostname in /etc/hosts, or xauth will complain that the display is invalid. Strangely, the Fedora installation CD neglects to do this! 8. At least one key, the left arrow key, doesn't work if you tell x2goclient to keep the same keyboard layout - I had to tell it my keyboard layout. -- Robin Green

x2go thin client environment connecting to server on internet?

Hello there. I am currently looking at a solution for a school, and ideally, it would be using a small image distributed via PXE, wich contains x2go. This client would then connect to a cloud server. The wiki says that the TCE is not meant to be used for internet connections, yet it also states that the pxe server and x2go server should be kept separate. Would this work, or do i need another approach? My plan was to build the PXE image on a testing server, and put it on a Cisco ASA for distributing.
