New Bug/Issue with X2Go - NOT related to latest client release

Situation: Client: Windows 7 (32-Bit), German X2Go Client versions tested: http://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-win32/x2goclient/x2goclient-3.99.2.1-r… (latest) http://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-win32/x2goclient/x2goclient-3.99.2.0-r… (old) Server: Debian Squeeze, 32-Bit, with additional repositories for newer iceweasel and icedove releases: sources.list-snippet: # Ice*-ESR deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports iceweasel-esr deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports icedove-esr Affected Iceweasel Version: 10.0.3 (ESR) Shockwave Flash: File: libflashplayer.so Version: Shockwave Flash 11.1 r102 Problem description: When opening two tabs in Iceweasel, and accessing Youtube in one, the rectangle containing the video player/flash applet is carried over to the new tab, where it blocks the view. This does *not* happen with the Iceweasel version from stock Debian Squeeze. This *does* happen with both X2Go client versions listed above. Is anybody out there running Iceweasel 10.0.3 (ESR) with the above-mentioned flash version on a "real" display screen (i.e. a Linux computer hooked up to a physical display, not via X2Go)? If so, could you please check if you're experiencing the issue as well: 1) On the real display screen? 2) Via X2Go? I'm curious if this is a bug in Iceweasel or in X2Go. -Stefan

X2go connection problem to a Vserver

To Whom It May Concern: We are trying to get x2go to work with a Vserver instance but cannot connect. We've done some looking at x2go posts into the error, but we're not sure the responses apply to using Vserver and are still looking for some help (apologies if we should have been able to find this on our own). The error is first: "X2go-51 The remote proxy closed the connection while negotiating the session. This may be due to the wrong authentication credentials passed to the server." The window includes an "OK" button. If we press the OK button, we get to the x2go login screen where you can enter a password...if we enter the password, we get: "Error Connection failed channel_open_session failed - Writing packet: error on socket (or connection closed): Broken pipe." On the client, in the "sessions" file we see: Loop: PANIC! The remote NX Proxy closed the connection. Loop: PANIC! Failure negotiating the session in stage '7'. Loop: PANIC! Wrong version or invalid session authentication cookie. In both the client "options" file, the cookie looks to be the same as the cookie in the server FYI - we can ping the Vserver instance, and we can ssh into the Vserver successfully, ping 8.8.8.8 from there etc. Also, initially when this wouldn't work, we though maybe we had issues with how we had set up desktops in the Vserver (which is still possible: we're using gnome, gdm) but when we spun up another Vserver and set up VNC, it serves the desktop correctly so at first blush this seems to be a networking/ports/firewall/sshd/routing type of issue. However, we're still having trouble getting a regular X session to run over SSH.....but are assuming at the moment (possibly incorrectly) that the X2go errors we're getting are an issue on their own, possibly in addition to running an X session on a Vserver. ...And...at various points (though not on the current server instances), we set up x2go on the host and could connect to that over our LAN. Again, the current instances only have x2go running on the Vserver guest. SETUP 1) OpenSsh-Server We have openssh-server running only on the Vserver guest (we tried having it on the host too, but that didn't seem to matter). We are using port 22. We've tried using a ListenAddress xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx which is the IP of the host, but this doesn't seem to matter. 2) X2go Likewise X2go server is only installed on the Vserver instance (though again we tried it on both the host and guest with no differences we could see). We set up x2go on Ubuntu 10.4 server (both host and guest)using: apt-get install python-software-properties add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable apt-get update apt-get install -y x2goserver apt-get install -y x2goserver-extensions 2) We made sure from a client that we can successfully ssh. Again, this may not mean anything, but we can VNC to the guest desktop successfully. 3) We try x2go from a linux client (Ubuntu 10.10, x2go version 3.99.1.1) and get the errors described above. Q: are we using too old a client version? Q: is this a firewall issue - we don't have iptables or ufw set up Q: is this a matter of changing entries in hosts, hostname, network/interfaces, etc on the Vserver and/or host? FYI some time back Mike Garbriel responded to one of our inquires (thanks Mike) on using chroot (http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.x2go.devel/3720) that mentions (we're assuming for the sake of our example that using port 22 in sshd_config meet this suggestion): If you work with pure chroots then install x2goserver into each chroot. Configure the chroot's SSH daemon to listen on a specific SSH port. So at the end you have chroot-1 - <port-1> chroot-2 - <port-2> Setup up X2Go client to connect to your host, for chroot-1 choose <port-1> in your X2Go client configuration, <port-2> for chroot-2, etc. Help appreciated! Hi! I am working on a X2go client for Android/iOS the client gui is done, i am working on the libraries for ARM under android and iOS. i took the x2goplugin (the little´s standalone x2goclient) as base for my development. it requires this files: libx2go.so libXcomp.so libXcomp.so.3 libXcomp.so.3.4.0 nxproxy sftp-server sshd sftp-server and sshd are done (not exactly rocket science), but i need to build the others, for libXcomp.so in www.nomachine.com/sources.php i can download a pack of source code. ¿will it work with x2go? ¿is it different? where can i download the official x2go source for those files? about libx2go.so ¿wich source package provides it? Thanks in advance for any help. (All the work i am doing will be documented so, other people can get working x2goclients and when i get my client finished i will be glad of make it available for all x2gousers). Problems with AltGr

