Hi Stefan thanks - I've seen your message via the webfrontend earlier and thus decided to sign up. However, CCing me would have been a good idea, yes. I am flattered, but unfortunately not skilled enough to help you. The fix I send originated from a hour-long debugging session with two other people (non-OS X developers) - I am pretty sure I would have never caught such a stack overflow by myself. (Actually, I tried debugging via gdb at first and noticed the this pointer changed when going into the newly called channelLoop function, causing the program to crash - but was more than startled because this should have never had happened. Turns out, the stack was full and the first parameter of the function, i.e., "this" could not be pushed onto it, thus reading some random memory.) At the same time, I am happy to say that otherwise the x2go client (from git) is fully functioning on OS X with one little flaw - I have to test the same git version on Linux as well to confirm a OS X specific bug though. Oh yeah, and building nxproxy on OS X is not trivial but easily manageable with a few build system modifications. Hello again, thank you for your explanations about the firefox plugin. I did a simple search and found this link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/developers/docs/sdk/1.0/dev-guide/module-d… I don't how you are building the xpi plugin, but after reading a bit, seems that it is a pretty nice way of making a firefox extension based on local native libs. And I think it can be automated, too... Of course, you still need the windows machine to make a windows compatible plugin, so waitinf for your new server is a must, too :) If I can help, with this task, let me know, please. Hi all, as the traffic on the x2go-dev mailing list is currently growing enormously (which probably is partially my fault, as well ;-) ), this shows me that X2Go is in the discussion and also being used at your sites. That is very great. The dynamism is really lovely. However, also the development team and the number of contributors is growing. The number of incoming patches has measurably increased within the last two months. That is awesome and we are very happy to observe this. Meanwhile, this x2go-dev list is turning into a ,,real'' development list. We more and more discuss coding issues, send in / review patches, etc. So, I (and also other developers) have to become more strict when discussion threads run off-topic for a development list. Please consider your topic well that you post to x2go-dev, make sure it is a development issue, a bug, etc. However, issues that relate to using X2Go, fine-tuning your setup, etc.pp. please consider sending to the x2go-user mailing list. Hello Stefan, well, in real world I would never use LAN as a setting, even on LAN i would use WAN as the primary setting. We've benchmarked it, and without access to the benchmarks right now (you should find them in some article by Harald Milz in the german issue of the linux magazine some months ago) I can only say: You'd have it better that way. I would recommend you to use jpeg compression in combination with libjpegturbo, since this makes a real difference - especially on modern netbooks since their processor speed is not the best but in combination with the SSE-instruction sets which are used for libjpegturbo this makes a major performance boost (up to 3x in my lab tests). But: please tell us: what glitches do you suffer? What settings are you using? An upgrade to Gigabit will not help you much IMHO, since one session and 100 Mbit is far more than enough. x2godesktopsharing: Full Access not available for other users?

I am a bit confused re. the discrepancy between wiki and actual behaviour of x2godesktop sharing: x the wiki [1] reads that With the desktopsharing function of X2go you can have full-access the desktop from somebody else... x when I (USER_B) connect from a remote machine with x2goclient to "local desktop" (USER_A logged in on tty7 of x2goserver), the USER_A's session is shown in the lists of sessions available for sharing, however the button "Full Access" is greyed-out and cannot be clicked. Usernames with dashes causes errors?

Hello x2go people :) i have a server running Ubuntu 11.10 with an x2goserver installation, version 3.0.99.10-0~434~oneiric1, and it is running well and stable. We had some strange problems, though. We contacted a school, who would help us test the server under daily use, and made some test users for them, called "test-*their name*". When they, and i, tried to log into those users, the client would freeze, no error message or anything. On the server, the x2goagent would run amok, soaking up CPU power. x2goclient.exe - Saving session settings to registry

Hi List, is there any particular reason why x2goclient.exe will save session settings to the registry and will only use a "sessions" file when called with "--portable"? Using the "sessions" file is the default for Linux and AFAIK also for Mac OS X, so why the variation in x2goclient.exe? IMO, using the sessions file by default simplifies handling across client operating systems (especially as there is no import/export option between the "sessions" file on Windows and the registry). That's why saving to the registry should be dropped if nobody uses it, or made optional ("--save-to-registry" or somehing like that) if there are a few users that need it. So, to the Windows client users out there: Can anyone of you think of a reason that speaks against saving the settings in a file? Until we have a decision on that, my workaround is a link with the following destination: X:\x2goclient.exe --portable --home=%USERPROFILE% (where X: is a read-only network drive, and %USERPROFILE% is a reserved variable on Windows that contains the path to the user's home directory) BTW, Alex will soon implement a change so that the sessions file can be stored on the read-only network drive as well. -Stefan

