Hello list, since x2goagent uses its own X window system, there are two libX11.so in the system. Unfortunatelly, some programs (darktable) link against /usr/lib/x2go/libX11.so.6 instead /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 and the compilation fails. Is there a way how to exclude the /usr/lib/x2go directory from the linker system-wide? (Arch linux.) Hello list, since x2goagent uses its own X window system, there are two libX11.so in the system. Berlios is closing

Hello, Mike and I received a message that BerliOS will be closed at the end of 2011. This will have an effect on our major mailing lists. Mike and I have decided to host the lists as a part of the x2go domain. We'll keep you informed about the next steps. After the new groups are ready to use, we won't (auto-) add members of the existing groups, but we'll send an invitation. Thanks to Gmane the history of the groups will survive. Regards, Heinz

Wiki relaunch

Hello list, I've made some major changes to the wiki installation so that our dokuwiki installation can be used as well as our project website. Because of some big changes it was not able to change the wiki for the time of one week. I've changed the name server entry some minutes ago so that the new wiki pages will be accessible in the next hours or days (depending on where you are). You will recognize the new pages by the projects own colors (blue and white) and the new page contents of the front page. I've added a notification area showing you the way to the old TOC-like front page. As it was not possible for me to change every item of my todo list, you'll find a lot of FIXMEs on the pages, but they will vanish time after time. You'll be able to log in with your existing account. The wiki configuration buttons are now located on the bottom of the site. There will be no sidebar any more, but you will find direct links on a bar on the top. There's still space left for further direct links. Other than before you'll be able to edit wiki pages direct after registration - please keep in mind that we believe that everybody who joins the team wants to help our project. I can answer now Mikes question if it is possible to send all wiki changes to a mailing list: yes it will be possible. Even inf the new documentation pages aren’t ready now I would like to convince you to use namespaces in future. By using namespaces inside dokuwiki it will be possible to add localisation support to the pages and to have separated navigation and information spaces. All frontpages of a namespace are named "index" and should contain TOCs like lists to the contents of the regarding namespace. I'll include pagetemplates very soon to make wikipages look more uniform. Again: the new wiki is work in progress. But as it is already usable I think it is the best to start using it. 100% Reproducible: x2go session crash problem

Hello, We have recently started using x2go internally and although it's wonderful, we have encountered the same issue that was discussed previously. http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel/2461 After googling a bit it seems like this is still unsolved. I have a 100% reliable way to reproduce the issue and a publicly accessible server which can be used for testing, if any one in the team is interested in debugging. I'm happy to provide access, provide a copy of the VM, install packages / do whatever. If server access is required please email me off list and i'll provide username/ssh key. I couldn't see a bug tracker on the website so I will list the steps to reproduce below: Steps to reproduce: 1) Log In: 2) Open 'record it now' (Press Alt + 2 type 'record it now' and enter ) 3) Select full screen record 4) Uncheck the sound recording option 5) Start recording 6) once it counts down and starts recording hit the stop button The session 'crash' is then triggered. This is on a fully up to date ( including backports ) version of Ubuntu 10.04 using KDE and the X2go PPA. Debugging is turned on and there is nothing printed in syslog other than it appears the server restarts. Kind regards Andrew

New X2go releases (as of 2011-10-12)

Hi all, two weeks ago the X2go project developers team has agreed on releasing X2go source projects in shorter release intervals than before. The goal of this is to make new code and X2go features available to the community sooner rather then later and to provide more clarity on what is considered stable and up-to-date and what not. The plan is to release code that - we consider as stable - has been tested by more than one person and - has not been changed in X2go Git for more than 14 days the upcoming Wednesday. As this is the first release shot we will take (after a long time with only irregurlar releases), the changelogs of the individual projects are quite long. Feel free to study these changelog (at the end of this mail) or not. x2gobasepath and Debian Lenny

