Dear Sirs, may I post a question regarding a non-x2go issue? If it is ok, here is my query; I have Linux Mint 8 (Helena / Ubuntu 9.10) installed on my desktop at home. A friend of mine was clearing his office and gave me a piece of Wyse Winterm WT5420XL. I grabbed it with the view of connecting this thin client to my desktop so that my family can access the desktop. I thought it was plug and play but it is not so. I don't know where to begin / how to get started. I looked at http://www.wyse.com but WT5420XL was not even listed in the product range! The firmware is Winterm 5000 series / V1.0.6 (Build 407). The closest is WT5440XL. Anyway, the website has only references of hooking up to Citrix or similar high priced thin client server environments. There is no reference of hooking up to a standard Linux Mint / Ubuntu desktop, for any of their products in their product range. I am connected to the internet via an Aztech ADSL (4-port + Wifi) router-modem. This Aztech router-modem is the DHCP server. I connected the WT5420XL to this router-modem. My desktop is 192.168.1.100, the WT5420XL is 192.168.1.101 In the WT5420XL Terminal Properties / Network I selected "Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server". When I click to Terminal Properties / SysInfo I can see that in the TCP/IP Settings the IP Address is 192.168.1.101, Gateway 192.168.1.1 (Aztech router-modem). In /etc/gdm/custom.conf the setting is as follows; ************************************************************ # GDM configuration storage [xdmcp] Enable=true DisplaysPerHost=2 [chooser] [security] [debug] [daemon] TimedLoginEnable=false AutomaticLoginEnable=false TimedLogin=johnson AutomaticLogin=johnson TimedLoginDelay=30 ************************************************************ In the Winterm Connection Manager / Configure I click on Add / New Connection and select X Connection. In Winterm Connection Manager / Configure / XSetup / Start I select "Remote Desktop Mode". In Winterm Connection Manager / Configure / XSetup / Connect I select XDMCP-Query and for XDMCP Server I enter 192.168.1.100. And I give this the Title "Linux1". In In the Winterm Connection Manager / Connections I click on "Linux1", the screen goes into black&white mode than a few seconds later the error box "Xconnection error / No respond from XDMCP server." appears. Clicking OK will bring me back to the Winterm Connection Manager screen. I have been searching the web and stumbled across x2go's website. Wow!

I've been playing with x2go for a couple of days, and the only thing that comes to mind, is «wow». I've been using FreeNX for a long time, and one of the things I've been struggling with, is two-way audio. Using x2goserver-one, it just worked. I've only tried with Ubuntu on both client and server and I hope it works well with Windows and OS X clients too. If that's the case, then I'm definitely sold. One question: is it possible to deactivate the magic pixel functionality in the upper-right corner and instead use a command to switch to the client OS? That would be awesome. Thanks! Suspend and resume physical session

Hi, is it possible to suspend a physical session and to resume it with x2go (Or to somehow "transfer" a physical session to an x2go-session and backwards)? Consider the following scenario: 1) Developer starts his machine and prepares an application/presentation he wants to present in the meeting room 2) Developer suspends his local session and wants to reopen this session from the meeting room and he wants exactly the session state he has left on the desktop. 3) After the meeting the developer wants to go back to his workstation and resume the suspended session. I already know that it's possible to suspend a x2go-Session but what i want is something like Windows Remote Desktop. best regards, david

Larger-scale X2GO installations - experience?

Dear all, I have been looking for a suitable set-up for our high school (Swiss Gymnasium, grades 10 through 13, 400 students, 60 teachers) that would allow our students to use their own netbook/laptop in class as well as at home. Conditions are: 1. no technical support for users' computers (therefore no installing individual applications, no passing out images etc.) 2. must work on computers in any state, even with broken OS, browser whatever (so must allow terminal server solution as fall-back) 3. plattform independent (win/mac/linux and independent of individual computer models) 4. must work over WLAN 5. should be available on- as well as off-site A couple of years ago I started looking more closely into LTSP and I have set up a test lab that works just fine. Though, the local nature of that makes it less suitable to our needs. Clearly, I have studied NX and now I have followed the development of X2GO more or less closely. I feel that X2GO is the perfect candidate and I want to set up a larger-scale test network. Before doing so, however, I would like to hear other people's experience with such set-ups. Custom paper size for cups-x2go.ppd

