I can't speak for the developers but I think they are discontinuing
support for the gtk client for the single reason that they don't have
time to support it and the cross platform Qt client.

I've only just begun to look at the code so I really can't say but,
something is ringing a bell in my mind that this is actually a
misleading error and really reflects a failed login.  I'm not sure about
that though so I might be leading you astray.  I do recall we've seen
that error and it was not a matter of file system permissions.  Sorry I
can't be of more help - John