Greetings, I use to play with x2go plugin some time ago, when it was available as a xpi firefox extension. I have visited your wiki page about the plugin, but as you know, it is not updated. Could you give me some hints how can I make a page where the user access it and download automatically the plugin, install it on the client machine ? This option is still available, right ? Thank you

Hi everyone, any recommendations on what settings I should use in X2go-Client when the server is on the same LAN as the clients, and I want to watch youtube (with Pulseaudio sound) via X2Go? The default settings already look (and sound) promising, but it seems there are a few glitches... and I'm wondering if they are real bugs or just side effects of a less-than-ideal session setting. I'm currently using a 100MBit switched LAN, with the option to upgrade to 1 GBit LAN if that would make a major difference. -Stefan

Traffic shaping nightmare - missing SSH TOS bits

Hello, all. I've been working on a project to implement traffic shaping to conform to 95th percentile billing including our X2Go virtual desktops. One of the challenges is prioritizing the interactive X2Go traffic (screen, keyboard, mouse) differently from bulk traffic like local share transfers, printing, and possibly sound. I thought this would be trivial because of the SSH transport since SSH sets the minimize-delay bit for interactive traffic and the maximize-throughput bit for bulk transfers. Thus we could distinguish the packets by looking at the TOS bits. This is how the default Linux pfifo_fast qdisc does it anyway. I took a packet trace just to confirm it and, to my horror, I see that we are not setting any of the TOS bits and thus not prioritizing interactive traffic even with the default traffic shaping. I'm guessing this is a casualty of moving to libssh. Is there any way to set the TOS bits for interactive to 0x10, bulk to 0x08 as it is in OpenSSH?. It would be really nice if sound could be configured either way according the the administrator's preference. Unfortunately, I did not see anything in the libssh documentation to show how to do this although I do not claim to understand it. This is a critical issue for any WAN based deployments like ours. Font colour in x2goclient in case of dark system theme

Hello, the x2goclient has hardcoded light appearance for the various widgets (main window, session list, login window, progress of logging in), which does not work well with dark system theme: the white font is not distinquishable from the background. I have checked the Qt documentation and there seems to be more ways on how to accomplish that. So far, I have used three various methods: labelname->setStyleSheet("QLabel { color : black; }"); or cpal.setColor ( QPalette::Text, Qt::black); or QString fonttemplate=("<font color='black'>%1</font>"); nameLabel->setTextFormat ( Qt::RichText ); nameLabel->setText ( fonttemplate.arg( text ) ); which kind of works, though it requires to be written repeatedly throughout the code (sessionbutton.cpp, onmainwindow.cpp, onmainwindow_part4.cpp) for individual widgets and so far I am not able to use a single approach for all widget types (QLabel, QMenu, QPushButton, etc.). The first method seems to be the most general and simplest, however. Is there a way to set application-wide font colour for anything that appears in the widgets, but not in app menu and other windows (Settings, Session Settings, etc.), because these are styled with the system-wide dark theme? Where in the code? P.S. Sorry for possibly stupid question, but since I am not a coder, it is rather a trial & error approach and a lot of googling... I18n - how to do it

X-Posting to i18n and dev (Please make sure we continue this) Hi there, as i18n is getting more dynamic at the moment, I remembered our discussion from September last year. One of the things we looked at was www.transifex.net. I think we should reconsider looking at this, as it will allow to translate x2go without the need of using git, but using a web interface. And they have an API, as well as a simple client, so we can script the up- and download of translation files. As it is just used as a tool for translation, we take no risks. New major distribution builds available for X2go