Hello, all. We have a client who needs to use the x2go printing system to print to plotters for construction drawings. They need to be able to specify custom paper sizes. For example, I am on site right now and they need to print 30" x 36" drawings. What would be involved in editing the cups-x2go.ppd file so that they can specify a custom paper size? We had hoped to offload that job to the local print driver but, when we tried to do this with the cups-x2go printer, it sent an A4 sized image and printed it on 30" x 36" paper. Thus it seems essential for the cups-x2go driver to send the custom sized document in the first place. Thanks - John

Shared drive icon cleanup

Hello, all. We've been having a problem with the icons created when one shares a local share with the X2Go desktop not being cleaned up on Windows computers. It works fine when the client is Linux. This could be peculiar to our highly customized setup. Has anyone else noticed this? Александр, здравствуйте! Я нашел временное решение: в скрипте монтирования /usr/bin/x2gomountdirs добавил параметр umask=0000 для команды sshfs. И после, проброса папки на сервер, я выполняю под пользователем скрипт, анализирующий папку media в home директории и в случае наличия в ней проброшенной папки, выполняется команда: convmvfs /home/$USER/folder -o srcdir=/home/$USER/media,icharset=CP1251,ocharset=UTF8 папка folder конечно же должна быть создана. Конечно это некрасивое решение, но видимо иного быть не может. Потому как, если изменить скрипт монтирования под кодировку cp1251, то возникнут проблемы с Linux --> Linux связкой. Есть мысль, создать копию x2gomountdirs с параметрами для монтирования cp1251, а в windows-клиенте сделать опцию, монтировать в русской кодировке. Я, правда, не уверен, что это возможно. Т.к. не влезал пока в принцип работы самого сервера и клиента. Но если бы это было возможно реализовать, думаю, решились бы многие проблемы, потому что не только с русской кодировкой могут быть проблемы, арабская, иврит, китайская и т.д. И причем именно в связке Windows --> Linux Should i translate my message? Or i can post in russian?

Hi, thank you for your project, it is amazing! Primarily, excuse me for my English. I have one problem with folder mapping... The situation is that I want to use x2go in Russia. And the mapping folders from Windows to linux hampered difference charsets (cp1251 and UTF-8). So, how can I mount the Windows folder converting in UTF-8? there is such a fuse-convmvfs, but I do not know how to implement it in a script to mount the folder. I am waiting for your help! x2go local printing sends to pdf app

Hello, all. We are in the home stretch of our first major X2Go deployment and have hit a problem with using the x2go cups printer to print to local devices. When Windows users print to the X2Go printer and select a physical printer from the list of local devices, we find the print job is opened by whichever application is configured to open PDF files. For example, we had one station where the print jobs opened in Acrobat Standard no matter what printer we sent the job to. We removed Acrobat Standard and the job now opened in Acrobat reader. I'm assuming this is a bug. Is it something I have misconfigured? We really want the job going where we send it and not to a PDF reader (unless, of course, we tell it to go to the PDF reader!). Binary packages for Fedora

Hello guys Recently I've found this piece of software which is really missing. Previously I've played with nomachine stuff but it is not fully free. I would like to help with creating packages for Fedora. There is only x2goclient-cli command-line (not finished yet) I've tried it in Ubuntu but I'm little bit confused with too many packages there. Have you any suggestion how to split it to packages? And what is necessary for server part and which version you suppose to use for build like this (latest or older)? Thanks Pavel

SSH and Performance

Hi everybody, we have been trying x2go for about a year now both on our thin clients and as a remote access solution. On our thin clients (both legacy Intel Pentium-III 1 GHz and modern Intel Atom 330) it appears a lot of CPU power is consumed by ssh. Especially while both animations and sounds are played the play back is sometimes interrupted due to the lack of CPU performance. So we temporarily switched back to plain remote X11 (without compression and encryption) for our thin clients while sticking to x2go for remote access. Nevertheless x2go seem to be designed for both purposes. I would like to ask if someone else can confirm this and if the is a workaround. Maybe it will be possible to skip encryption for local use in a future version in order to be able save CPU time and even energy. (Of course x2go uses ssh for both security and port forwarding.) upcoming release