Hi Mike, today I tried packaging/building the x2goserver-3.0.99.6. from your git for my Debian Lenny. On my system that perl script 'x2gobasepath' did not that what it should do. It prints just nothing instead of "/usr". When I use the default Debian stuff building the package, that script itself is installed in /usr/bin/x2gobasepath and the perl lib are installed in /usr/lib/x2go My temporary fix was just modifying the print in x2gobasepath to get the required "/usr" for my system. But that should not be the final solution. ---- However I tried that "self compiled" and "self packaged" way, because I run crazy about reproducible session crashes of my xfce4 desktop of my 64bit server. X2goagent seems to die without any hint in the session logs, if I use that one from the Lenny repo: http://packages.x2go.org/debian/, when I close a synaptic, gimp, eclipse, HP-toolbox .... and other tools. Unfortunately the number of tools seem to become an increasing number the last weeks. Interesting was that it depends on: a) when that critical tool was started (e.g. just after the session startup or later) b) if I used the start menu or a terminal (e.g. sudo synaptic worked fine, but starting from menu crashes the session often) The self compiled stuff seems to be now more stable for these first hours (finger crossed). So either it depends on the compile machine and some library dependencies or it may be a heap memory problem of x2goagent. And yes, I know that you wrote the stability might have something to do with the old X-server compiled-in into the x2goagent ... If that finally doesn't help preventing the crash pain, I hope I can ask you, if the new x2goserver-3.0.99.6.0 would work together with the old stable x2goagent-3.4.0-3-1 to prevent all these silly sudo log messages from the old x2goserver-3.0.1-5 in my rsyslog data base. X2go -. shorter nano release cycles

hi devs, last week Alex and I talked about shorter nano release cycles and thus shorter cycles of declaring code as stable. Currently, there is no automation and mostly I urge ourselves to declare code as stable. Some projects are actually releasable but do not get released as they get forgotten (e.g. the PXE project x2gothinclient.git). What Alex and I came up with and what I would like to shorly discuss here is a more automated, but still humanly triggered mechanism. The version number of Git projects in X2go Git that (a) are usable (b) are not obviously broken/buggy/instable (c) have not been worked on for 2 weeks (d) have been tested (at least by me and somebody else) will get incremented in the last digit (1.2.3.x -> 1.2.3.y) after these two weeks, packages will be declared as stable and provided in the corresponding repositories. The shorter release intervals will allow us to keep a better track of the milestones within the projects we have made. I partly consider this as a facility of documentation (that is: documenting usable states of the code). x2go portable configuration file (a la .nxs)

Hi everyone, I've been trying to create a "portable" x2go configuration file in order to send it by mail to a remote user (as one would do with a nxclient .nxs configuration file), but I have not been able to get do it (and asking our dear friend google didn't helped either). x2godesktopsharing integration into x2goserver

Hi all, yesterday I have been working on the C++ code in x2godesktopsharing. To make sure that x2godesktopsharing really gets shutdown on x2goterminate-session, I have added a script to the x2godesktopsharing package that detects the corresponding x2godesktopsharing process for a given session $X2GO_SESSION. This script ,,x2godesktopsharing-terminate" will be exectuted by ,,x2goterminate-session". This brought up the next question: how do we want to handle x2godesktopsharing while a session is suspended. This older versions of X2go (I think) this has been possible. I consider this as a security problem and something that most users do not want. Imagine the scenario: o start x2go session o start x2godesktopsharing o allow user foo to share your desktop and remember this setting permanently (via .x2godesktopsharing/settings) o suspend your session (and x2godesktopsharing continues to offer desktop sharing... :-( ) o user foo tries to connect to your desktop while you are away (while your session is suspended o -> this is YUK! So what I have done is this: o on session suspend, terminate x2godesktopsharing and remember that it was running, place a server-side empty file ,,resume-desktopsharing'' into $HOME/.x2go/C-$X2GO_SESSION/ o on session resume, check if that file is there and if so, launch a new instance of x2godesktopsharing, with sharing mode set to disabled. Feedback, comments? X2go i18n team

