The Vanishing Mouse

Hello all, it was reported on the list a while ago that somebody was having an issue where the mouse pointer within the X2GO session would disappear. Well, I finally managed to get the same thing to happen to me this morning while running X2GO under Windows XP Pro. Even suspending the session and re-connecting does not resolve the problem. The issue appears to be the version of Xming that is being distributed with X2GO. Why do I think this ? I suspended my session again and then killed of Xming via task manager. This caused the X2GO plugin to fail for which I created a new FF tab and reconnected. I connected straight back to the same session and X instance as before and my mouse pointer was back in the land of the living. The question is though how can we resolve this problem ? The 6.9 version of Xming that is shipped with X2GO is ~3 years out of date now, and to get the new 7.5 branch one has to subscribe. Hmmm, this would be fine for a couple of users but when we may be handling 100,000 of them it would get a bit pricey :( Any thoughts on what can be done ? -- Thanks, Phil

reason for keeping session dirs in .x2go folder

hi folks, we have discussed this earlier, but I think there was no real common opinion afterwards.... On X2go server and client each session produces its own session directory in the ~/.x2go directory. From the perspective of the X2go client: is there a proper reason to keep these session directories (apart from debugging)??? I am asking because I plan to integrate session-dir-purging-support into Python X2go: after a session has been suspended/terminated the session dir on the client will be deleted. Any comments? Python X2go - rev SSH tunnel + pulse audio support added

Dear list, as I am really interested in feedback... I have added SSH reverse tunneling support to the X2go client implementation library named Python X2go and that made it possible/and very easy to provide pulse audio support with Python X2go already. The Python X2go module can be tested with the PyHoca Client. x2go slow response

Hello, While testing x2go I have seen that the mouse latency is greater in x2go than in NX. For example, if I navigate with the mouse through the options of the gnome menu the response in x2go is slower than in NX. I am using the linux versions of the clients (x2goclient/nxclient) and I have configured the link speed with the same value (ADSL). Am I doing something wrong ? Thanks. --- Alejandro Alberola

Hey folks, I've been toying around with x2go a bit, and I'm really liking it. >From what I've seen, the overall architecture is cleaner than freenx and even neatx. Certainly none of that insanity of netcat's and fdcopy's. I was a rather disturbed by the x2goserver package adding a line in my sudoers file to allow anyone in the x2gousers group to run x2gopgwrapper as root. I checked out that script and the three scripts it can potentially call, x2gopgwrapper_{local,net,sqlite}. Other than the _net script I see no reason why root access is required. All these scripts do is access a database and run queries. The _net script as written probably needs root access, but there's no reason why with some permission adjustments on the postgres database server that it can't run unprivileged as well. As I'm just using sqlite on a single system, I did a little experiment and made some changes to run that script as an unprivileged user. I created an unprivileged x2go user with no password: (The defaults with this particular invocation of useradd are adequate, but the account can be restricted some more) useradd -r x2go So the sudoers entry becomes: #### X2GO section %x2gousers ALL=(x2go) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/x2gopgwrapper Then permissions on the sqlite database need changing so our x2go user can run its queries: cd /var/db sudo chown -R x2go.x2go x2go Finally, the scripts in /usr/bin need to be changed so that x2gopgwrapper runs at x2go: for i in x2go*; do sed -ibak -e 's/sudo x2gopgwrapper/sudo -u x2go x2gopgwrapper/' $i; done I made these changes on my system and have not had any issues connecting. I am only using the x2goserver package at the moment; it's just this one script that gets executed as root, I don't know about any of the other packages. There's also the matter of the x2gocleansessions cleanup script... There's a couple of sudo calls in there as well, I didn't change that just yet as I've just disabled it altogether to prevent the spam it sends to my syslog. I apologize if this topic has been brought up before or is discussed in the documentation someplace; I looked around and didn't see anything. I simply bring this up in the interest of system security. The fewer things that run as root the better. The changes I describe above are my quick hack-n-fix. If I get a chance in the next few days I can throw together a proper fix and submit a patch. (And please add my vote to the yes-please git repository crowd.) X2go seems to have a lot of possibilities and potential. Thanks to Heinz and Alex for their hard work. ^_^ rob