Hi all, as announced previously I have good news: We have a very large set of packages for the following distributions: - openSUSE 12.1 & Factory (12.2) - Fedora 15 - Fedora 16 And now we can say x2go is enterprise-ready: - SLES 11 - RHEL 5 - RHEL 6 At this point I would like to thank Jan Engelhardt - Without him this wouldn't had been possible in such a short period of time. All distributions have been built to only depend on what is included within the base distro packages. We are _not_ amused by the behaviour like Red Hat works with extended packages they don't want to give support for (like by calling EPEL "a well-maintained" repository [1]). We also must say, that the "modern" versions have been a lot "easier" than the rest, just because of the dependency stuff. All packages have been verified through all kind of (and sometimes also super weird stict) brpchecks and rpmlint checks, so the package format should be fine with about any distro which takes care of clean buildroot-based package building. There has been a lot of effort to generalize the packages to have just one single SPEC-file for on package on all distros. This resulted in various patches we kindly request to get upstream, as we really think these patches are a great enhancement. As a result of what we had as a code base and the build requirements we were not able to provide x2goplasmabindings for the older (enterprise) distributions, for example. Now about what's coming next: - Please test, test, test. [PATCH] xauth file location mismatch in x2gostartagent

Hello, the /usr/bin/x2gostartagent script does not sufficiently specify the location of $XAUTHORITY file for the xauth command, while the command line for starting x2goagent refers to a specific location $HOME/.Xauthority. Usually, this works, because if nothing is specified on the command line for xauth and the $XAUTHORITY variable is not defined, it falls back to $HOME/.Xauthority. Nonetheless, recent GDM versions set XAUTHORITY to /var/run/gdm/auth-for-$USER-blabla/database. As a result, when opening a shadow session as another user, /usr/bin/x2gostartagent adds the cookie to $XAUTHORITY (/var/run/gdm...) and then starts x2goagent -auth $HOME/.Xauthority, which fails obviously. The attached patch removes the -f $HOME/.Xauthority parameter from the x2goagent command line to resolve the problem. It also removes a redundant '-S' parameter (there is already $SESSION_TYPE there). Can users of other distributions or display managers test if it does not break something else? Just noticed this in the systray icon's pull-down menu: "Wiederhestellen" should be "Wiederhe_r_stellen". Also, in Sitzungsvoreinstellungen/Neue Sitzung/Sitzung/Server: "SSH Port" should be "SSH-Port" "RSA/DSA Schlüssel verwenden" should be "RSA-/DSA-Schlüssel verwenden" In Sitzungsvoreinstellungen/Neue Sitzung/Einstellungen: "Benutze Port Weiterleitung"[...] should be "Benutze Port-Weiterleitung". "DPI Auflösung festlegen" should be "DPI-Auflösung festlegen" or "Auflösung festlegen (in DPI)" And in Sitzungsvoreinstellungen/Neue Sitzung/freigegebene Ordner: "Benutze SSH Port Weiterleitung"[...] should be "Benutze SSH-Port-Weiterleitung". "Desktopverknüpfung erzeugen" shows a message containing the string "ohne das x2goclient". I believe this contains two errors, for one, "das" should be "dass", and the commonly accepted name for the client isn't written in all lowercase, IIRC. You will probably want to call it "X2Goclient", "X2GoClient" or "X2Go-Client". This seems to be an inconsistency in the entire client, though (the title bar says "X2Go client", the first item in the "Help" menu says "X2GO Client", clicking on it shows a message containing "the string X2Go Client"). The same message notes that you can use a GPG key or a GPG smartcard to authenticate when using "hidden mode". It does not mention the SSH public key/ssh-agent methods, even though they work just as well. Or maybe you meant that while calling it a GPG key in the message (I've never used GPG-based authentication, so I'm not sure if it requires a smartcard or not)? Anyways - it should be written as "GPG-Smartcard" and "GPG-Schlüssel" or "SSH-Schlüssel" (depending on which one you meant). Another typo in the same message: "Wollen SIe" should be "Wollen Sie". The same SIe-Sie issue is in the Help/About X2GO Client dialog. Problem with X2Go and VMWare Tools