Dear x2go users, for the last months we've been working on a new release. First we thought to bring some new features, but now we'll bundle it, because there where many changes needed. It still will take some time to the release, but we wan't to inform you on some changes we are discussing. First of all: We are planing a multi session x2goclient for the release after the next release. So there will be a lot of work of redesigning our clients. This would be easier with only one client architecture and as the Qt client is our base for the Linux, Windows, Maemo and Mac OSX platforms, we are asking the question: Would it be ok to focus our work on the Qt client and to stop/reduce our work on the GTK client? If we would go on developing both clients equally, it will really take a long time to implement all new planned features and this will slow down the whole project. The Question can also be transformed: Is there anybody interested to help us to keep the GTK client up to date? Please tell us your thoughts but keep in mind, that the Qt Toolkit is available on all major distros and we'll keep on developing our Gnome bindings. This will not be a preconfigured "choice of Desktop Environment". So we think we should now continue with some of the new features of the next release (as a contrast): Yes, there will be a Browser Plugin. It will be realized as a "sponsored development" so we'll get some money for our work and the sponsor will be named. You'll be able to integrate the plugin into a Website and you'll have all features of the x2goclient. Yes there will be a "session sharing" option without the need of a LDAP server. The new "session sharing" option will make it possible to share a x2go session with another user, to share a already started xorg session with another user and to share a session with more than one user. There will be a system tray application which will help configuring the sharing settings. After getting so many mails about a wiki for documentation - yes we are working on a wiki which will replace the odf/pdf/html manuals. We are looking for new localisations. If x2goclient is not available in your language and you want to translate it, please let us know (on the list ). We'll provide a *.ts file for your language (qt-linguist). We'll announce the the release here on the list and on our blog - at the moment we can't tell you when it'll be ready. Ubuntu 9.10 and Kcontrol module

Hi Everyone, I'm new here. I don't have developper skills like most of you but there's no Web-Place to talk about this nice product X2go. I'm doing some testing to implement this solution for some of my clients. I tested Ulteo and NX Nomachine. After some more researches I found the FreeNX project which apparently was not supported anymore ... till I found this X2go project. I read about linux4africa where I can find some ideas of implementation, the blog about x2go, but not enough to see the real functions of x2go. In my case for example, I love Ubuntu and I really want to propose it to my client. But there is a big problem about x2go on Ubuntu : No administration console. Apparently the module kcontrol is not any more installable on this distibution (Ubuntu 9.10 in my case and probably the 10.04 in few months) ... and nobody talk about it. Is anyone found the solution in this case ? I read about the reason to not get a forum and I don't get it. The forum is easy to find an answer with the search module. And you don't have to go there everyday to see if there's some new topics or updates, you just have to configure the notifications. Hope the X2Go project will be followed by many many people !! So we'll configure away! We were originally thinking of arts with ALSA and tweaking asound.conf It sounds like (no pun intended) you're intimating we're better off configuring arts to use ESD and then configure Pulse to emulate ESD. Any applications that can work with Pulse we'll set up natively and the rest we'll direct to ESD. Is that the approach? Thanks again - John

OT: Sound issues

Hello, all. We're having quite a struggle with sound in X2Go. I don't believe it is an X2Go issue as some applications, e.g, Kaffeine using Xine, work perfectly well. I think it is a Lenny + Pulseaudio + KDE3 + arts issue but, since that is a very typical X2Go setup, I thought I'd ask here. We're finding it very hit and miss when it comes to sound. Kaffeine works but Noatun does not. Sometimes flash plays sound across the X2Go connection and sometimes it does not. We never get other browser sounds (e.g., our Zimbra "pings" when there is new mail or a new IM). We began to get Twinklephone working but then it stopped (something has obviously changed in our environment and we're still tracking that down). We've started to really hack away at asound.conf (perhaps also hampered by the fact that there is no sound device in the server itself) but, I am always hesitant to move very far away from defaults for fear that I have overlooked something obvious. Good solutions generally work simply. What issues have other X2Go users found with sound and how have you resolved them? Thanks - John

running in Fedora

Hi, I'm trying to run (and eventually, package) x2goclient-gtk in Fedora (12). First of all, i can't compile it unless i run: $ sh autogen.sh $ sed -i 's:sigc++:parallel:' src/main_window.cc $ ./configure && make && make install Then after it compiles i can start the client, but it gives me an error when trying to connect to an X2go server: Connection failed Unable to write: /home/leon/.x2go/ssh/socaskpassF7TVAV The remote user is 'l.keijser' so i know it can't be a problem on the server side. Actually, when i fire up a client in a Ubuntu virtual, all works well. I have checked the permissions on the .x2go/ssh directory (they are created correctly) and even set them to 777, but with the same error. Can someone tell me what's going on? -- Léon