I just read about this. Google has introduced and open sourced a new image format to help speed up the performance of websites called W*ebP*. - *WebP has a 40% improvement over JPEG and WebP was designed to improve the compression offered by JPEG*. - Google has created a site<http://code.google.com/speed/webp/gallery.html>for Web developers and users to assess the performance of WebP. - The images presented at the site show WebP side-by-side with JPEG images. The WebP images are 40 to 50 percent trimmer in bytes but look the same to the human eye. - *WebP is based on Google's VP8 codec that they also open-sourced recently. * VP8 is part of the heart of HTML 5's video capability. - To trim down file size for WebP, Google used an image compressor based on the VP8 codec that Google open-sourced in May 2010. My question for x2go developers is Could WebP (or VP8 codec itself) be implemented at both the x2go-server and the x2go-client and *possibly get a substantial improvement* in video performance ?? Currently x2go as most NX oriented solutions (Freenx, NoMachine NX) typically use JPEG for compression. But it seems to me that WebP could be implemented and as it is reported to be 40% more efficient than JPEG... less bytes means less network traffic and usually better/faster performance. Tobias - a member of Linux4Afrika - offered his help to improve the communication of this project. Please have a look at www.linux4afrika.de. Linux4Afrika still offers the best x2go tutorials on the net. We also got help through Mike Gabriel (a member of the x2go-dev list -> das-netzwerkteam.de ). Thank you very much! From now on we'll change some rules of communication on this project: 1. x2go-dev list the x2go-dev list is reserved for all development topics. There will be no discussion on topics like "organisational criticism" or "personal preferences". 2. x2go-user list The x2go-user list is reserved for all user topics. Please also avoid topics like "organisational criticism" or "personal preferences". On the x2go-user list people may ask their questions on setting up working x2go environments, share their problems when using the x2goclient etc. This list will be co-moderated by Tobias. Please use acurate mail subjects and don't discuss "Off Topic" . 3. x2go-announcements list there will be a new group called "x2go-announcements" too. This group is READ ONLY. On this group announcements will be made. When ever it's possible we will connect the information with a DATE so you can use it for your concepts. We will do our best to give you timelines and time frames whenever possible. If we realize that plans and actions get delayed, we will inform you as soon as we know about it, so that you can adopt your own schedules. We hope to meet your requirements with this change. We will help to build up this public GIT and it should be the only space where people can find contributions. (We rather ask you to join in on our Berlios GIT, than setting up a repository of your own). The GIT Feature of our Berlios is already activated. It is planned to publish the GIT with the help of Mike Gabriel - who is indeed a great help and truly a member of our new "internet related community". x2go has 3 mayor user groups. This might not be clear to everyone. The communication channels of the first two groups are personal contact, regular meetings, phone conferences, etc. and of course e-mail as well. Most of these people are listening to this list, only some of them are posting contributions from time to time. That is namely people around the Linux4Africa project and people around Skolelinux. Both groups have been using x2go intensively for quite a while and we are always keen on keeping x2go compatible to their setups and environments. The newest and third community is the online community of x2go. Mostly people, we have never met and maybe will never meet in person. The individual demands of this group are much different from the first two groups. This group has very specific needs and we would like to take care of them. Again I have to thank you (the community) for the idea of the groups and the GIT as it was taken out of the history of our mailing list. The lists will be made available in the next days. This is the most recent version we are working on and it will solve some reported problems with x2goclient. This is an untested state of this software and it is not meant for productive usage. It is not usable as plugin at all at the moment. Compiling X2goclient on Ubuntu ARM

I have an IGEPv2 board which I'd like to test x2goclient on. I've installed Ubuntu Maverick ARM on it, but I couldn't find any binary packages for it, so I thought I'd compile it myself. Hello dead project...

