One thing you could do - of course, this needs to be done in advance -
is start up a minimal desktop environment (say,e.g. only OpenBox) on
your workstation, then spawn X2GoClient directly on the
workstation/OpenBox session, treating the Workstation as X2GoServer and
X2GoThinClient in one box.

Start up a MATE session inside that X2GoClient, connecting to localhost,
then, when you want to connect remotely, simply force-suspend that
session and reattach to it.  This will give you native X2Go speed,
rather than the more VNC-like session shadowing.