Hi, I use x2goclient to connect to a x2goserver, both as installed by gentoo linux. I believe the gentoo versions are "special" in the sense that it uses the NoMachine's version of the nxagent. Now when I connect and I press AltGr+<, then the result should be the character | but the actual result is < The problem also occurs with the @ character, which is normally obtained by pressing AltGr+@, but in just results q instead of @. Any ideas? The session settings seem to be OK. It doesn't matter whether I tell x2goclient to keep keyboard settings or whether I explicitly configure de layout. Server-side is nx-3.5.0.14 (includes nxagent) x2goserver-3.1.1.3 Client-side is net-misc/nx-3.5.0.14 x2goclient-3.99.2.1 Regards, Sven Köhler

IPv6 and IPv4

Hi all! I was using x2go on my notebook on a IPv6 enabled network and the x2goserver also has v6 connectivity. Everything went fine so far, however when I am in an IPv4 only network (no v6 default route, only link-local address) x2go to the same server fails with "Connection timed out" while I am able to connect to the x2goserver flawlessly via ssh over IPv4. If I start the local v6tunnel on my notebook connecting to the x2goserver works again. Regards Christoph

Suspend-To-DISK/RAM and x2goclient

Hi all! Currently when I suspend my Desktop while a x2goclient is running and has a active session I'll get a unresponsive X window after resume the computer. Would be really cool if x2go would -- after detecting the ssh session is gone -- try to reconnect to the same session so I can leave my x2go applications just open when doing suspend/resume. Fullscreen RDP sessions with X2Go

Hi John (Sullivan), I currently try to provide Windows 2008 Terminal Services through X2Go and I stumbled over an issue I was not aware of. In fullscreen mode the X2Go client-side does not get a keyboard grab on the rdesktop session window. I can move+click with the mouse, I can view the rdesktop login screen, but I cannot type. This is with pyhoca-gui and x2goclient. The problem does not occur with rdesktop running in a Window (rootless, but not fullscreen). I then hacked PyHoca-GUI a little and launched rdesktop (-f) not as a rootless application (which is the default), but inside an agent desktop session (type "D"). Then the keyboard grab is there. Have you an idea on this? I know that you provide RDP session through X2Go quite often. Cut & Paste between 2 Ubuntu servers