I just wan't to be fair comment the things that going on here. Dear project, whats going on here is business strategy. Somebody wants to earn money or wants to have good reputation and needs influence on the tool he is using - at best not influence but control. This is needed to proof customers or what ever you address that you are the only competence. It is always esier to show the world failures of people, but in this way it was showing failures AND developing something better. I too wanted to get control here and I've began to work on my own fork. And I've caused trouble to existing project. I bet this project is dead even if you don't know now. The failures of the project was: No awareness of trademarks, no awareness of fast reacting and wrong marketing. If you want to keep control you should develop such things as company - not as project. To give you a last chance - you can keep your little domain. It will be wanted soon by sombody else - so make your homework... ...this time... Congratulations to the new way - I bet with contributions a fork will grow faster and better. Here my thoughts about how this would be better: * Don't spend time on own clients - integrate your work into existing clients like krd, tsclient, vinagre,... * Have every functionality as a module so that somebody can use SMB and others SSHFS or WEBDAV * As Plugin you should only make a google native client project. This is much better than every Plugin and Googles Browser even runs on phones - and you don't even need to compile it especially. I bet this can be soon done with python too. * Face the future - there will only be google and ubuntu - javacript and python. Your work is to be compared with spice and nx4!!! so long...

Dear List, Does anyone know of any advantages from installing a hardware ssh (or crypto) accelleration device on a server machine running x2go? For example I've tried to tweak my SSH server but despite some improvements in responsiveness video playback (I tried a youtube video) is still choppy. Would a device like that help or does x2go's design not allow it to benefit from such an enhancement? I'm using my x2go client from a remote location using wifi and not in a LAN. Regards, Dimitris

Hi Mike and list, We are seasoned python developers and thus very capable in assisting in the build of pyx2go client. We could fund some of the development, but we prefer to assist in the development ourselves, because that way we have some influence in the development and also in the speed of the development. That is also why I asked for documentation. If you have started a project for this, we would be happy to participate. So if you have an svn server or something and could give me read/write access we would definitely help. But...... We do need some information on the architecture that we would use. We have looked at the way information is exchanged with the server and I start to understand some of it, but a lot is still blurry. So PLEASE give me some insight in the architecture and what component implements which part. BKO and USB over IP

Speaking of Thin Clients... Although this is not directly related to the Thin Client thread it is something I was impressed with. Boot Kernel Organization (BKO) <http://boot.kernel.org/> BKO is based on a REALLY SMALL linux ... about 1 Megabyte. It can be installed onto just 1 small partition of a USB, CD (or floppy if you have one). Its sole purpose is to boot and provide you with a simple GUI menu system (see pictures on the site) where you can select which OS you want to boot and then *BKO uses HTTPFS to download and boot that OS* for you. NOTE: on their website their list of supported OS and OS version is very outdated. When you actually do this you will see Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and server, you will also see newer versions of fedora as well as other linux distributions. I've started using this with virtual machines. I download the CD ISO and then use that to create a KVM virtual machine instance using that .ISO file. Why? Well I use that 1 KVM VM instance to launch any new VM instance I might need. Since it is only 1 Megabyte in size it boots nearly immediately. I select which Linux distribution I want, what version and the BKO then downloads the selected OS and boots it. It has worked great so far. Off of the BKO FAQ you should note: BKO is based on HTTPFS and it uses only valid HTTP requests. It means, if you have HTTP access, you can boot with BKO. Only problem that may occur is if you are behind HTTP proxy. We plan to add support for HTTP proxy in near future. Stay tuned till then. It is expected that you can use *Public DNS* system as BKO is configured to use Public dns servers instead of the servers provided by user or DHCP. We will be soon fixing this problem. Till then, you are expected to have public DNS access. That 2nd paragraph *I think may be outdated* as I believe you can now install the BKO "server" locally instead of using the BKO.org servers to download from. If you install your own BKO server locally then you "could" install all of the OS's you work with on it. Then you could use your own BKO to select *and more importantly boot a pre-configured OS* !!! I haven't checked but I am wondering if a Windows OS could be booted using BKO as well? I'm thinking you could have something like a preconfigured Ubuntu (or fedora etc) desktop with x2go client configurations and applications already installed and then just use the BKO and their GPXE to boot the clients. I haven't gotten as far as looking into installing it locally so my current workaround is to use BKO to boot then I use the python based Fabric library to automagically provision the OS with x2go, the apps I want etc. Fabric is really simple to use and lets you execute remote commands via scripts so you can for instance install x2go server or client very easily.. After the Fabric script is done my virtual machine has the OS of my choice with all the apps and x2go installed. Another interesting technology I discovered lately and tried out is USB over IP. Perhaps this could be incorporated into a future feature for x2go server & client ??? I've tried nearly all of the leading remote desktop technologies that I could find. Remote Video is hard to improve on any of them without taking a different approach that frame buffer forwarding. So NoMachine's NX, Citrix's remote desktop technology etc all are limited by bandwidth constraints of trying to push full motion video frame buffers across a WAN link.. no matter how good the compression. Which by the way also affects video quality because of delay. There are solutions out there that are trying to address this in a different architectural way such as the Spice client & server architecture which does the video processing at the client and more or less sends gui control cmds over the net. There is also PCoIP (PC over IP) which works very well at full motion video and also 3D video BUT it requires hardware installed at the server side and also a PCoIP card at the Client side... so its not cheap. I think there are 2 other things that should impact the performance current NX related solutions: 1) I recently read that several NX solution vendors are now using *libjpeg-turbo *instead of the older libjpeg. *http://libjpeg-turbo.virtualgl.org/* * It's a high-speed version of libjpeg based on libjpeg/SIMD but with additional optimizations and support for 64-bit platforms (and neatly* * packaged into an SDK that can install on most types of x86/x86-64 systems.) It's 2-4x faster than libjpeg and GPL-compatible, so I would* * imagine that NX related remote desktop solutions like x2go, FreeNX and NX from NoMachine itself woul all benefit from it performance-wise.* *NOTE: when I first tried libjpeg-turbo I installed it only on the client and I didn't seem much if any change. However I recently learned that actually has to be innstalled on BOTH server and client to see the performance benefit but in a recent test I saw the results of increased performance 180%. Installing on Ubuntu Lucid/KDE4?