Hi. I've been troubleshooting a weird problem with X2Go for a while, when connecting to Gnome sessions in virtual machines the top and bottom panels are displayed but the desktop/background never shows up and the mouse pointer never stops spinning. It's like the Gnome session startup reaches 99% and then just waits forever for something. It turns out it's related to VMWare Tools. I use VMWare Hypervisor (ESXi) 5, I can't say if the problem started when I upgraded from ESXi 4 to 5, but it's fairly recent. I discovered that there are two instances of vmtoolsd running, the process list looks something like this when the X2Go session reaches "wait forever" state: root@labblinux:~# ps auxw | grep vmware dali 12906 1.4 1.4 174604 14588 ? Starting a Gnome session locally on the virtual machine console successfully finishes. I've tried using xrdp instead of X2Go and had no problems starting sessions, both using X11rdp and X11vnc on the server side. There's only one vmtoolsd running unless it's a X2Go session. I've unsuccessfully tried to figure out what the root cause is. It seems related to X2Go login/startup, somehow vmtoolsd starts twice and there's a conflict blocking Gnome startup. I did however find a workaround; uninstall VMWare Tools and install the open-vm-tools package from the Debian repository (contrib has to be added). No problems with X2Go so far and VMWare seems happy with the open source tools (Shutdown/Restart Guest is available in vSphere Client). I posted this to both x2go-user and x2go-dev for informational purposes. Maybe a wiki page would be the best place for this info? The wiki is however in a sad state and needs some serious cleanup. I personally don't think the template used is aesthetically pleasing and would prefer the default template or Arctic template which I've used extensively in all my DokuWiki installs. Cheers, Daniel

X2Go bindings for Xfce and others

Hello, I have modified the existing LXDE bindings for X2Go so that it works with Xfce. I did some further modifications: x command to open folder is "xdg-open" x added generic-icon name to MIME type ("folder-remote") As far as I understand the X2Go scripts, they check for GNOME/KDE/LXDE and add the corresponding letters to sshfs-disk-$DE MIME type. If none of the listed DEs is detected, the MIME type remains simply sshfs-disk. Since xdg-open and generic-icon name is general enough, it should work with other DE than Xfce, nonetheless, it has not been tested yet. I also updated the debian/ files but since I am on Arch Linux, I could not test the packaging process. P.S. I am aware about the plans for a unified approach for all DEs, which should make the gnome/kde/lxdebindings obsolete. So this is just a temporary solution. Feature Request: update ssh public key fingerprint from within x2goclient

Hi list, after swapping a server and trying to connect to it with X2Go, x2goclient greets me with --------------------------- Authentification failed --------------------------- Host key for server changed. It is now: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx For security reasons, connection will be stopped --------------------------- OK --------------------------- In the same situation, the NX client would ask if the key should be updated. I can see that offering such a direct option is a good idea from a usability viewpoint, but a bad one from a security viewpoint, as users tend to click yes/allow on every popup they see. The current approach of x2goclient is the total opposite. A moderately experienced Linux user might figure out that ssh-keygen -R <hostip> will help, but to a Windows user, this will be an unsolvable mystery. I would like to suggest adding an option to remove/update the key from within the X2Go-Client. Hi Alex, I noticed that x2goclient.exe can be called with --portable to make it use a session file rather than Windows registry entries. Is it possible to specify the location of the session file? Is there a way to export/import sessions from the registry to a sessions file and back? Is there any kind of documentation as to which command line options are available *specifically with the Windows x2go client*? By the way, the message that is shown after "x2goclient.exe --help" is too large to fit on my screen. It doesn't have scroll bars, and there's no way to resize that window, either. I have to use Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C to copy the message to the clipboard, then hit space to "click" the OK button that is outside of my screen, then paste the clipboard content into a text editor if I want to read all of it... Also, is it possible to connect without a session file/registry entry, by specifying all required parameters on the command line? if so, what are the minimum required parameters for that? Whenever I try to pass parameters, x2goclient.exe simply returns me to the command line. :-( The only parameters that seem to cause a response are "--help", "--maximize" and "--hide"... -Stefan

Hi, unfortunately on x2go-users nobody was able to answer this question, maybe here is anybody who knows how to fix this: I am testing x2go - looks like a very good alternative to other solutions! However, I see that (only) when I am logged in via x2goclient I have an x2goagent process listening on the server on all network interfaces on port 6050 - I would feel better if this software did only listen on 127.0.0.1, if this is technically possible. I did not found any hint on a "listen 127.0.0.1" configuration item and where to put it, if existing - how can I make x2goagent NOT listen on a public network interface? Hi Oliver, Milan, Please build x2goagent from nx-libs.git. Tarballs are available here: http://code.x2go.org/releases/source/nx-libs the symlink... -------------- nx-libs aims at being a replacement for nxagent (as being used with FreeNX, for example) whilst also providing our x2goagent. x2goagent is nothing more than a branded nxagent. Originally, Alex forked NX libs and nxagent for achieving the branding. However, we recently patched some code into original NX code that makes it now possible for nxagent to recognize under what name the agent is launched. If that name is x2goagent the X2Go branding is turned on, otherwise no branding. the wrapper script... --------------------- nx-libs ships with its own X11 library files (libnx-x11, we call the package for Debian). With your distro's X libraries nxagent/x2goagent will probably fail to run or it will at least be really unstable. You have to install NX libs to some non-default library path (e.g. /usr/lib/nx) and make sure that nxagent/x2goagent finds only those (by tweaking LD_LIBRARY_PATH) and _not_ the distro's X11 libs. Session Crash