Hi! I have this problem since a long time: cut & paste in the x2goclient itself (same machine to same machine) works perfectly. But to get the clipboard-stuff out of the x2goclient (and vice versa) to the main machine is not possible. Since 1 week I got precise pangolin (12.04) on both of my machines, they have these packages: dpkg -l|grep x2go ii python-x2go 0.2.0.5-0~825~precise1 Python module for X2Go client support ii x2goagent 2:3.5.0.13-0~241~precise1 X2Go agent ii x2goclient 3.99.2.1-0~229~precise1 X2Go Client application (Qt4) ii x2godesktopsharing 3.0.1.4-0~68~precise1 share X2go desktops with other users (via shadow sessions) ii x2goserver 3.1.1.1-0~549~precise1 X2Go server daemon scripts ii x2goserver-extensions 3.1.1.1-0~549~precise1 X2Go server daemon scripts (extensions) The packages are coming from the ubuntu-PPA http://ppa.launchpad.net/x2go/stable/ubuntu I guess this is up2date? But the problem stays. It's a full desktop access. Do you need more informations? Thanx, Udo

I have just prepared a bugfix release 3.1.1.3 that should re-enable client-side printing (the Debian packages are already available, Ubuntu packages will follow in the next 24h). New X2Go releases: pyhoca-gui, python-x2go, x2gognomebindings

Dear all, The X2Go Project is proud to announce another X2Go component releases: - x2goserver (3.1.1.2) The new X2Go server packages will be available in our stable repositories (Debian, Ubuntu) within the next 24h. This release fixes several issues: (1) x2gocleansessions was broken quite a bit. Crashes occurred when sessions have been found running and x2gocleansessions tried to shut them down. Also the occuring zombie processes caused by x2gocleansessions and observed by some of you should now be gone. (2) With PostgreSQL as session db backend, the display would increment and increment and increment and... (3) Fixes session startup failures with pam_tmpdir.so being in use for user sessions. (4) Mount client-side shares to /tmp/.x2go-<user>/{media,spool,mimebox}. So we reduced this to one location. (5) NX session.log get now written to /tmp/.x2go-<user>/<session.log>. A couple of applications had lost their window decorations if the server is Debian wheezy / Ubuntu maverick or newer. Mostly affected were Qt applications. @FreeNX developers: Please note, this bug is also present in current FreeNX nx-X11 code (as found on Launchpad). Dear all, due to the great contribution of Jim Burnes we are able to bump an unscheduled bugfix release of NX (redistributed) aka x2goagent that fixes recently observed crashes of X2Go occuring on systems that had been upgraded to libcairo >= 1.12.1. X2GoServer on Lubuntu 12.04

I have noted the following issues so far when using an X2Go Session with Lubuntu 12.04 AMD64 (uses LXDE): The selected theme is ignored. Only the default theme is used (Clearlooks in this case). When I try to use Openbox to change the them to the theme I want (Lubuntu-default) I get an error "an error occurred while saving the config file '/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml'. Certain applications do not appear in the LXDE application menu. Things like the Synaptic Package Manager for example. It's like the user does not have proper access permissions when logged in via an X2Go session. Any ideas?

Removal of EsounD support

Hi all, I'm thinking about removing ESD support from x2goclient altogether. During my recent deep changes to the PulseAudio integration for X2goclient on both Windows and Mac OS X, I came across the ESD sound support. On Windows, ESD was supported through the PulseAudio wrapper, while OS X was totally broken anyway. Testing ESD support proves to be difficult, and I'm thinking about removing it completely. Most Linux distributions have already removed esd (and tools) from their repo, or rather replaced it by the PulseAudio esd compat layer. That's especially true for Ubuntu, but also Debian Testing and Unstable (Debian Stable still has esd for x86 and amd64 arches, but this will be dropped in favor of PulseAudio in the upcoming release.) That said, I'd like to know whether users are still using esd or not. I wouldn't feel comfortable removing a feature still in use. Please report, if you find the time. Best regards, Mihai

Hi Alex, hi all, I have today completely ,,reloaded'' pinentry-x2go. As I am currently pushing things to Debian I have already released the version with today's code cleanup under 0.7.5.2. Reason was: there has been so much cruft in the package (unused code) that it would not have been accepted as is by Debian FTP masters. This is now different. Experiences with x2goserver on Wheezy