Hi all, I've been setting up a thin-client solution based upon x2go and I'm interested in seeing if it will work with KDE4 on Ubuntu Lucid/Maverick. The issue I've run into is when installing the x2goldapadmin tools the installation borks out stating that kcontrol is not available. Does anyone know if packages are available for the above combination? Thanks, Matt

GPL violations

Hey list, I just got an email back from Heinz - a private mail! You know that I have been discussing about the plugin and sources with him and Alex on this list for a couple of months now. Other people have asked as well where the sources for the plugin are. Obviously they think that I cannot read C++ code and sent me the link to the plugin.cpp source (http://x2go.obviously-nice.de/mozplugin/) again - in the hope that I believe them. But unfortunately I had a look into the code (trying to build it) and saw that it executes a binary: an extended version of x2goclient with heaps of new command line options. Asking for the source (which is your and my right according to GPL) I got one of these famous excuses saying "oh, we are in the process of changing to QTBrowserPlugin" and so on. In short: 99% of x2goplugin's sources are not published - this affects (modified and not modified) third-party components as well. Everybody who publically distrubtes GPL software in binary form and does NOT provide a link to the sources violates the license. The GPL doesn't say "if you have time and the weather is nice you can publish the sources if you want to". Therefore I would not recommend anybody to use the plugin in a production environment and integrate it into any project! It will be you who will get into court if one of your customers enforces his GPL rights and you have distributed it in your project. Just to let you know: I feel a bit fooled with all the excuses and that they try to somehow get around legal requirements by sending me some stuff that's only a 7.5K file wrapping around the actual component. In my opinion, the way they deal with community input/ideas/contributions is ignorance. Nothing of the critics and proposals was taken seriously. We still don't have a GIT repo - and that would take them 5 minutes or less! But that's alright - we don't have to have git. But we HAVE to follow legal requirements in the GPL. And not next year, but NOW! I spent a lot of time and energy into this and the result: I am maintaining my own python code externally now, because they don't let me contirubte! And the worst result: I am frustrated as hell, that I spend months waiting and writing dozens of mails to enforce my rights that I have by law. After all, I'd just like to inform all of you, that I am going to report this to gpl-violations.org as after explaining it again and again I still see no change. I'll inform NoMachine as well and advise them to enforce their legal rights as well - it is their code as well! I am sorry for bothering you with this, but I think it is important to draw things like this into plubic attention Jörg