SSH Key issues

Hello, all. We recently recreated an X2Go Server and found we had serious ssh key issues when we tried to connect from the previously existing X2Go clients. We're still working these through so I'll list them in the order we find them. The GUI key popping up Accept Key dialogs with Yes and No options but no text. It was only when we canceled that we saw the error message about there being an old, conflicting key. By the way, we use both hashed known_host files and non-default ssh ports. This created a problem when we went to remove the offending keys in that the syntax ssh-keygen -R <server name> did not work. We needed to use ssh-keygen -R [<server name>]:<port number> (note the brackets). We then hit a problem where the X2Go Client for some reason started trying to open an SSH sessions as root. Since we use active host intrusion detection (OSSEC), the failed login attempts lock out the user and the screen stops at the X2Go logo. Oops! This was our misunderstanding of the auth.log. The problem was that our users are only defined in LDAP. We configured pam to look at pam_unix first. This tripped our HIDS and blocked our users. From our internal documentation: Now we need to fix some pam files. It is critical that the ldap modules are processed first even though that is non-standard. In the X2Go environment, many ssh sessions are fired off in quick succession. Since the pam_unix authentications fail for the LDAP users (as they are not defined locally), all the failed authentications trip the OSSEC auto-response and block the user from access to VD01. Thus, LDAP credentials MUST be processed first. This just leaves the empty dialog box. Thanks - John

Hello, all. I've been testing X2Goclient 3.0.1-4 for Windows on two separate computers running WindowsXP. I'm seeing the same problem on both. I set the session mode to full screen and yet the session opens to some less than full screen geometry with Window decorations. I have ensured the old sessions were not running so it was not inheriting old geometry. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Thanks - John

Out of order key strokes

Hello, all. I've been observing a serious issue with enough consistency that I'll report it. On highly congested links, we are noticing that keystrokes are delivered out of order. I do not know the internals of NX or even what its underlying transport is. It almost appears as if every keystroke is a packet as it is with telnet and the packets are being processed in their out of order sequence. I would think that SSH over TCP would handle packet ordering problems. When severely congested, the typing speed on the remote desktop becomes very lagged but, if one types far enough ahead, the far end of the buffer is played out of order particularly when there are the same characters close to each other (perhaps a compression bug? we have not done enough observation on that to state it dogmatically). For example, I don't know how many times today I typed something like "shared database in a complete" and had it come out "sharedd ataabse ina compleet" (in case that is displayed across a line break, there are two spaces between ataabse and ina). This can be exasperating to our clients when links are congested. It's one thing to have to wait for the display while it's another to see the display display something other than what was typed :-) Thanks - John

Hello, all. I'm both trying to deeply understand the workings of X2Go and trying to troubleshoot a problem we are having with SSH keys after replacing an X2Go Server. >From where does one checkout the repository? I'm not that used to Berlios and it didn't jump out at me. I did download the 3.01-4 tarball and tried to run it on my default Lenny installation of KDevelop. It complains that QtDesigner is too old. It's also complaining about paths when I try to run the debugger. Any tips for getting set up to work on the Qt code? Thanks - John

cups-x2go for multiple X2Go Servers

Hello, all. I'm stumbling through how to have a central cups server provide cups-x2go printing for multiple X2Go Servers. It seems the cups-x2go backend looks to the cups-x2go.conf file to specify the X2Go Server and only accommodates a single server. We want it to service hundreds or more. I see that the cups-x2go backend takes "cups-x2go job-id user title copies options [file]" as arguments. My current endeavor is to query the sessions database for the user to find the server but that presents the problem of when a user may have sessions on multiple servers. Is there any way to pass (even by hacking the code) the hostname of the originating X2Go Server as an argument? That would eliminate the need for the database call and make it more foolproof. Thanks - John PS - it looks like I've been able to move the x2gocleansessions processing to a central process for cleaning up hundreds of X2GoServers in a VServer 1-to-1 environment. Single application sessions terminate with certain mouse movements