Hello, Installing X2goserver on Wheezy works fine. But when I start a session from a client with Squeeze to a server with Wheezy and Gnome, I see short a black "X2go" window, but after that the session is gone. Dear all, The X2Go Project is proud to announce a couple of new X2Go component releases: - x2goclient (3.99.2.1) - pyhoca-gui (0.2.0.0) - pyhoca-cli (0.2.0.1) - python-x2go (0.2.0.3) All new packages will be available in our stable repositories (Debian, Ubuntu) within the next 24h. The Mac OS version of x2goclient will be available within the next couple of days, the Windows client takes a little more time due to heavy workload on the developers' side. The NX (redistributed) code tree has received a fix for the main Makefile. Also a patch for building on Mac OS X 10.5 has been included, plus an X2Go related patch by Oleksandr. On top of that, we have fixed installation of libnx-x11 (Debian package) on 64-bit systems with multi-arch support (i.e. Debian wheezy+sid). X2GoClient and X2Go TCE have received some improvements, too. The shutdown button is now fully implemented witin X2GoClient, the x2gothinshutdown package has been dropped. occurrence of sluggishness in X2Go

Hi, just for the record and to let people know about current work focus... People (esp. John) have reported occurrences of a very sluggish behaviour of various applications when run in X2Go sessions. We developers can now confirm this. Ubuntu users reported this earlier, Debian user can now also experience such a sluggishness. Reproduce on Debian: * add squeeze-backports archive to your system * install iceweasel (esr version) This will drag in a libcairo from squeeze backports that is very probably the cause for making some applications very slow within X2Go sessions. Libcairo is used in all GTK applications and is a layer between GTK and the rendering backend (X11, OpenGL, ...). With some recent version of libcairo the sluggishness got introduced... @John: so it is not Nagle, I guess... Compare: launch gnome-terminal (uses libcairo) on such a system and xterm (uses direct X11 rendering). Now create some output on standard out and then scroll back the shell history... Alex has become aware of this on Linux Day Berlin and he has put it on his list with high priority to find a solution/workaround for that. Hi. At first, thank you for extremely quick answer. If this issue is known, then it may be good to add 'Conflicts: libcairo (>= 1.12)' to debian/control file of main version of x2goagent. It could save some hair of new users from becoming gray. I've tried both of your pieces of advice. On 32bit server i've downgraded libcairo to 1.8 (it would be better to have 1.10 but it's available in repo no more) and also had to downgrade everything that depends on it. After that both nxserver and x2goserver work good. If i have time i'll also try newer nxserver (i really enjoy their lightweight Win32 client), although i've heard that freenx lacks support and tends to become abandoned. On 64bit server i've updated x2go server apps to wheezy/heuler versions and it also works now. lxterminal and chromium seems to be slow (although, chromium via `ssh -X' never worked fast; lxterminal scrolls slowly but it's not dramatically slow) and icedove doesn't seem to be slow at all. Although, issue about problems with resuming is actual: both lxterminal and icedove lose all text labels and cannot show any text (see attached screenshot of menu ) until i close them and open again (minimize + restore or resize doesn't help). One more thing, about exporting client dirs to x2go session: it works only when i set (in x2goclient session settings) local encoding to windows-1251, but my OS and FS supports and uses unicode, does anybody work on fixing such support in x2goclient? Also even when I set local encoding to cp1251, on server side I see that dots from the beginning of filenames (yes, I have folders with names like .ssh, files .bashrc, etc) are stripped. That doesn't seem to be correct behavior. Thanks again for your answer, also I hope that I can help in improving x2go project too.

Hi all, just as a quick status message: I'm currently working on integrating PulseAudio into the OS X client and it looks good so far. PA will be started as soon as the client launches and killed on terminate... well, actually is. A quick test on 10.5 and 10.6 boxes show that the OS X version of PA works reasonably fine (at least it starts up and can play a sample WAVE file, so I call it a success.) Will try implementing PA session stuff tomorrow and do a few tests with it. We'll see, fingers crossed... Best regards, Mihai

Segfault issue with x2goserver.