Hi all, we would like to set up an i18n team for X2go. The task of this team will be the maintenance of translation files in all X2go projects that utilize translation mechanism. Do I need to be able to read and write code for this? Definitely, no! Become a member of a translation team is a possibility to be in close contact to the developer team without necessarily being able to code. Only pre-requisite: you use X2go quite regularly and no the functionalities of the X2go components... plus: your English is good enough to find good translations of menu items, dialog boxes, etc. Each translator is responsible for the translation files of his/her language. Of course, it is also possible to maintain one translation language as a sub-team (that is: one language is maintained by more than one person). Currently these applications are using translation features: x2goclient pyhoca-gui x2gognomebindings plasma-widget-x2go (KDE$ binding) x2godesktopsharing x2goadmincenter ... (possibly more to come) ... The idea is to have a dedicated mailing list for announcing x2go-i18n issues (mostly mails like: ,,i18n Team, please translate this-and-that'' and a permanent team (with fluctuations, if needed, but preferably not so much fluctuation among the team members) that feels responsible and dedicated to providing a multi-lingual X2go environment to the world. The tools that we use for translations are currently versatile. Depending on the team we will find ways to standardize the translation technologies (if the team members are flexible with using different i18n tools, then this may not be needed). Hi Alex, today I have implemented basic X2go desktop sharing client support in Python X2go. The commit I already uploaded to X2go Git is very basic and needs quite some fine-tuning and testing before I will weave it into PyHoca-GUI. However, with pyhoca-cli it is already possible to test the desktop sharing client code in Python X2go. While working on that I have encountered two problems, though: 1. When the x2godesktopsharing tray applet gets killed by SIGTERM it does neither remove its socket file /tmp/x2godesktopsharing_... nor its lock file... As a consequence, the x2golistdesktops script returns stale desktop sessions resulting from stale x2godesktopsharing lock/socket files. x2godesktopsharing only removes its socket/lock files if the ,,Beenden'' item in the applet's tray menu is clicked. 2. When connecting to x2godesktopsharing the x2godesktopsharing applet always shows wrong username: (a) session already running as user-a, start x2godesktopsharing (b) connect a shadow session to user-a's session (as user-b) (c) user-a then gets asked if it will accept an incoming connection from user-a(!!!!), here it should ask for user-b instead The basic question here is a question of concept. I currently only see this approach: (i) -> pass another parameter from x2gostartagent to x2godesktopsharing (client mode), this parameter will be a representation of the connecting user name (and maybe gecos field?) It would be good to fix both issues some time in the near future. Apart from these two issues x2godesktopsharing works brilliantly. Another cosmetic change could be an improvement of x2godesktopsharing's whitelist/blacklist editor (e.g. add users manually, maybe even add groups manually etc.). But that is rather of a lower priority... hi all, until now the package x2gognomebindings and x2golxdebindings lead to conflicts when used on the same server. Conflicts did not occur during package installation but during run-time. To be more precise: during runtime when using shared folders (which create desktop icons on your X2go session desktop screen). The described problems mostly were due to name space overlaps in sshfs MIME types and desktop link names for both desktop environments LXDE and GNOME. Yesterday, I have committed some patches to both packages and the x2goserver scripts x2gomountdirs and x2goumount-session that make x2gognomebindings and x2golxdebindings to co-exist with each other on one system very smoothly. Changes that are visible to the user: Desktop icon names (when using GNOME): '_home_mike(sshfs-disk)' -> '_home_mike (sshfs-disk-gnome) or (when using LXDE): '_home_mike(sshfs-disk)' -> '_home_mike (sshfs-disk-lxde) Icons matchin '* (sshfs-disk-lxde)' are opened with pcmanfm (LXDE file browser), icons matching '* (sshfs-disk-gnome)' will be opened with GNOME's nautilus file browser. Hi devs, a short summary on changes in x2goserver... First of all: version increment in debian/changelog -> 3.0.99.6. New script x2golistmounts <session_id> -> retrieve a list of mounted shares on a per-session basis (x2goserver-extensions) -> will need that for pyhoca-gui New script x2gofeature <feature_name> -> provide the possibility to query the X2go server for its functionalities e.g. x2gofeature X2GO_PRINTING -> writes ,,ok'' to stdout if x2goserver-printing package is installed, otherwise it writes ,,not available'' to stdout x2gofeature is pluggable, that is you can extend the X2go server core package with extensions, for more details take a look at /usr/share/x2go/x2gofeature.de/ and the x2gofeature man page. x2gofeature can be used by X2go clients to detect server functionality before using a certain command. This is not a security improvement, but a step forward in the realm of server/client communication. Moved x2goumount from x2goserver-compat into x2gognomebindings, with new name x2goumount-session-gnome, adapted x2gognomebindings appropriately to this shift. Moved x2goversion script from x2goserver-extensions into x2goserver core package. Adapted created desktop icons in x2gomountdirs/x2goumount-session to latest changes in x2gognomebindings/x2golxdebindings (will be in a separate mail). Removal of ~/.x2go/C-<session_id> folders on server, in case -> x2goserver is not run in loglevel=debug (/etc/x2go/x2goserver.conf) -> the session has been terminated with x2goterminate-session -> x2goruncommand has run successfully no removal: on x2goruncommand failures or if debug loglevel is set in x2goserver.conf. x2gostartagent: pass an extra argument $USER to x2godesktopsharing, work on the x2godesktopsharing side around this is currently in progress (breaks cooperation of x2goserver with old x2godesktopsharing versions). Hi all, in a phone conference Heinz, Alex and I have talked about printing not being a very core feature of X2go Server. Esp. the x2goprint use is not needed on X2go Servers that are used without the print facility. Because of this I have made a proposal in X2go Git that move X2go client-side printing support back into a separate package (x2goserver-printing). Please take a look at the committed changes (x2goserver.git) and comment. Python-X2go and Nagle