Hi All, I know the session crashing issue on debian has been a work in progress for a while now. I was just wondering if any of releases in the non-stable PPA / repo were less likely to crash? I understand this is difficult and I don't have any expectations of it being fixed it a fixed amount of time. I just havne't had time to follow the mailing list every day so I'm not sure what the current state is. Thank you for the great software. Andrew

Hello, I get Segmentation fault when I right-click on x2godesktopsharing icon in the system tray and choose "Activate Desktop Sharing". (Arch Linux.) I tried adding "CONFIG = qt debug" line to x2godesktopsharing.pro file, then $ qmake x2godesktopsharing.pro $ make and compilation fails pretty quickly. Hello, find attached the following patches for bin/x2goumount-session script: 0001: the DESKTOP file for shares of /cygwin/C:/some/path got not removed due to redundant "/cygwin/" string. 0002: the $HOME/media or $HOME/media/${USER}_media symlink got not removed after session end. 0003: the /tmp/${USER}_media mount points tree got not removed after session end. I am not sure about the latter two patches - could they create some problems in case the user has two paralel sessions active? (Can it even happen?) Will you please review and possibly commit to git? Problem Using Cloned Accounts

Hi All: We're trying to see if we can get x2go to work on cloned accounts or ones we create via bash on an Ubuntu server. FYI - we can start x2go sessions successfully if we create a new user "the normal way" (i.e., by hand using the GUI), create the SSH keys and move them between client (windows) and server. When we try, however, to create a new user account on the server "programmatically" (either brand new or cloned), we consistently get an error which happens regardless of the technique we use. As best we can tell, the cloned or programmatically created accounts function fine and as we'd expect except when we try to connect via x2go. For example, as root we create an account with "useradd - d /home/<newusername> -m --skel /etc/skel <newusername> (we've also tried to use the same command but clone an account that works with x2go, and have tried a range of other bash "create/clone" code). The connection is made, we see the black screen with "X2GO" and then the screen goes black and stays that way. Is this the same problem we've seen on some of the "black screen" posts? When we quit, we get an error message: Connection failed head: cannot open /home/<username>/.x2go/C-XXXXXXXXXXX_stDGNOME-dp32/cmdoutput' for reading: No such file or directory sed: -e expression #1, char 4: unterminated 's' command cat: >From reading the error message, it looks like somehow a "cmdoutput" file or folder is missing which we don't fine on the working account, so maybe it's written out on the fly. Is this a permissions issue? We think we are doing everything "identically" with the exception of how we are creating the account (e.g., how we create the ssh keys, copy the id_dsa.pub in authorized keys, add the new user to sshd_config, restart ssh). We've tried comparing the permissions in the two accounts, but are not sure if that is even the issue. We've checked in our user settings via the GUI and none of the users we've added --either programmatically or through the GUI--are checked in the x2go group though all are listed there and it doesn't seem to matter if we check them. When we create a new user/account "programmatically", would this cause problems with the x2go set up for that account? Any help appreciated! Ted

Dear all, The X2Go Project it proud to announce a couple of new X2Go component releases: - x2goserver (3.0.99.10) - x2goclient (3.99.0.6) - x2gothinclient (1.0.1.5) - nx-libs incl. x2goagent (3.5.0.9) All new packages will be available in our stable repositories (Debian, Ubuntu) within the next 24h. The windows version of x2goclient will probably be available tomorrow, as well. For x2goserver and x2goclient these releases will be the last releases in the 3.0.99.x series (x2goserver) and 3.99.0.x series (x2goclient). Today Oleksandr Shneyder has found a conceptual bug in the X2Go session hand shake that now is already fixed in the latest development code. To denote this change in session handshake protocol, minor version numbers will be raised for the next releases of those projects: - x2goserver, next release will be 3.1.0.0 - x2goclient, next release will be 3.99.1.0 Older clients will be fully compatible with newer servers (and vice versa). The fix addresses a session resume failure that occurred every once in a while (quite rare, but annoying).