Joerg You just said in one of your responses... "*I am asking for the source for a month or two*".. Okay... - Alex was on vacation a month ago. - Heinz is on vacation now - each was 1 month off. I know it was thoughtless of them to take vacations and I'm sorry their responsiveness didn't meet your needs. You DO have choices... 1. wait until the new x2go is actually released and then see if you can get what you want 2. go elsewhere and find another solution such as: - NoMachine's NX v4.0 is do out soon - FreeNX - NeatX - or look into the Spice client & server software from Red Hat. Thanks for your comments and opinions but I'm not sure the discussion is very productive at this point and perhaps the forum could go back to answering other questions? Hi Heinz, Alex and list, as there are lots of questions and wishes arising on this list and by my customers, I'd like to build my own version of x2goplugin and x2goclient to be able to play around and implement new things. As you told me some days ago, the plugin source is here: http://x2go.obviously-nice.de/mozplug/ That is indeed true - but where's the rest of it? As far as I can tell from the code, it starts an instance of x2goclient with some "secret" command line options. Where is that modified x2goclient's source? Joerg I agree with John in his view of Hienz and Alex. They are good folks BUT everyone has to remember they are ONLY 2 people ! They have a separate life where they have to earn money to support themselves & families too. x2go is something they have dedicated themselves to because it aids them in their other income related activities. There's an old saying: Nothings impossible for those that don't do the work. Given that Heinz and Alex have been working for the past year to create this new release of x2go ... again while working on their day jobs ... oh, and while building the new x2go wiki etc. Now that they are in what is hoped to be the final stages and frankly I'd rather they focus on that and worry about where to post the source code when they have some breathing space. Hi, (first of all, thanks for your help Heinz and Sven) I would like to know if it's possible to resume a specific session with the plugin ? The goal is to list sessions (with x2golistsessions) on the server, and paste the session id in the x2go.server file in order to resume it. I don't want to use the resuming form showed by the plugin (my users are confused with it). headless client with pyx2go

Hi list, We want to develop a headless client in python using pyx2go. The application should have the following features: 1. All parameters except for the password should come from a profile stored in the users home directory 2. The user should have the possibility to enter the password, the username and the server, where the username and the server should be retrieved from the profile 3. The client should support clientside printing as the x2go client 4. The home directory (or another directory) on the clientside should be mounted with fuse on the serverside 5. The client should start XMing with all appropriate parameters 6. It should be possible to start an application from the server side by starting a file. So if a file called test.doc exists and that file is started, MS-Word should start. 7. The profile should be maintained by a separate program (nice gui application) We've got the demo.py running. However when it ends, the session is terminated correctly, but a thread remains active. Probably the thread should be joined with the mainprogram. a2go-client for MAC

Hi, first, thank you for a nice application. I've been looking for a suitable free NX low-bandwidth solution and x2go seems to fit the purpose well. I'm using the MAC client, and I'm a bit puzzled that it is necessary to turn on remote connections (and hence open the X11 TCP port for listening) in order to locally display the desktop received over NX protocole (presumably tunneled over SSH) . So first you tunnel over SSH for security, and then it is required to open a potentially vulnerable service in order to display that picture ... ? When starting X programs (like XTERM) in OSX it seems that the default behavior is to communicate over a internal unix socket. Plugin updates over time

What will be the policy regarding Plugin Updates over time? By that I mean will future versions of the plugin retain backward compatibility and work with existing installations of x2go? It seems the browsers are always pushing users to upgrade their plugins so they have the latest functionality and security fixes. But this can also mean that existing installations that work with the newer plugin versions could also need updating as well unless the plugin is always sure to be backward compatible. What is the x2go policy in regard to plugin updates and backward compatibility? Regards, Gerry

x2goclient-cli don't terminates correctly?

Hi, I have noticed that x2goclient-cli doesn't close all "Childproceses" after I closed/terminated a session. If I try to use sound , can't get artsd running properly :/ , there will be 2 SSH connections left, else only one SSH connection. X2Go client occasionally loses mouse cursor

Hello, all. We've seen this bug rarely but enough to know that it is a real bug and not just a coincidence. Here is the report from our internal trouble ticket. Unfortunately, it smells like it might be something in the NX libraries: The user called because she could not see her mouse cursor in her virtual desktop. It was visible in her physical desktop. As we later observed, it was indeed present in the virtual desktop, e.g., if she happened to stop the mouse over a file in Konqueror, it would display the thumbnail, but the mouse cursor was not visible. We tried suspending and reconnecting; that did not work. I could see where the mouse was supposed to be via my VNC session to her physical desktop so I tried to change the mouse cursor theme but that did not work (and required a restart of KDE). Finally, before rebooting to try to re-establish the connection between her physical and virtual desktops to display the mouse cursor, we thought to suspend her X2Go session and then completely close her X2Go client. When she restarted the client and reconnected to her X2Go session, the mouse had re-appeared. We did not need to reboot the physical computer.