Good daytime for everyone. Since 2010 I've been using nxserver (freenx-0.7.3 + nxserver-3.4.0, installed into /opt/NX ) on my Debian6 32-bit server ( currently kernel 2.6.32-45, here is my /etc/apt/sources.list: http://pastebin.ca/2156639 ). I didn't use is for about 2-3 months and today I found that when I try to connect to my server, it draws some initial graphics and then connection interrupts. In dmesg i see: [4573539.498493] nxagent[5736]: segfault at 0 ip 080e3f03 sp bf9e6900 error 4 in nxagent[8048000+438000] [4573581.591042] nxagent[6371]: segfault at 0 ip 080e3f03 sp bf9a1d90 error 4 in nxagent[8048000+438000] ... (same EIP each time) I've thought that some update of X11 libs lead it to broke and remembered that some some time ago in Debian repos appeared some NX libs, so i've looked what depends on them. So, i've found x2goserver. I've installed it ( as it described here: http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/wiki:x2go-repository-debian ), installed x2goclient on my Win32 notebook but when i try to connect, i see the same thing: X client application (i use openbox+lxpanel there) do some requests, in ~/.xsession-errors i can see smth like: XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0" after 1070 requests (1070 known processed) with 0 events remaining. and then no data comes to client. In dmesg i see: [4578741.547603] x2goagent[18222]: segfault at 0 ip 080e87b1 sp bfe1afd0 error 4 in nxagent[8048000+460000] [4578947.507016] x2goagent[20046]: segfault at 0 ip 080e87b1 sp bfbf80c0 error 4 in nxagent[8048000+460000] ... (same EIP each time) I've used objdump and found that there program tries to read byte from pointer (and doesn't check that it's not NULL) but there are no debugging symbols, so i even don't catch what function is it. Then i've tried installing x2goserver to my new Debian6 64bit server (it's almost pure Debian installation) but when i try to connect to it, the only application that works is fluxbox, if I try to start anything like lxterminal, x2goagent fails at the code that looks very similar to 32bit variant: [794878.270330] x2goagent[29210]: segfault at 0 ip 00000000004a9bb0 sp 00007fff41ee6f60 error 4 in nxagent[400000+4f7000] [795053.995418] x2goagent[30256]: segfault at 0 ip 00000000004a9bb0 sp 00007fff8ae42160 error 4 in nxagent[400000+4f7000] If anyone cares, i'll try to send as much additional info as I can, just tell what are you interested in. Hi all, over the weekend I have worked a lot on the keyboard setup within X2Go sessions. The server now offers three modes for configuring the session's keyboard settings: 1. no change via client -> configure your keyboard setup through desktop tools, e.g. gnome-keyboard-properties 2. set model and layout through x2goclient -> use -type parameter of nxagent/x2goagent to set the keyboard model/type -> x2goclient + pyhoca-gui run setxkbmap -layout <layout> after session startup -> pyhoca-gui additionally runs setxkbmap -variant <variant> after session startup (new session profile: ,,variant''). ---> RECOMMENDED for x2goclient 3. NEW: autodetect the client-side keyboard layout through NX -> set the keyboard model/type to ,,auto'' (instead of pc104/us etc.) -> nxagent will create a file ~/.x2go/<session>/keyboard with all client-side keyboard settings -> x2goruncommand and x2goresume-session will call a new script: called x2gosetkeyboard -> x2gosetkeyboard will reset the keyboard settings and set all settings as found in the keyboard file To test this (third) new feature, you only have to install the x2goserver packages from either of the nightly repositories. NX already has this feature since 2:3.5.0.12 (actually earlier, but the named version is currently in our main repositories). With x2goclient you have to set the keyboard type/model to auto and leave the layout field empty. With PyHoca-GUI (from the nightly builds) you have to set the keyboard type/model to auto and leave the fields layout and variant empty. Both applications will have proper GUI elements to configure this more handily in the near future. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