Hello list, I'm having a strange problem with x2go in single application mode. Whenever I start an application and I move my mouse from within the application 'up' to the window decoration the session gets terminated on the client side. I can reconnect to the program, but it will crash again if I do the same mouse movement. I have tried this with GTK programs, xterm and xcalc and the situation remains the same. My setup is Debian Sid x86_64 with windowmaker. The problem also occurs when using blackbox. Could someone perhaps tell me what I can do to debug this further? Thanks! Hein-Pieter van Braam

x2gocleansessions order change?

Hello, all. I'm working on adapting the x2gocleansessions script to handle session cleanup from a VServer host for all of its guests. In working my way through the script, something seemed a bit strange. It looks like we attempt to delete sessions with a status of "F" before we delete the mounts for that sections which leads to a foreign key constraint violation. Shouldn't the rmsessionsroot call in x2golistsessions_sql be broken out separately and executed after x2goumount_session? I'd imagine there's something I'm missing but thought I'd at least ask. I'll submit the patches and documentation once I've got it working. Thanks - John

BUG: bash login shell required ...

the session management will fail if you connect to a X2Go server and your default login shell deviates from a BASH. reason: any client tries to export the host environment variable before it starts x2glistsession. export only works for BASH and not e.g. for tcsh. if someone is responding to that bug-report i can offer a workaround .. Copy & Paste from between windows client and x2go server

I have installed x2go server on my ubuntu machine, and a windows client, x2goclient-3.01-4-setup.exe. Everything works perfectly except for one: I couldn't copy & paste text between windows and my ubuntu gnome desktop. Is this a feature not included in the x2go or I missed something? Thanks... Shared print server for multiple X2Go Servers

Hello, all. We were hoping to run a central print server for potentially hundreds of X2Go Servers. However, we found that the print server cups-x2go driver did not send the print job to the X2Go Server unless we changed the x2goserver setting in cups-x2go.conf from local to the specific x2go server. From a brief look at the cups-x2go backend, this seems to be the expected behavior. How would one share a print server among multiple x2go servers? Thanks - John

Process documentation

Hello, all. We're finally headlong into refining our X2Go deployment and turning up lots of little issues. We're perfectly happy to dig through the scripts and even submit any patches we make rather than pester the list for each issue. However, is there any documentation outlining what the steps are in the process of setting up and tearing down an X2Go session? That would save us wading through all the scripts to see how their strung together. For example, we're seeing a problem where our local file and print mounts are not being removed when a session is terminated. We'll just work our way through the process to see what we have set up wrong but would like to know what that process is. I took a quick look on the X2Go web site, the berliosz site, and the repository but nothing jumped out at me other than to download all the packages and start reading through them. Thanks - John

RDP Connections on x2go Client

Dear x2go team, First of all, congratulations for an awesome project. Keep up the great work :) I recently tried to create via the x2go client, an RDP connection to a Virtual Machine running Windows XP. I was unsuccessful; the client insists on using SSH (port 22 on the windows client and whatever port you have set it up on the GTK client). Perhaps a checkbox labeled "RDP over SSH" might be a good option to have in later versions of the clients or perhaps you could turn the SSH port field into an RDP port field once that type of connection is selected. I also noticed that the Windows Client does not go to fullscreen mode even though the session is set to fullscreen. Perhaps that too can be addressed in later versions of the client. It's great to see projects like yours flourish and mature into invaluable tools. Keep up the great work. If you allow me to contribute to the project I would like to get the .ts file so I can translate x2go to my native language (Greek) unless you already have it translated into Greek. Shared DB patches

Hello, all. It looks like the line numbers in x2gopgwrapper_net have changed since I last submitted these patches. These patches have successfully applied to the latest repository files. To review what they are for, we felt uncomfortable both with giving our client desktops ssh access to the single database server and having them use the postgres super user to access the database. In our multi-tenant environment with many vserver based X2Go Servers (one X2Go Server per virtual machine), this was a dangerous security exposure especially since the PostgreSQL server holds databases besides the X2Go databases. There is an OpenOffice document included which explains the logic and the procedures for implementing this secure shared database setup. It eliminates both the need for ssh and to use the postgres user. Hope they help someone else - John