Local Port for NXPROXY - no listen socket

Anyway what is expected to run on these ports and how are they assigned? Everytime i try a connect, they are just increased. Hello everybody, after reading the archives of the mailing list I'm still not completely sure if there actually exists a functionality that cleans up sessions of users that are inactive for X hours. Now I decided to completely prevent users from suspending their sessions. I read the entry from Heinz-M. Graesing which he made on Sunday, the 9th of August 2010, but as far as i can see this does not prevent users from suspending their session when hitting the X on the upper right of the x2go window. Wouldn't it also be a feasible workaround to overwrite /usr/bin/x2gosuspend-session with /usr/bin/x2goterminate-session? I've tried this and the sessions seem terminated. At least I get a blank desktop if I login again after closing the window with the x-Button and the processes are killed (cannot be found using the ps command). Is that solution possible, or am I missing something? Referring to the case of resuming a session, I think it is clear that if there is no possibility to suspend sessions, it should be impossible to resume a session, too. windows installer and Xming

Hi, I wanted to package our own application with the X2Go installer and i noticed that you also packaged the Xming installer in the x2go installer. I use the X2go /S switch to install without user confirmation, but afterwards Xming's installer is called and prompts the user for confirmation messages (which i don't want to). Is it possible for you to release the X2Go installer without the Xming packaged? I can include it separately and use its /SILENT switch to skip all user confirmation screens. Souce of Windows client available?

Hi list, We considering migrating from our current Linux terminal servers solution to X2GO. During tests however, we discovered copy/paste from a Windows client to Linux server is not available. Since this is a show stopper for us we're considering developing this ourself and contributing this functionality to the project. Ah, I have answered my own question. There were two problems: The first was that I was using version 3.01-2 of the client. I chose it because it was listed under "Stable" at the x2go.org web site. I replaced it with 3.01-4 and that worked more smoothly. The second problem was related to DNS. On my Windows box I use Apple's Bonjour Print Services: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999 Which is an implementation of zeroconf that interoperates with Ubuntu's avahi, so that when you're using DHCP with changing IP addresses as I am instead of looking up the IP you can just type in servername.local. It works when pinging from the command line and when I'm using PuTTY but for some reason it doesn't work in the x2go client; when I entered the IP address of the server in the session settings I was then able to connect successfully. So, sorry for the confusion. Thanks again for this wonderful piece of software, it will make things so much easier for me. fw

Troubleshooting Windows client

Hello, I am having some trouble with the x2go Windows client 3.01-2. I have several Ubuntu 9.04 systems and a Windows XP SP3 system. I have installed x2goserver-one 3.0.1-1, x2gognomebindings 2.01-1, and x2goclient (QT4 version) 3.01-5 on the Linux systems (those versions are the ones apt chose from your repository) and they are able to connect to each other with what appears to be full functionality. But the Windows system cannot connect to any of the Ubuntu systems, even using the exact same session parameters. So it would seem that the problem must be with the client on the Windows box? The Windows box definitely has network connectivity to the others; I am using VNC and SSH via PuTTY already. After I press "OK" in the PIN entry dialog there is a pause of 30 or 40 seconds and then I get a popup titled "Error": Connection failed servername.local: ssh: connect to host servername.local port 22. Connection timed out In the auth.log on the server there are no corresponding entries appearing in response to the attempt. Is there a client-side log or some other method I could use to trace where the problem is occurring? Thank you, fw P.S. White screen in Windows when returning from screen saver

We are seeing this problem with alarming regularity. It affects Windows clients only so it may be an Xming issue. If the user's Windows screen saver kicks in while they have their X2Go session open, when they stop the screensaver, the X2Go desktop presentation screen is complete white. Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone know why it happens, how we fix it, or where to start looking to troubleshoot? Thanks - John

I believe Heinz recently mentioned that the Windows full screen issue would be addressed in the next plugin release (and I suppose the next client release). Will that release also address the Windows clipboard issue, i.e., will using the clipboard be an option? Thanks - John