Hi, with the latest changes, x2goclient will also run on Mac OS X 10.4. However, it will not be officially supported. While x2go is generally "use at own risk", this one is "use at own risk and don't expect it to work properly." Mac OS 10.4 is really old and unsupported even by Apple Inc. - not even with security updates. The X11 server version bundled with 10.4 is also old and known to cause color problems. The X11 server is not meant to be updated by users in an easy and convenient way, or at all. X11 server releases for 10.5 can't be installed on 10.4. Generally, starting an X11 application on 10.5 and higher will automatically launch the X11 server, if installed. This is due to structural changes in X11 integration implemented by Apple. On user login, an environmental variable called "$DISPLAY" is set and points to a UNIX socket monitored by the system daemon launchd. Whenever something tries to connect to this socket, the X11 binary is started. This is not true for 10.4. On those systems, $DISPLAY is not automatically set and thus not available from the initial environment. Starting X11 manually will spawn an xterm instance with this env. var. set. From this terminal application, other X11 applications could be launched just fine. However, non-child-processes still won't be able to communicate with the X11 server. Also, there is no easy way to know if an X11 server is already running, and if it is, on which socket it's listening. My first idea was to implement some kind of autodetection/probing for X11 sockets and connect to them in order to determine whether they work or not. This said, at the same time valid security concerns were raised. Connecting to unknown sockets is potentially dangerous, and as the place those sockets are placed in is world-writable, anyone could put a prepared socket in there. For obvious reasons, I dismissed this idea. Instead, I am now probing for a free display number and launching a separate X11 server instance whenever it is needed. Existing instances/sockets won't be re-used. This works fine, but obviously means that for every session a separate X11 server is launched and the user has to clean up those instances by hand (luckily each instance is shown as a normal application, so terminating those processes is not a problem at all.) This seemed like the safest, fastest and easiest way to go. Another way would be searching the currently running processes for X11 and examining the open files to find the socket, but this is way more complicated and not really worth the effort. Aside from that, the X11 server is listening for TCP connections by default and there is no way/option to turn this behavior off, unlike in 10.5 and higher. While the X protocol does have some security model based on the authcookies, I'm really not too happy with exposing my X11 server to the whole network. At the very least, evil users could crash the server. Evil geniuses may even obtain root access in some way or another, especially with such an old and unmaintained version. I've only been rudimentary testing remote sessions, but as far as I see, opening a new session, resuming and terminating works, at least with xterm as the remote application. I can't really test this more thoroughly, as my test system seems somewhat borked in X11 mode and is pressing "escape" after every key press. This is also happening in local xterm sessions for me, but I haven't found any information to this kind of misbehavior. Not being able to test this stuff is just another good reason to not support it officially. This said, I guess I will publish new versions for 10.4 from time to time, for those users who are bound to it and brave enough to use it. But again, if it opens up anything visible, this is far more than you should even expect. Best regards, Mihai

This patch enables a compatibility mode for Mac OS X 10.4. Using this, interaction with the local X11 server and a remote server works fine. Note however, that there is one limitation: x2goclient will start one X11 server per connection. For security reasons, this is necessary. It will *not* clean up X11 server processes. This is left to the user. More information about 10.4 support will be posted on the x2go-dev mailing list (shortly). Hi all, I hereby present you a patch set of accumulated changes. Each patch should be applied in order. The first patch adds automatic translation processing to the x2goclient.pro file. Developers will have to update the translation templates by hand though, as usual. Template to Qt locales conversion is then handled by x2goclient.pro. Patch two just includes some minor whitespace/style fixes for x2goclient.pro. Patch three adds support for PPC compilation and adds the oddly forgotten Info.plist directive to x2goclient.pro. Patch four is another style fix for the copyright notice on sshmasterconnection.cpp. Patch five changes the way the host is given to libssh based on official Qt documents. Patch six facilitates turning SSH packet logging on or off. Patch seven, eventually, introduces support for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Together with the NX library patch, it also adds support for using nxauth, which is mandatory on all versions of OS X. I wonder how this stuff worked in the first place before, we should have seen a lot of problems without nxauth. Maybe some of Stephans and Jans problems in the past were actually caused by this all along. I will upload new versions for both 10.5 and up and 10.4 in some time (have to rebase one build machine first.) Another email regarding Mac OS 10.4 support will come in due time. Best regards, Mihai