Central CUPS server not sending print jobs to physical desktop

Hello, all. We finally have our central CUPS server running after learning more than we ever wanted to know about NSS, LDAP, groups, and CUPS authentication! The CUPS server is running on Lenny and we have installed cups-x2go. We have NOT installed x2goprint as it our understanding from reading the documentation that it is not necessary on the CUPS server but only on the X2Go Server. Is this correct? We edited the client's .kdeprintrc file to point to the central cups server. The client does have x2goprint installed and both the user and x2goprint are members of the fuse group. The client uses a non-standard SSH port for security reasons. We restrict access to the desktop printers to the desktop users. Only I can print to my desktop printer and only Susie can print to Susie's desktop printer. When we print on the client to the X2Go-CUPS printer, the print job shows as successful but the print dialog never appears on the physical desktop. The CUPS logs show a successful print job but no popup. We have set up dsa key access. If we do a ssh -i /root/.x2go/ssh/.x2goprint/id_dsa x2goprint@<virtual desktop>, it works - we open an ssh console without being prompted. We have accepted the keys into the known_hosts file for both the short and fully qualified name. The strange thing is that a packet trace shows no SSH traffic. There is plenty of CUPS traffic but the CUPS server never tries to communicate with the virtual desktop via SSH. If we use a local CUPS server instead, the X2Go print popup works just fine - very impressive. We have tried the setup with the local CUPS server both enabled and disabled. No difference. What have we missed? Why does the central CUPS server not even try to send the job to the virtual desktop? How can we troubleshoot it further? We see nothing suspicious in the logs including the auth logs. Thanks - John

x2gocleansessions and x2goprint

Hi, I have two questions about x2gocleansessions and x2goprint. x2gocleansessions is the deamon which runs in the background (daemon) and runs every 30 seconds. Why the 30 seconds ? Can the interval be raised (I see a 30sec statement in the perl script so I assume it is possible). The reason for asking is the fact I see a lot of x2gocleansession processes running on the server. The second question is abount x2goprint. When printing the cups print jobs are being saved in the / of the system. Windows client hangs after screen saver starts

I'm running X2GoClient 3.0.1-4 on WindowsXP home. If I walk away from my X2Go desktop for an extended period of time, when I stop the Windows screen saver, the X2Go screen is completely white and refuses to close; it must be forcibly closed. I've tried moving the mouse and typing the screensaver password on the remote system but that did not work. If I let Windows go to screen saver and then immediately end the screen saver, I do not have this problem. Killing the process seems to be stopping xming. Is this a known issue? Where should I be looking for data to troubleshoot? Thanks - John

X2GoClient mutes physical sound system

Hello, all. I am running fully patched Lenny on my physical desktop. I find whenever I connect to my virtual desktop via X2Goclient, it mutes my local sound system. Since I am using a softphone, this is a big problem and I must remember to go back to my physical desktop each time and reactivate it. Is this a bug, feature, or misconfiguration on my part? x2goclient-3.0.1-4. Thanks - John

These appear to be sshfs disk definitions but they do not appear as devices (e.g., allowing mounts). Ah, this is ringing a bell from when we worked with X2Go a year ago. Our tmp file system is in a separate tmpfs partition and set to noexec,nosuid,nodev. I would assume these artifacts are supposed to be devices but fail because they are located in /tmp and we are set to nodev. Is there any way to create the devices some place else besides /tmp?

OT: Configuring print dialog window

We do now have x2go printing working. Most of our users work in full screen mode. When they print, the dialog does not appear. They must click on the magic pixel to minimize the X2Go window and can then see the print dialog. May I suggest changing the X2Go print dialog properties so that the dialog is always on top. In the meantime, is there a way to configure this within KDE? I tried using the specific Windows behavior configuration and told it to not suppress focus stealing for the print dialog but that did not work. I assume this is because the dialog is not attempting to steal focus. Is there some other property that can be manipulated without changing the Qt dialog flags to force the dialog to jump to the foreground in KDE? Thanks - John