Hello, What is the status of load balancing in X2go? Is it eventually an idea to use an load balancing system what is more generic? Someone experience with X2go? Hello list, I've made some small changes in cups-x2go to make it work with actual version of x2goserver. The changes are already in GIT. @Mike: the preinst script of obsolete package "x2goprint" has modified sudoers file to allow user x2goprint execute program "/usr/bin/x2goprint". This script has also added a user x2goprint to system: #useradd -s /bin/bash -d /var/spool/x2goprint/ -r x2goprint #mkdir /var/spool/x2goprint/ #chown x2goprint /var/spoo/x2goprint/ #chmod 700 /var/spool/x2goprint/ Now, this job user should do by himself. Hi all, today I have discovered and fixed a bug in pyhoca-gui that caused session profile problems in x2goclient after pyhoca-gui had been started on the same system for the same user (on Linux, both use the same config file: ~/.x2goclient/sessions). The symptoms were: o start pyhoca-gui o edit a session profile, change it from some desktop command to a non-desktop command o switch it back to a desktop command again o in pyhoca-gui you won't realize a problem o but: if you use this session profile in x2goclient, a desktop session will start in non-desktop mode: many individual windows are opened for the different desktop applications and applets I have just uploaded pyhoca-gui 0.1.0.8, which fixes this compatibility problem. The new pyhoca-gui version will also repair session profiles: edit a broken profile and save it again (from within pyhoca-gui). The session profile should be usable in x2goclient again, then. Hi devs, need patch feedback again... Please take a look here: http://paste.debian.net/129982/ The patch will change x2golistsessions & co. output in a way that a more internationally accepted date format is returned. The current date strings were (a) heavily Germanized (b) incomplete (lacking a period, the millenium, etc.) I looked into x2goclient code at there is no hint that these are used at all. In Python-X2go I neither uses these date hashes. Are the date strings (init_time, last_time are their names) parsed by any other X2go component that I do not know of??? E.g. x2goadmincenter et.al.??? The patch will be removed from paste.debian.net in 72h, so it would be great if devs could visit that page before. X2go Server and syslogging

hi all, today I have added syslog support to all X2go Server scripts. Currently, two log levels are used: debug -> mostly for db debugging info -> write to syslog whenever one of the X2go Server commands is called The default loglevel is ,,notice''. For this level, I plan to log if a session has been started/suspended/resumed/terminated. x2goserver package currently under construction...

Hi all, it is not recommended to install the x2goserver package from our nightly builds or our Git today. The package is currently under construction. Work should be finished by tonight (at the latest). Focus of work: x2goprint migration from using sudo to using a setgid wrapper. x2goclient build fails on current Debian sid.

Hi Alex, we have problems building x2goclient for Debian sid. I haven't followed changes in Debian sid recently, but I suppose it might be because the gcc maintainers have pulled in a new gcc-4.6 version from gcc SVN (refer to the gcc-4.6 changelog). Here is the error output that occurs during build. Can you fix this?