If you don't have the sudo utility installed, log on as superuser ('root') and run the commands without sudo. Otherwise you can use the graphical package manager provided by your Linux distribution. X2Go-Future

Hi all, I am having some doubts about the future of X2Go and seeking for answers. I saw mails mentioning nx3.6 which seems a bit strange to me given that the next version of nomachine's nx is 4.0. And that is what makes me wonder about the future of x2go: The main parts of x2go (nx-agent and assorted low-level libraries) seem to go closed-source, at least as far as I can tell from their licensing documents. So what happens to X2Go? I love the work you guys did and do. Resuming sessions while changing desktop- geometry is real fun. Having responsive desktops over WAN where vnc just doesn't work, is real fun. Using locally attached usb-stick on the remote server is real fun. Which made me "force" my colleages switch from our old VNC-based setup to X2Go. Sadly the expirience suffered when we updated the nx- libs from 3.4 to 3.5: On WAN-connections its still usable but on LAN X2Go looses in speed and latency and responsiveness against VNC. Which my co- workers really hate. My hope was that next nx-libs might fix this. And they probably will, but not for us when there is a price-tag associated with it. So how to go on in our case? What is your future planning for X2Go? Do you have plans (and knowledge and manpower) to further develop the nx-libs on the open-source base? Do you have a promise from nomachine that the libs will go open-source again? Do you have plans to use a different x-protocol like vnc from tigervnc or turbovnc? (Combining the speed of tigervnc and the features of sessions and apps and storage-forwarding of x2go seems like a good idea to me currently.) Thanks for your answers! Have a nice weekend, Arnold

Windows X2Go client and Windows 8

Hi Devs, just FYI: I tried to run 3.99.2.1-rc3 on Windows 8 (32-Bit) and it gets to the point where the connection is established and it tries to start the X server on the client, then it completely crashes Windows 8 (forced reboot). Attempting to run vcxsrv.exe on its own doesn't seem to do anything: There's no black X desktop showing up, but Win8 doesn't crash either. With Windows 8 schedluled for release in October 2012, I guess *someone* should take a look at this soon. -Stefan

Clipboard feature?

Hi Devs, not long ago, someone (Alex?) posted a message that X2Go doesn't strive to be NoMachine NX and prefers to work as a glue between several freely available and already existing components (like, using ssh tunneling and FUSE for file sharing between server and client). One feature that NoMachine NX (and FreeNX) has is to limit the use of the clipboard: You can set it to work both ways, server -> client, client -> server, or not at all. How could that be mimicked if such a feature is not part of X2Go? -Stefan

[nx-libs] Reason for using quilt

Hi, I'm wondering why you guys are using quilt for managing patches to the nx-libs repository. I see that the general purpose is to have the original nomachine source base intact/unchanged to track changes easily. However, quilt is a pain to use (i.e., omitting a patch in the series or changing it), especially taking into consideration that git _already is_ a SCM. Wouldn't it be easier to actually use multiple branches for that purpose? [nomachine]--{3.5.0}------------{3.6.0 (future)}----... \-->[x2go]-------\-->------------... where [name] is a branch named "name", {name} is a tag named "name" and the arrows denote merges. Note that we don't want to merge x2go project changes back into the original nomachine source, thus not merging the x2go branch into the nomachine branch. However, we _want_ to merge new versions of nomachine's source into the x2go branch at some point. Also, this setup is very flexible. If, for instance, you decide to still support the x2go nx 3.5.0 branch, even though nomachine nx 3.6.0 has been released, simply branch off the x2go branch, like this: [nomachine]--{3.5.0}------------{3.6.0 (future)}----... \-->[x2go]-------\-->------------... \-->[x2go 3.5.0]--------... Afterwards, the nomachine branch (tag 3.6.0) can then be merged into the x2go branch and the x2go 3.5.0 life on happily ever after. It is way easier to rebase a branch such as to not include a specific commit (cherry-pick), than omit a patch in the quilt patch series. Not sure if it's only me, but this quilt stuff is really messing with my work flow. Please drop your thoughts in here. Best regards, Mihai
